Discussion AI Disclaimers

I saw some writing recently that was very clearly AI written, and this idea randomly popped into my head. As part of my studies we had to disclose where and when we used AI as part of technical texts and seminars, which got me thinking.

What are your thoughts about disclosing when AI was used in the creation of a post or piece of writing? There's been two discussions about AI on Chaos recently and a lot of folks have voiced being for, against, or indifferent to AI. Would it change your opinion of the content? Would it make no difference? Why?

I'm not asking for or encouraging policy to force people to do it to be clear (and I believe Tefka wouldn't support it, wisely). It's an idea I haven't seen floated around yet, so I wanted to get a feel for where the culture stands on it.

Something like a brief line or along the lines of this image (source: this redditor) at the top/bottom of a post:

I'm for it. I don't find AI enjoyable to read so if I can get a disclaimer to avoid it if possible I would. Use it for your aesthetics, but don't subject me to reading it. I come here to enjoy a mutually shared hobby, so if I'm not getting that at the very least, why am I investing my time with someone who won't put up the effort.

I think it'd be neat and maybe encourage people to write.

Not gonna waste time arguing morals on the internet but AI posts are just bad quality, they're boring, and the only way to make them fun to read is to steadily edit and replace the AI's repetitive run on sentences and unimaginative, vague descriptors with your own human input. At that rate, why not just write it yourself...?

AI posting kills activity and stories.

Maybe we as a community should pay more attention to this?

I don't use AI in my writing and I strongly advise other people to do likewise - but I'm against this idea for one big reason:

The arguments and suspicions and call-outs over who is and isn't using AI or who is and isn't using a disclaimer is energy better spent arguing over other things, like whether curved lightsabers are canon and whether any true Mandalorian would use one.

Naw.

The arguments and suspicions and call-outs over who is and isn't using AI or who is and isn't using a disclaimer

Artists already now have to prove themselves as to not being AI because AI copies their style too much. This is a hobby for people's enjoyment, having to defend yourself from AI accusations would be pretty terrible for a place that's all about vibing and having fun. As is having your writing confidence being absolutely slaughtered by people saying "Clearly this is AI you need to pup up a disclaimer."

Not a fan of this to be frank.

While this is not to say that the suggestion is a bad idea in theory, in practice it will lead to unfounded accusations as others have mentioned. I do not want to have to post screenshot after screenshot of me writing the post line by line to prove that it wasn't an AI generating the text for me.

If you know someone is using AI, just avoid roleplaying with them.

The impression I took was just self-reporting. If people are going around on a witch hunt, that's a completely different problem, IMO. I think all that's being suggested is the community coming together to encourage transparency, not enforce it.

I am indeed asking about what we think about this sort of transparency. I hadn't seen the idea brought up anywhere yet, so figured I'd hit up a discussion on it. Not a suggestion of implementing it as a standard at all.

I use AI to proofread my posts when I am low on time. Does this make me a bad person?
People here are just discussing the quality of posts and the nature of AI in this space.
Personally, I think it depends on how you define proofreading. Are you using it to correct grammar or spelling? That's fine in my book, but if you're using it to reshape entire paragraphs? I'd prefer not to write with someone doing that.

It's the nature of the hobby, in the same way I wouldn't play Warhammer with someone who paid another person to list-build, assemble, and paint their army -- I don't want to write with someone doing the heavy lifting using AI.

I'm here to engage with a hobby, not to long-way-around chat with an AI-bot.

I think there is likely not a lot of overlap between people who use AI to edit/compose their posts and people who are willing to risk being ostracized or treated like second class citizens by self-identifying as such with every post.

I personally advise that we think of AI posting as bringing a store-bought dish to a cookout. Is it bad form to bring a box of hydrox to a potluck? Probably. But at least you brought something, and that is what is most important. Nobody is forcing me to eat store brand cookies. And if I can't tell the difference between your store-brand cookies and somebody else's homemade cookies, then that's an issue with me and my expectations. Good on you for finding high quality store brand cookies, I guess. We should all clutch our pearls a little less.

Big disagree. If someone brings Michelina's to my cookout I'm asking them to leave -- I'd rather them just have not brought anything.
