All along the Mara... (Wardens/Open)

Loction: The Mara Corridor

[member="Onna Sunrider"] [member="Audren Sykes"] [member="Ryn'Dhal"] [member="Alys Raxis"]

The Mara. It was a vast stretch that connected most of the rim. It was a place where much was ado these days. Jack had a particular interest today in monitoring the corridor for Pirates. The lawlessness of the Corridor lent easy targets up for their gobbling, and he was tired of hearing his smuggler buddies complain about the matter. In a matter of three months galactic standard, there had been over one hundred fifty reported raids on convoys, some containing civilians.

Why he even gave a crap he wasn't entirely sure. His mother had been a Warden once, dedicated to patrolling the spacelanes as well as the entire galaxy, smiting evil where it sprouted. He supposed he wasn't much different. A bit of a vagabond and a wildcard, he still had his moments when he gave a Kark.

Innocent civilians being sold into slavery was another peeve of his. And three guesses where most of them were being picked up.

"Dak revert us here and set the Grav mines."

The Kessels Pride reverted from hyperspace, making a flash as she came into the corridors main sub-light lanes. There was nothing out here. A few derelict ships floated with their hulls burned out. Lot's of debris. His contacts had been right, this was a place where they set the most raids.

"Roger."

Dak flipped a few switches and small cylindrical sphere floated into the night. They latched onto the derelict, activating. Gravity began to pulse, drawing them in a bit closer than he liked.

"Whoa!" He Juked right, banking the Pride and putting her to full burn. All mines were deployed.

Then he killed her, dead stop. his thumbs flipped off the power, all the way down to the life support. They appeared now to be another completely derelict vessel, almost impervious to scanners. In the void Dak and Jack waited, breath fogging the inside of their EVA suits HUD.

The young Jedi tensed in his seat when the first ship arrived, dropping from hyperspace. It didn't appear as though it were a pirate vessel, or a damaged vessel caught for ambush. No, this one was here for an ambush, as it was sitting much like his own. Powered down to nothing more than life support. looking like another piece of so much wreckage. Though, this one did not go the extra mile Ryn'Dhal did. Artfully placed blaster-scorch marks along the hull of his ship aided in the look of dereliction. Broken panels of durasteel were also fastened strategically to improve the 'damaged' appearance. Excellent camouflage, if the felinoid said so himself.

Watching the other ship, seeing the mines set into place, the golden eyes narrowed. He would watch. He would wait. And he would lend aid, if it seemed the other ships crew was here for noble purposes. But, had he been another villain, then he and Emvee would see to it that to the best of their power the other ship joined the debris here, lost to the void.

He didn't dare reach out with the Force, to try to ascertain the other crews intentions. His own presence was minimized, suppressed. He wanted to make sure it was nearly impossible, let alone improbable, for another to note his presence in the debris field. If there was another Force Sensitive aboard the other ship, his reaching would be easily detected, so instead of advertising his presence, he waited. All would be revealed in due time....

The Ambrian Adventurer raced through hyperspace, streaks and clouds of light rushing past the cockpit. Onna stared glumly out the window. They were beautiful, yes. But they were the same for light-years and weeks of real time. The same blue streaks. The same swirl. It had gotten boring, if she would be honest. Bounty hunting was not near as exciting as she had anticipated. She stood and walked out of the seat, pacing her way into the hold for the hundredth time.

There was only so much time she could spend walking around like this. She leaned against the cool bulkhead, thinking, and then grabbed her sword. Might as well practice with it. She had found an instructional datacron on Ambria and after a great deal of tinkering and adjusting, had gotten it working again. She activated it and took up the beginning stance before working through the motions. A velocity, the datacron called it, which sounded very strange, but no matter.

High block, low block, lunge, counter strike. It was difficult, since she only had half a sword, while the velocity wanted a double bladed one, she had figured out how to adapt and compromise with them. Something dinged in the cockpit, and she lowered the sword to listen. It certainly wasn't urgent, but the sound of it. She picked up the sword again and resumed her training, going slowly and deliberately to adjust to the weight.

