Name: Aegis Base, Ossus

Image Source: Here. Star Wars Legacy, Ossus Temple. Map designed by myself.

Classification: Protective Redoubt

Location: Ossus, defending the Jedi Temple there.

Affiliation: Silver Sanctum Coalition

Population: 7,500 approx. total garrison. Of this, about 2,500 are gunners, experts, garrison troops and support staff. The other 5,000 are permanent military forces. They comprise the 1st Ossus Division; divided into two brigades of infantry, a tank company, two walker companies, an artillery battery, an air defence company and a wing of fighters. One brigade of infantry is permanently deployed to defend strongpoints, whilst the other acts as a mobile reserve and is mostly motorised.

Defences:
  • 1 x Shield Generator – Built into the mountain overlooking the Temple, it provides protection against orbital and aerial attack for 10km in all directions. The ‘umbrella’ stops 50 metres above the ground.
  • 2 x Tempest Cannons – Located near the Shield Generator, these can fire through the shield’s grid and hit orbital or sub-orbital craft.
  • 4 x Keraunos Missile Turrets – Also located near the Shield Generator, these provide aerial cover if the shield should fall.
  • 12 x Ballista Weapon Emplacements – Scattered around the fortress in bunkers and hardpoints, these provide defence against heavy vehicles, walkers and large infantry formations.
  • 36 x Javelin Weapon Emplacements – Again these are scattered around the fortifications to provide additional firepower against infantry, light vehicles and aircraft should the shield go down.
  • 84 x MK3 Bolters – These are mounted in bunkers and entrenchments to bombard attacking infantry.
  • 6km of razorwire (outer ring), 3.5km (inner ring). These belts of wire are supplemented by mines and trenches to provide defending infantry with more security. The outer ring is surrounded by mines and obstacles as well.
  • 9 x Hydra Anti-Air Vehicles (Air defence company, split into sections of 3).
  • 9 x Typhoon Artillery Tanks (Artillery Company, grouped in central reserve).
  • 9 x Reaver Assault Tank plus 1 x Manticore Support Vehicle (Tank Company, reserve).
  • 2 x Magladroth Heavy and 7 Light Walkers (Walker Company, reserve).
  • 8 x Valora Walkers (Walker Company, individuals used for recon beyond the perimeter).
  • Many e-web, mortar, missile launchers.

Points of Interest: N/A, covered by Description below.

Description:
Aegis Base is built around the mountain overlooking the Ossus Jedi Temple and primarily protects said temple from attack.
The primary and most important component of this redoubt is the shield generator. This deflector shield can protect against any orbital or aerial bombardment and is the keystone of all the defences. As the terrain is so rugged, the shield generator cannot protect all the way to the ground. Rather, it forms an umbrella, with the shield stopping about fifty metres above the ground. This allows ground units to easily pass through, but prevents orbital or aerial attacks from being effective at all. In theory a skilled and/or suicidal pilot could hug the ground and fly through the gap, but with the amount of AA weapons combined with a lack of space to manoeuvre this would be very unwise.
The shield is powered by a reactor dug into the bedrock of the mountain and guarded by the best troops. If the shield falls, the Fortress lays open.

Also atop the high plateau are the significant communicators, sensor and command equipment of the garrison. This area is also bolstered by one of the Ballista Emplacements, the Keraunos AA turrets and of course the Tempest Cannons.
The Tempest Cannons are the fortress’ main offensive weapon. Linked to the shield, they can fire through it by deactivating a small area of the shield for the fraction of time required. These cannons have a range well into orbit.

Inside the mountain at a lower level are the barracks, storage and armoury of the fortress. These hollowed out chambers offer excellent protection from all but the heaviest orbital bombardments should the shield fall. They also provide some welcome relief from the sometimes inclement climate of Ossus.

The fortress itself is based on a curiously old-fashioned double trench system. Much of this is at least partially open to the air, meaning that if the shield were to fall, the fortress would be horribly vulnerable. However, for protecting the temple with the shield up it is extremely useful.

Surrounding the outer ring is a wide area of cleared ground. Here the jungle has been cleared to provide firebreaks up to 500 metres wide in most places. Closer to the first line mines and defences have been emplaced. These will (in theory) slow down any attacker, channelling them towards the two roads. Here the roads pass through the defences, but naturally are heavily protected.

To the south there is a rather curious situation. There, a stream had once flowed into a lake near the Temple, but now prevented from doing so it has formed a moat of sorts in the south-east quadrant. This area is impassable to vehicles and difficult for infantry. A causeway takes the road into the southern end of the base.
Inside the circuit of the second line is the marshy valley where the steam once flowed. This area is still difficult terrain except where a road spans it.

Both lines have extensive trenches, bunkers and emplacements long their length. In the eleven key locations (the twelfth being on the plateau) there is a Ballista and Javelin emplacement along with more standard support weapons.

Although very strong facing enemy attacks, the position is not perfect. Part of the problem is that the location was enforced by the Jedi Temple. The lynchpin of the whole redoubt is the shield. If that shield falls the rest is suddenly vulnerable. However, reaching and attacking the mountain fastness is almost impossible as aircraft cannot reach it and the height makes climbing unattractive, especially under fire.

History: Once a home of the Jedi Order, Ossus is now the frontier of the Coalition. To defend this cultural and strategic point a fortification was required. As this location was so important, Firemane and the Coalition invested heavily in its defence.
There were some in the Jedi Order who objected to the overly militant defences, but in a galaxy at war it was vital to give this key area the strongest possible chance.

During the somewhat odd ‘handover’ of the planet from the Republic to the Coalition, Valiens Nantaris and the other Coalition staff saw that the Temple and surrounds were poorly defended and badly placed to resist attack. Therefore they decided to place the Temple at the centre of a ring of defences.

Using experience derived from Kaeshana, Arkas and Tygara, Firemane designed a plan which would allow the Temple maximum protection. Whilst it was hoped they would never be needed, the defences serve as an important redoubt for Ossus in general but the Jedi Temple in particular.

Intent: To create a strong defensive fortification for the Jedi Temple on Ossus. This base may serve as the setting for skirmishes or invasions in the future, so making sure everything is noted is a wise move. This redoubt can hopefully provide a good setting for future RPs, with enough strengths and weaknesses to make things interesting.
The Ossus Jedi Temple is not well described and the surrounds are not well pictured in any Legends Canon. Thus, from a description of a mountain on one side and a valley on the other, this writer has extrapolated as necessary.
