Out over the oceans of Mon Calamari on an old platform, Caltin stood out with his two Padawans. This was not a mission like the one to Ilum, where multiple Padawans traveled with them, it was just the three of them, and that is what Caltin wanted. They would train in the field as needed, just like he wanted, but learning needed to have a supportive environment, and what better place to do so than here.

The weather was beautiful, it was not too bright, so Desbre should be okay, but it was not overcast. The sun was on its descent so that was much the cause, the weather was perfect and the temperature was great for the exercise that they were going to learn and experience today. Hopefully, this would be a lot of fun. It would give him more inspiration to go further. No need to keep things formal all the time, right?

The massive Jedi Master had to call in several favors to get this platform to himself, but it was all worth it, and the government and travel industry still owed him for defending one of their launchpads from Sith recently. No, the Jedi Master was not collecting, or looking for favors, but every now and then, those willing made for an easy exchange.

Man, it’s too bad it’s about to rain.

He said, sipping his bottle of Elba Water. Was he blind? Crazy? There wasn’t a cloud in the sky!
...YOU JUST HAVE TO REACH FOR IT.

The trip to Mon Cal space had been quiet, with Des meditating as she worked on the steps to construct her new saber. Or she spent time digitally painting, instead of focusing so hard on intensive physical training. When she trained, she practiced her ability to move objects, Sensing, Seeing, and making little Force Light sparkles, flashes, and sculptures.

The oceanic world of Mon Cal was a wholly new experience. She’d never imagined so much water. Arkania was a frozen ball, and a desert. Deneba was a desert world. Jedha, much the same. Circumtore had water features and forestation. Tol Amn had been a veritable swamp, with tons of trees and vegetation. Even that had been eye-opening.

But this seemed to be a endless ocean, with a flat horizon. It was open in a way that almost made her feel like she stood atop a mountain. The humidity in the air pressed close. Cool air flowed past her enough that she didn’t feel stifled as it tugged at her white hair. She’d gotten used to her new surroundings more quickly. Travel over the last few years had seen to how rapidly she could adjust to unknown places and spaces.

The twilight hour was not too harsh, and she doubted she’d need her lenses even at noon. Still, it was nice, and for all intents and purposes, it was a perfect time of day. Then Caltin mentioned it was going to rain. Confusion crossed her pale features as she looked up at him, then around them while reaching out with the Force. It was beginning to stir, just the hint of a ripple. And there came his mild mirth. Oh, he was up to something. And then she remembered the story he told about Llabruf and the rescue of his people. The way Caltin put out the fire that threatened to consume their wroshyr tree. She remembered wanting to learn how he did that.

A small smile spread across her face then as she leaned on the railing to the platform. “Such a shame,” she echoed, glancing over at Milya.

As the Mon Calamari sky was beautiful, it slowly became thick with humidity. Breathing would not be labored for any of them, but there was a noticeable difference in the air and the temperature was not helping. Slowly the humidity increased and the moisture evaporated into the skies. Where once was blue was now white puffy clouds. Those clouds became larger and larger and began to gray, where they were up near the mesosphere, clouds were dropping almost into the troposphere. It was slowly getting worse and worse until…

CRACK-BOOM!

When-lightning-strikes-image1-hero.jpg

Lightning struck the ocean a couple of miles in front of them. The sound was still as deafening as the image was incredible. As the rain slowly began to come down, Caltin continued to sip his Elba Water unaffected. He just stood there as more and more rain began to come down. When the storm was just about to reach the level of “torrential”, everything cleared up. Sure it did not clear up in an instant, but within moments the skies were as blue as the blade of Caltin’s lightsaber.

Turning to both Desbre and Milya, still sipping his water, he gave a “WELP?” look and tilted his head.

That was eventful. Want to learn how to do it?
... YET THE DAWN ALWAYS COMES.

Caltin was an unorthodox master, that was something that Milya had to learn quickly and she had adapted. There was no guidebook on teaching, no right or wrong way as best she could tell though some might argue against that opinion, one thing she had come to learn is Caltin believed in a practical application of the force.

As she stood on the platform near Desbre Gensan Desbre Gensan and Caltin Vanagor Caltin Vanagor staring out at the waters of Mon Calamari she cocked an eyebrow when he made the comment that it was about to rain. The young Echani slid a sideways glance to Desbre to see if she knew what he was up to. It was fleeting but she saw the mirth in her expression and that told Milya all she needed to know, he was indeed up to something.