The dinging continued and Onna frowned, sheathing the sword along her waist and hurrying to the cockpit. What was going on?

Dak and Jack sat in silence. He didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, so dak broke the silence.

"So why are we here again?"

Jack glanced over and smirked, pointing to the mines. He hate Pirates, they'd tried to rob him several times before. They'd been hitting fellow smugglers shipments, even killing a few. Jack had a gift, a knack for trouble. He was able to see what other couldn't and he was slowly becoming more aware of his ability to feel things.

Was it the force they all talked about? He couldn't tell.

"See that kid. Any second now I reckon we're gonna grab something or someone. Then going off that we will track pirate locations across the Mara. If I can backtrack to a source, I'm confident I can get Zorlac and the Hutts to give me some creds to clear em out. Otherwise we will have to ask some Vode to come along."

Mandalorians as a generality were none to fond of thieves, but Jack liked to keep Clan business and personal business separate.

"So now what."

"Just watch and wait."

And they did......

Except several minutes later there was flash as a CR-90 dropped out of hyperspace, reverting quickly and violently. Pieces of her hull came off, slamming into the derelict, drawn by the mines. Jack fired up the minimal power, eyes opened wide. She was leaking fuel and bodies, and scorch marks were clearly visible across her hull.

"What the-"

Jack was already tuning on the comms and firing up the Pride. He'd hoped to pull a pirate vessel , not a smashed one like this.

"Distress beacon is it a trap?"

Klaxons were wailing as the Kessels Pride went full power and Jack began flipping through systems turning them on in a hurry.

"Dunno kid but she's obviously badly injured. We gotta get over there and see what we can do to help. Spacers don’t ignore distress signals, even if it's pirate ploys."

Ryn had kicked his ship into gear, startled out of his reverie by a ship falling out of hyperspace in pieces. The vessel looked like hell, but what also caught the felinoid's attention was the other ship sprang into action as well. He'd glance to Emvee, who was already steering the Mask towards the distressed vessel, so he'd toggle the com, hailing the other ship. "Friend or foe? By the Force I pray you're here to help!"

The young Jedi couldn't afford to wait to see whether or not the other vessel was piloted by a soul of mercy, or a villain. Lives were likely being lost by the second aboard that vessel, and loss of life was something Ryn intended to mitigate to the best he could. He'd toggle some lights on as the freighter started a sweeping pass about the larger vessel, seeking major signs of damage. That, and possibly somewhere to latch onto to board to help evacuate passengers to save them the best he could.

Sadly, his attention was so focused on the damaged vessel, he was likely flying blind to any hostiles that could be approaching at this point. Hailing the damaged vessel, he'd seek some sort of response and request for aid. "Damaged vessel, this is Ryn'Dhal of the Mask, respond. Do you need aid, and what can I do to help!" He'd hoped to nab some pirates in the act, but it looks like that'd have to wait for another day....

Alys received a distress call coming from a starship in the Mara Corridor. Have no predetermined assignment and it being a Jedi's duty to help those in need, she quickly responded by attempting to contact the corvette in distress to hopefully open a communication line and find out exactly what had happened. Meanwhile she piloted her starfighter in it's direction. While she really couldn't rescue passengers or anything like that, perhaps she could help in some other way.

Arriving on the scene, she noticed multiple ships already in the area and then the corvette in distress, which appeared to be in critical condition having recently been attacked as blaster marks lined its hull, the ship raining debris. She watched the other ships to make sure they weren't the attackers before moving her starfighter in closer hoping to find a way to help the damaged ship.

Hyperspace was boring. In Audren's old ship, the one the One Sith had so inconsiderately blown up on Sullust, he'd had more space. An area to sleep in, a galley, a cargo hold, and a general area he could use for whatever. Despite being relatively similar in size, the newer vessel was much more cramped. As a result, he'd been torn between having a living suite or a much-improved hyperdrive installed in the modular bay. One would make the hyperspace trips that much quicker while the other would actually allow him to live onboard if necessary. In the end, he'd chosen the living suite. He could learn to occupy his time in the living suite, where as it would take him a lifetime to learn how to live in a cockpit and spacer's cabin.

