Seren smiled to herself as she watched him succumb to the exhaustion he had fought so stubbornly to hide. One moment, he had been following the holodrama with determined concentration, the next, his breathing had deepened and steadied, his hand finding hers almost unconsciously as sleep finally claimed him. She remained exactly where she was for several quiet minutes, allowing him the peace he had denied himself for far too long. The flickering light of the holoprojector played silently across his face while the hearth continued its gentle crackling nearby. Carefully, so as not to wake him, she reached for a thick blanket folded over the back of the couch and draped it over him, tucking it lightly around his shoulders. Her fingers lingered briefly against his hair before she leaned down to press a soft kiss against his forehead.
"Sleep well," she whispered.
"You've earned it."
The days that followed settled into a rhythm neither of them had realized they needed. There were no urgent summons, no battles demanding immediate departure, and no impossible decisions waiting beyond the cave entrance. Instead, there was simply time. Varin slept as long as his body required, sometimes through an entire morning before finally waking with an appetite that Seren was quietly delighted to see returning. Meals became unhurried affairs, prepared from their small stores and the produce from the garden, shared beside the hearth or just outside the cave where the breeze carried the scent of salt through the mountain.
When he had the strength for it, they wandered together. Some mornings were spent tending the garden, checking each plant, pulling weeds, and quietly celebrating new growth that had appeared almost unnoticed. On other afternoons, they explored more of the cavern system itself, following passages neither had yet investigated, discovering chambers filled with glittering crystal veins, underground streams, and strange formations carved by centuries of flowing water. They talked as they walked, sometimes for hours, and sometimes not at all. The silence between them had long since become every bit as comfortable as conversation.
By the end of the week, the changes in him were impossible to miss. The exhaustion that had weighed upon his shoulders had eased, replaced by steadier footing and brighter eyes. Even his laughter came more readily now, no longer carrying the strain of someone forcing himself onward through sheer determination. It was not that every wound had vanished, nor that every burden had disappeared, but for the first time in a long while, he looked rested. Truly rested.
On the seventh morning, Seren greeted him with an expression that carried just enough mystery to betray she had been planning something.
"Come with me," she said simply, extending a hand toward him. Rather than leading him toward the garden or the familiar paths they had already explored, she guided him deeper into the mountain, through a narrow passage where the stone gradually gave way to polished walls worn smooth by ancient water. The air grew cooler, carrying with it the unmistakable sound of gently flowing water that echoed farther ahead.
The passage finally opened into a hidden cavern unlike any they had yet seen. Sunlight filtered through natural openings high above, scattering brilliant shafts of light across a perfectly clear spring that rested at the chamber's center. The water shimmered with shades of turquoise and pale emerald, so transparent that every smooth stone along the bottom could be seen with perfect clarity. Moss and ferns flourished along the edges, nourished by the constant mist rising from a small waterfall that spilled quietly into the pool before disappearing again beneath the rock. It felt untouched, ancient, almost sacred in its stillness.
Seren watched his reaction for a moment before her attention returned to the spring itself. A quiet smile spread across her face, one of quiet satisfaction rather than pride.
"I found it while you were sleeping one afternoon," she admitted softly.
"I thought it was too beautiful to keep to myself." Her amber eyes met his once more.
"Welcome to my newest discovery."