Silver eyes watched with focused intent as the clouds began to form and darken, she could feel the change in the atmosphere as the storm began to take shape as the first peals of thunder echoed from the distance heralding the surge of electricity that arced from the sky into the water below. Her eyes fell to the waters edge in front of them, even as distant as it was; she wondered just how safe this platform was with such a massive charge hitting the water. Though if Caltin thought it was unsafe, he wouldn’t dare try it, at least that is what she told herself.

As the first drops of rain fell upon them she let out a soft chuckle in amusement, the rain itself didn’t seem to bother her, even when it fell in earnest before ceasing all together. Milya wiped a few wet strands of hair from her vision and looked to Caltin again. “What was that, a force storm?”

Des watched the skies. Like both of them, she saw fine through the "visible light" spectrum and all the way down through the infrared spectrum at the same time. She could literally watch the exchange of heat overhead and see how the various flows and drafts formed and altered the thermal mass of the clouds. Arkania's weather was a little different and it was fascinating to watch both as someone admiring the weather and even from a scientific standpoint. But moreover, she stretched out with her feelings, with the Force. She didn't interfere but sampled and mapped. At first, she sent out tendrils of energy that touched and flexed, mapped, and warped. But realizing that wasn't so efficient, they broke into a cloud of sorts, particles, that swept up into the storm and moved with it allowing her to not only see it with her eyes. But so too, did she see it in her mind, feeling it in three dimensions, like a hologram she could examine from any angle and even inside it.

She could feel the electrostatic forces building. That was a consequence of physics more than anything. But now the weather took on a whole new fascination for her. She'd spent so much time cooped up in a ship, or so busy training physically. Or just in places where the weather wasn't like this, that feeling those forces in motion, playing off one another... not just experiencing it through her body but with the Force left her mind spinning with possibility, and with a whole new appreciation for nature, physics, the universe, and the Force. It was awe-inspiring, and in some ways humbling.

Feeling the energy swirling and building, Des was not surprised when the first blast of lightning connected. Mentally she began counting the seconds, one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand.... When she got to ten, that was when the peel of thunder rolled over them. It was louder than she expected, thanks to the cool air and the way sound propagates over water. Her heart rate picked up, but not so much from fear but a small surge of adrenaline. In these conditions, sound travels at three hundred and forty-three meters per second or one mile per every five seconds. Two miles out. The storm cell itself was roughly a mile across, based on that scale. It was a simple calculation, but it made her smile even as the rain began to pour down upon the trio.

As the skies began to clear, Des realized she was soaked and shivered briefly. Milya's question brought her head snapping around, sending a few strings of platinum white hair slinging strings of water droplets before they settled. "Mmm, I don't think so," she replied. "Not in the way you mean." She glanced back to Caltin for confirmation. "Though... I think they might be related? The speed and such of that storm was unnatural, the makeup of it didn't seem to be fueled directly by the Force?"

"As for learning how to do that," she mused, trailing off, watching the skies. Both of them would sense an amount of hesitation and trepedation. She went over what she knew of meteorology from her primary education. Surprisingly it had been fairly solid. Arkania's education system was among the best in the galaxy, even for second-rate offshoots like her. "That's a lot of mass and energy to move around," she murmured to herself as she began breaking down the model of storm systems and how they worked. She compared that with what she'd mapped from Caltin's storm, and then considdered how to replicate it and what would need to happen. What she would need to do.

In some ways, it was staggering. In others, she knew better than to let that limit her expectations, or beliefs of what was possible. She'd already done more through the Force than what normal science said was possible. She'd learned to move objects with nothing but her will, often times weighing in the range of tons. She'd learned how to shape and mold light waves and photons with that same will. To knit flesh back together. To predict nearly flawlessly what an enemy would do. To communicate over distance with no apparent means.

Playing with the weather was entirely possible. She'd heard stories. She'd heard at least one anecdote from Caltin, and while anecdotes weren't really evidence, she had never known him to be anything approaching a liar. But more over, he'd demonstrated that very same ability. While he was lightyears ahead of her and Milya, Des knew it was within their potential.