The young Knight traveled most often between Silver Sanctum space and that of the Galactic Alliance. The Mara Corridor was his hyperlane of choice, as it ran approximately three quarters of the distance. Such made things much simpler, especially if he ran into an issue. Of course, it also ran through Hutt and Techno Union space as well as that unclaimed, and thus could be treacherous in its own way. He hadn't run into anything with the old vessel - a blessing, as it would have cracked like an eggshell. In recent months, report after report had surfaced of attacks along the Corridor, some involving civilians others not. Had the Sephi been in his old ship he might have worried, but this one was a much tougher nut to crack. Hence his apparent ease as the vessel navigated the swirling streaks of hyperspace.

There was only a flicker of of warning in the Force. Abruptly the heavy starfighter reverted to realspace, the sudden change in velocity overcoming even the inertial compensator and slamming Audren forward towards the viewport. Not having anticipated the interruption to his journey, he'd not buckled into the pilot's seat and it was only his brief warning that prevented some nasty bruises from being inflicted by transparisteel. Both palms slammed into the command console, stopping his forward motion and bouncing him back into the acceleration couch. For an instant he thought he had hit something, as the increasing brightness outside the viewport wasn't normal. The phototropic application caught up quickly though, shielding the light from what he now saw were the engines of a vessel much larger than his.

Instinct took over and the Jedi grabbed the command stick, forcing the nose of his fighter 'down' and away from the vessel in a rolling spiral. Collision alarms stopped blaring as he did, and he took a few seconds to glance up at the ship he'd almost rammed. In all honestly, he didn't know if ramming it would have made conditions much worse: parts were tumbling away from it, there were bodies that had been spaced, and there were an unbelievable amount of scorch marks decorating the paint. On top of that, the HUD showed that the vessel was broadcasting a distress beacon. There were other ships in the area too, two freighters and a fighter. None of the three were shooting at the moment, but it was no stretch of the imagination to suspect they had caused the damage on the corvette. They'd disabled it with the initial ambush and now were moving in to claim their prize.

Not on his watch.

A few switches were flipped, some buttons toggled, and the ship's combat systems came to life. Mandalorian-designed shields sprang into being in a protective field while mass drivers, laser cannons, ion cannons, and missile launchers lit up. Without a gunner he'd have to rely on the Force to help him divide his attention, as he expected the pirate fighter to split from the larger vessels so he couldn't concentrate his shields. Two seconds were spent buckling in before turning his attention to the targeting displays on the HUD. Missiles first, to soften up or strip their shields, then other weapons to follow. No doubt their own vessels would begin alerting them of impending targeting locks; hopefully his would be the faster reactions.

Despite the fact that they were pirates, he was still a Jedi. He couldn't simply attack them without warning them, without giving them an option to back off. But where were the darn comm controls again?

OOC: Comms will be activated in my next post and the whole thing can be straightened out from there. Thought it might be fun to throw some loops into this situation.

Then there were missiles. Alarms beeped as the lock ons showed across the dash. They were moving in quickly towards the limping vessel and Jack was wide-eyed behind the Helmet of his Naval Aliit'Gam. This was crazy, three other vessels flashed onto the scope.

"Dak comms and shields full power!"

The transition slowed the Kessels Pride just a bit and Jack brought her alongside the wounded vessels airlock, moving them into docking position. The initial pair of missiles streaked by, aimed towards somewhere else. Through his helmet he roared across the channels.

"This Captain Jack Raxis of the Kessels Pride reacting to a distress beacon. Cease fire, cease fire!"

"Docking tubes?"

"Quick!"

Dak flipped another set of switches, moving the docking tube out of the hull, as Jack was getting to his feet, scooping up his antique blaster Rifle and heading towards the airlock. Whatever this guy fired at them now, risked the ship. If he was a concerned helper, he'd stop. If he was a pirate?

Well they'd have to do some shrewd planning to help the passengers as well as preserve the Pride.

