WEAKNESSES
  • Empty Stomach: The Amphibow is a living thing, and its exertions use up metabolic energy. It must be fed, ideally regularly, or experience starvation.
  • Still A Bow: For all its virtues, the Amphibow is still limited by the nature of its weapon type. It can only launch one projectile at one time, at a rate of fire roughly commensurate to the user's skill and the current draw weight of the weapon.
  • Tuckered Out: Under heavy use, the Amphibow can begin to tire, weakening its launch strength, ability to generate arrows, and general effectiveness.
DESCRIPTION

A one-of-a-kind alteration of the Amphistaff, this strange creature-weapon is currently held by Neryn Ka.

Despite his general lack of good sense, even Neryn can recognize the value of a discreet kill from time to time. As such, the Amphibow was commissioned for this exact purpose.

This curious little biomachine is, on its surface, simple enough. Bows are among the oldest tools in the galaxy, with a storied history more ancient than many entire civilizations. The Amphibow technically functions no differently: it weaponizes tension in its limbs to launch a projectile at distant targets.

Of course, being grown for purpose, it possesses a number of significant changes over a crafted weapon.

Overall, the Amphibow possesses a wormlike body of the sort sometimes seen in various arthropod predators the galaxy over. It is composed of several interlocking armored segments, allowing it superb control of every centimeter of its musculature. This confers several benefits, such as precise control of limb curvature, adjustable stiffness (or "draw weight") along the bow, and excellent structural resilience.

As mentioned, the Amphibow can alter its own draw weight by changing the tension and rigidity of its body, taking only a few instants to do so. Likewise, the muscular limbs are capable of storing enormous mechanical tension, snapping themselves forward under their own force at the instant of an arrow launch. This significantly increases the projectile's velocity, range, and impact well beyond what would normally be mechanically possible.

Interestingly, the Amphibow is capable of decreasing this bodily tension to near nothing, allowing it to be curled up into an easily-carryable folding configuration. In this state, the organism's spines lock it together in a coiled state, and it can be looped around one's neck, over one's shoulder, around one's waist, or tucked into a bag or box, keeping the hands free for other tasks as needed.

The "bowstring" is not an external cord, but a living tendon filament grown from specialized glands at the limb tips. This growth is composed of extremely dense collagen fibers, providing a stable, durable launching platform. Small subglands along the string's surface secrete a mild adhesive, securing the arrow to the string, and aiding the user in maintaining a firm grip. Like the bow's "limbs", this cord can tense or relax itself as needed, adding yet further potential force to a launch.

The central grip between the two limbs is effectively the source of the weapon's "brain". This senses chemical markers from its user, ensuring that only Neryn may wield the weapon with any real efficacy. If gripped by an unfamiliar person, the organism often reacts violently, clamping its spined body around the offending hand with bone-snapping force.

In the hands of its intended user, however, this grip is effectively a way to non-verbally communicate with the Amphibow. Pressing certain nodules or ridges signal the weapon to grow specific styles or functions of arrows, to collapse or unfurl, or other simple commands. Should quiet not be a concern, the grip also possesses a simple ear structure, allowing it to receive verbal commands.

The arrows themselves are no less interesting than the primary bow bioform. These projectiles are grown from a pair of gland-pouches in the Amphibow's limbs, then moved up towards the grip by a series of muscular contractions. Thus, the Amphibow effectively carries its own quiver at all times. Between both pouches, the fully-fed, fully-loaded bow can carry approximately 32 arrows. When not in immediate use, these pouches contract, maintaining an overall slim and deadly profile.

As they are themselves living organisms (however simple), the arrows can be grown from the Amphibow in a variety of specialized configurations and styles (to be subbed at a later time).

A "normal" arrow can be generated in approximately one standard minute, while specialized variants can take even longer. Thus, the user would be wise to anticipate future tactical needs, rather than attempt to create a specialized solution on the spot.

These strange living projectiles appear to be formed of the same chitin or bone structure as the Amphibow itself, particularly around the tips. These emerge from their pouch already sharpened to a lethal edge, and aided by the sheer might of their launching process, are quite capable of piercing most light armors.

The arrows' "fletchings" are strange, translucent membranes, stabilizing the projectile in flight as such structures would do in a normal arrow. More interestingly, however, these membranes are capable of moving, allowing the arrows a slight course-altering capability. This trick is quite capable of turning a near-miss into a hit, or turning a small flesh wound into something far more serious. The exact degree of course-correction can vary by distance, but in within most practical combat ranges, the arrows can alter their point of impact a dozen or so centimeters in any direction.

The structure of the weapon itself is capable of healing naturally, albeit over a fairly prolonged period. For example, a snapped string-tendon will eventually grow back, as will sections of armor chipped or broken by battle damage. As such, the weapon never requires much in the way of maintenance (aside from regular meals).

These delightful features, of course, do come with the challenges inherent in organic life. The Amphibow is a living thing, and thus, it must fuel its bodily exertions somehow. A small, many-tendrilled mouth on the rear of the bow's grip must be fed from time to time. Typically, the amount of food required scales roughly to the extent of the Amphibow's recent exertions. If it should begin to starve, the bow will coil itself into its resting configuration to conserve energy, effectively entering a sort of metabolic hibernation. Needless to say, this renders the bow unuseable until it is properly fed. Thankfully, the Amphibow is not an especially picky eater. It prefers meat, but any high-energy food will do in a pinch.

Likewise, the bow isn't a font of limitless energy. Even if properly fed, extreme or prolonged exertion can tire the organism out. It might struggle to maintain adequate tension in its limbs (thus weakening the power of its shots).

In the case of either exhaustion or starvation, the bow might lack the energy needed to generate arrows at all, potentially rendering the user helpless unless they can recover spent shots.

Hello I will be handling this sorry for the delay

A bow, even a biomechanical one that contributes its own muscular force to the launch, is a projectile weapon limited by physical draw weight and aerodynamics. The extreme damage rating suggests the arrows impact with the force of a disruptor rifle or something more powerful. And extreme range rating suggests striking targets at distances potentially kilometers away. When paired with arrows that possess trajectory-correcting fletchings capable of turning near-misses into hits, the weapon effectively becomes a guaranteed kill at any visible distance. Please clarify the distance thaat would be maximum effectiveness.

The ability to generate various specialized arrow types is there but left entirely undefined. This is vague and can fall into the Green Arrow/Hawkeye quiver with a trick arrow for any occasion at the perfect moment. So two questions.
How long does it take to grow replacement arrows under normal conditions?
Does generating the special arrows starve the bow faster or require significantly more feeding?

The trajectory-correcting fletchings feature requires a little more clarification. The current text states that the arrows are capable of moving, allowing the arrows a slight course-altering capability. This language is vague regarding the level of correction. Please clarify if the adjustment is limited to a few degrees or it the implication that the arrows can execute ninety-degree turns or round corners?

It was my understanding that weapon stats were in relation to a "normal" weapon of its type.

The Factory template directly says as much under the Damage section, "How powerful the weapon is, in relation to its class." Nowhere did I suggest that the sub here has multi-kilometer range, or disruptor-like hitting power. It is intended to have extreme range and hitting power by the standards of a bow. If you'd like me to list an exact effective range in meters, I've added one under the Range section as requested.

As for the special arrows, I did stipulate under the Strengths section that they do indeed require more energy from the Amphibow to create.

though these consume more metabolic energy to generate.

I have added a short paragraph detailing how long normal arrows take to generate, and that specialized variants can take far longer.

I've clarified this a bit too, making it clear that the arrows' course correction is limited to within a dozen centimeters. Please let me know if I need to make any other changes.