The beeping increased in intensity and Onna hurried to the bridging, hitting the message, listening as a distress signal blasted across the channels. She threw herself into the seat and strapped, preparing to cut the hyperdrive and reroute. Then she dropped out of hyperspace anyways and blanched as not one, but multiple ships appeared out of nowhere, all uncomfortable close to her path of travel. She forced the joystick down, sending her ship dodging beneath the standard disk as it cruised to a stop.

Onna let out a deep breath as the ship slowed to a halt and she looked at everything, trying to decipher the situation as the broadcast from [member="Jack Raxis"] reached her. She activated her own comm.

"Ambrian Adventurer, responding to distress signal. Do not target."

She guided the ship up to the opposite side of the corvette, searching for the docking ports. Where were they? Where were they? She scoured the hull, face going pale at the sights of all the destruction and damage. She hit the comms again.

"We know who did this?"

Alarms... Feth.... Not good, getting targeted.... Ryn never was a particularly gifted pilot. He'd scramble for his com controls, in the process pitching his ship just slightly, bringing the starboard bow of his vessel in clearer view of [member=Audren Sykes]. The icon, along with the Basic designation of the vessel, the Mask, would be rendered visible to Audren. It was a vessel that the Sephi would have witnessed frequently in the hangar on Voss. Finally thumbing the com, he'd broadcast open to all in short-range reception, "Non-hostile here! Rendering aid!"

He'd curse to himself, hoping the panic wasn't too evident in his voice. Getting spaced in the middle of nowhere for trying to be a 'good samaritan' was definitely not on his list of 'desired ways to get dead'. He'd turn his attention to the ship docking to the derelict vessel. Toggling his com again, "Rather than compounding your rescue attempt by being 'one too many hands', I'll position myself for sentry. Posting above!" He'd inform the other would-be aids to the cause, as he began firing his minor impulses, carefully re-positioning his vessel in an advantageous angle to keep an eye out for any potential threats. From here he could see some blast-scores along the surface, though with the way they burnt the hull, the ship was obviously struck from behind primarily. Reorienting accordingly to face towards the rear of the damaged vessel, he's make sure his limited weapons were primed, though safety still engaged, just in case the assailants decided to come to 'finish the kill'.

Ah, there it was. Audren activated the comm system so he could order the pirates to stand down or retreat. As he did so though, voices started coming through the speakers. Odd that they were talking to each other over open channels. Then his ears caught up with the rest of him and began interpreting what he was hearing. The voices overlapped, but all of them had something in common: panic.

"This Captain Jack Raxis of the Kessels Pride reacting to a distress beacon. Cease fire, cease fire!"

"Ambrian Adventurer, responding to distress signal. Do not target."

"Non-hostile here! Rendering aid!"

Whoops. So that was three of four unknown vessels claiming to be providing aid, one of which he knew by name. Thus despite the steady tones informing him that he had solid locks on the vessels, he held fire to perform visual checks. That was the Kessels Pride, Jack's vessel, already docking with the listing corvette. That big one there...wait, he recognized that symbol. That ship was on Voss a lot. Curious. That left two ships, one of whom had identified as the Ambrian Adventurer. Fortunately for the Adventurer, the pilot spoke up again, and was highlighted on the HUD. That vessel was cruising by the corvette slowly. All three ships were manually marked as friendly, with only the small fighter unidentified.

"Hathol, acknowledging the Adventurer, Pride, and third vessel. Unknown fighter, you have ten seconds to identify."

The Sephi released the targeting locks on the three supposed friendlies, focusing just on the small fighter. Given the size, he suspected that the starfighter could out-maneuver his own heavy fighter, but there was no way it would outgun him. He'd attempt the turreted ion cannons first, allowing the fighter to settle into the 'kill' position behind him and trying to disable it. If that didn't work he'd have to destroy the thing. Assuming it didn't identify as friendly, that was.

Alys watched as another vessel came out of hyperspace, threatening to blast them all to bits.

"This is Jedi Padawan Ayls Raxis responding to the distress beacon. Hold your fire." She responded to the incoming transmission.

She stood by, waiting for a response from the vessel. The last thing she needed was a fight in the midst of responding to a distress signal, but if that ship wanted a fight, a fight it would get.

The incoming fire had ceased and the airlock cycled open. Jack was moving at an increased speed, charging down the tubes with his Besk'ad held loosely in his right hand. As he moved his growing sense of danger was increasing. Something was not quite right here. The outer airlock of the damaged vessel whooshed open and he leapt through, clearing it in one motion.

There were bodies everywhere, laid in neat rows upon the floor. Medics were switching from body to body, trying to save those that could. As soon as he appeared two of them whirled drawing their blasters and barking at him.

"Halt!"

"Whoa easy, we're here to help. What the frak happened to your ship mate?"

"We were attacked by Pirates. Rear section is damaged and our engines are down. Atmosphere is zero in the engineering compartment. We were on route to the core but thanks to someone, we've been pulled directly out of hyperspace."

Jack grunted, realizing he may have made a mistake.

"How far behind are your pursuers?"

"Not too far we reckon," The Medic Growled.

"Where's your Captain?"

"Dead, I've assumed command."

Just then the sensors pinged as a new ship dropped out of hyperspace. Jacks ears lit up as Daks voice broke through the helmet and into his skull.

"We got a problem Skip."

"What kid?"

"Big ol' Pirate vessel just dropped out of- hold on two of them. One Action IV and a Marauder. Looks like the big ones headed to board."

Onna buuckled on her equipment as as the airlocks met and latched, protecting her against the vacuum of space. This was good enough so far, and she hurried to the hatch, slipping through into the other corvette, pausing at the sudden appearance of bodies and armed medics. The commlink on her wrist, patched to through her ship's computer dinged and she stared at it in horror. More ships dropping out of hyperspace, big ones with lots of guns and and one was preparing to board.

She looked around frantically, trying to figure out what to do. She couldn't escape through hyperspace. Nor could her ship stand up to these big ones when it came to a dogfight. Then when she realized what her thoughts were, her face went pale. She had been thinking about running away and letting these people die. How could she? The thought left a repugnant feeling in her gut and she pushed it away, trying to think about what needed done. Onna had caught the last bit of what was wrong with the ship.

Could she fix it? The vibration of the other ship began to rattle through the hull and she shook her head, tying her hair up behind her face to keep it out of the way. Perhaps, if she had enough time and the right materials. That was what she didn't know of right now, but she hurried over to the acting captain.

"Onna Sunrider," She looked behind her nervously as more things began to creak through the hull. Magnetic clamps, by the sound of it. "I might be able to patch up the engines and get them running to make an escape."

"This is Jedi Padawan Ayls Raxis responding to the distress beacon. Hold your fire."

"Acknowledged, Raxis."

Another Raxis? Bigger family than he'd thought.

And that was all four, accounted for. Still not an optimal situation, but it could be worse. Now the priority shifted to getting aid to the damaged corvette. Audren switched sensor focus from wide-field readings to closer in on the listing vessel, hoping to get a better idea of ways he could help. As the scanners grabbed more and more data, schematics started splashing up on a secondary screen. Two docking rings with airlocks, multiple other airlocks not designed for ship-to-ship transfer, and a single hangar. A single small hangar. Far too small for the Hathol to fit into, and his ship wasn't equipped with a docking ring station. Maybe if he used his tertiary airlock...but no, that wouldn't work either, as he had no way to initiate from the other side.

Another item to go on the list: hacker. Gunner, hacker, mechanic, navigator. Really, he needed a second person on this one-person ship. That was going to be fun to figure out.

In the time it had taken for Alys to identify herself and Audren to finish his scans, the Adventurer had moved to dock with the corvette in similar manner as the Pride. So that left only the hangar that he couldn't fit with or an airlock he couldn't force. Maybe the unknown Silver vessel could serve as a way station? In the middle of his ruminations, the sensor board started howling and switched focus. A cool feature he hadn't known about.

Two more ships inbound, neither of them friendly. The Force made that extremely clear, as did the pirate transponder IDs they broadcast. The bigger of the two was larger than the CR90 and was headed in to dock. Extraordinary reaction times, all things considered. Tractor beams activated and magnetic clamps took hold of the target, positioning it above one of the unused airlocks. The other ship held off a bit; it had the look of a freighter, something used more for transport than fighting. Probably the hauler taking captives and valuables back. While the larger vessel was the one doing the damage, the smaller one would be the more critical. Drive that off and the larger ship might just follow. But they needed the whole warning thing again.

"Pirate vessels, by order of the Silver Sanctum Coalition you are under arrest. Surrender peacefully or be destroyed."

No reply came, at least not in words. One of the turbolasers on the boarder swiveled and fired, the shot glancing off the Hathol's shields and doing significant damage to them. Not to mention knocking the smaller vessel off its line of flight. Fine, that was how they wanted it?

"Pride, Adventurer, boarders coming at you from the bottom rear airlock. Er...aft...ventral? I think. You get it."

The Sephi stabilized his flight and headed for the smaller ship that was hanging back, which is sensors now informed him was an Action IV transport flying under the name Cobalt Plunder. As he headed for the ship, he loosed a pair of missiles as well as a volley from the mass drivers. Hopefully he'd be able to chew through shields and armor with the combination, at the very least he'd get a good estimate of the sort of damage the weapons would do and could compensate on the next run if necessary.

Now was the test in truth for the other ships though. The Pride - Jack and Dak - he knew and trusted, more or less. The ship from the Voss hangars was likely to be good as well, but the other two he didn't know. They claimed to be helping, but their responses here would show their true colors. Run and jump to hyperspace once outside the gravity field? Stay neutral? Attack one or the other group? Would the Adventurer's captain turn on them from the inside or help? Who knew.

OH FETH!!!

Suddenly two larger ships were on top of them. His meager arsenal stood no chance in denting those ships. He'd crank hard on the yoke, the ship rolling dramatically clear of the line of fire, a warning blast of turbolaser fire glancing off his aft shields mid-roll. The wash of the blast caused his freighter to careen dramatically. Had he been a better pilot, he could claim the end results of the whole ordeal as intentional. As it were though, he was a poor pilot, but the Force was on his side.... at least, the fact he didn't die led him to believe as such.

Somehow, through the roll and the flurry of activity, his vessel tumbled end over end, steadying in a lateral drift, re-positioned somehow 'lower' than the derelict vessel.... And drifting right on course into the hangar bay of the pirate vessel locking into boarding position below the damaged ship.

His ship, not an ideal fit for the hangar, was wedged, the sound of grinding metal snapping Ryn'Dhal back into the present. Pirates scrambled, confused and panicked, weapons drawn and leveled at the loading ramp of the Mask. He'd thumb his coms, signalling the friendly vessels. "So.... This is Knight Ryn'Dhal of the SSC.... I believe I have no choice but to board one of the pirate vessels.... Wish me luck!" He'd say, a nervous laugh escaping his lips.

As he approached his loading hatch, he'd pull that helmet into place, his iconic mask affixed in position. His HUD lit up, and he'd glance back at Emvee. "Be careful little buddy. We need to get up to the other vessel.... And sabotage this one the best we can on the way. Perhaps one of our new friends can help get us the feth out of here...." to which the little Astromech warbled boldly. "I knew you'd say something like that...."

The masked felinoid couldn't refrain from grinning, as he took his twin sabers in hands. "Well, far be it from me to be an ungracious guest. Let us meet our hosts...." He'd mutter, his sabers igniting. "Hit it."

((Srry about the late response, Ill try to keep better track of this))

Alys watched as a pair of enemy vessels sprang for hyperspace seemingly intent on finishing what they had started and destorying the corvette. Not messing around she piloted her starfighter forward, lauching a volley of lasers at the nearest transport as she approached, then quickly sped away from it.

She watched as the shots had no effect against their shields. She would need to come up with a better strategy if she was to have any hope of helping in the assault on the pirates. She circled the pirate ship at a relatively safe distance to get a better view of it and hopefully find a weak spot while avoiding their blasterfire.