The trepidation and hesitation began to fall away, replaced by increasing concentration and determination, beginning to hone in like a laser starting to focus, or a razor become sharper and sharper. She continued to break down what she would have to do, at least if she wanted to operate froma physics standpoint. "I've never done anything this big," she admitted to Caltin. Recalling her Tapas training on Dantooine, she'd learned how to manipulate heat on a personal scale. But there wasn't really any difference between that and on a macro scale. Finishing her initial analysis she glanced at Caltin. "I have some ideas on how all that is done," she gestured to where the storm had been, "but I absolutely want to hear your take on it, and how you went about it it." As she finished an unconscious smile spread across her face.

Well...
Caltin quipped as he reared back and threw the water bottle as hard as he could out towards the sea. If this was a long time from now in a galaxy far far away some may see he threw a "touchdown", whatever that is wink. Anyway, as the bottle sailed through the air the big guy just stood, looking at his two Padawans, out of nowhere a huge gust of wind blew the receptacle back towards the platform and into Caltin's "last second" outstretched hand (he didn't even look that way). Blinking for another moment and opening the cap, he took another sip. This was to let them either marvel or ponder what he had just done a little more.
Not quite a Force Storm, closer to 'Levitation', really, at least that's my take. Think about it this way.
With his free hand, Caltin reached out through the Force and flowed it through and around the oxygen around them and began to manipulate the flow of it all. Slowly, for him, the oxygen began to meld into a breeze and then a gust. He verbally explained further as he went on. For him, this had become second nature, but it was something that he had learned how to explain in the same manner one would explain how to walk or reach for something, it was a pain in the butt.
The Force is really only limited to what your limitations are. If you think you can do something, if you think you can grab something, you should be able to do it. Now, this doesn't work for everything, I mean you can't really grab a Star Destroyer, but... Well anyway, you see how the wind is moving around in the same manner as my hand? I'm grabbing a hold of it and moving it around where I want, just as I would this bottle, or one of you... heh... if I wanted to go there.
Stopping, it was time to give them a chance.
Take your time. Reach out and see the air and grab it. You're not going to get this the first time, you might not even get it the second time, so don't worry. Just remember, clear your mind and 'talk' to it... all of the midi-chlorians out there.

Des had remained silent to give Milya a chance to respond or interject but when she seemed to hold back, Des gave a sigh. "Alright, I guess I'm up first," she said. Midichlorians. By the Corellian Hells, she hated that term. It was such a cheap description. Regarding Caltin, her brows lowered, knitting together. There was more than one way to build a storm.

But if she did it that way, it would take a while to form. And then it would stay for days, as it was creating an entire weather system. Not a small storm cell that would come and go in minutes.

For the moment, Des simply did what she always did when learning a new ability. She reached for the Force and let it fill her up, then focused on what she was being shown. She felt it out, plumbing through its depths, mapping and analyzing. But just as much she felt it out, with sensation and even emotional states. If she could replicate those, then she could replicate the ability. So much of using the Force was guided not just by the intellect but will and intent, as well as physical feelings and sensations. Combining all of it into one cohesive picture often gained the best results, until it became as natural as breathing.

Very quickly she picked up on the air currents around Caltin, and the movement of the Force around him and the push-pull created in the process, but it was so ephemeral and fleeting.

For a time, Des simply stood there, or so it seemed.

Slowly she closed her eyes and settled onto her heels before leaning forward just a few degrees. Her arms rested at her sides but away from them a bit, trailing just slightly behind. Her head tipped up as though looking around thirty degrees over the horizon. Standing like that the wind seemed to blow about them, and for the time being Des stood, simply feeling them against her skin, and feeling the flow of heat.

Then the air came to her. She could feel its ebb and flow, its vibration, like tracing electricity in the wires in a conduit. It was more subtle and flowed in its own way loosely and easily. It moved humidity and water vapor with it.

She had the ingredients. Now to start building her storm.

Reaching out she began to try to move the air. Pushing against it caused small puffs of air, but what she put in quickly dissipated. Heat wasn't something she'd really worked with a lot outside of Tapas training. But the amount she would need to create a storm and to work with was... massive. And trying to move that much humidity over a large area. No. She'd have to stick with moving the air. Air carried the other components.

The pale padawan paused but was not defeated. Instead, she grew more determined.

Consider the nature of air.

There it was, that voice again. Whether it was the Force, or Karlize, or both, Des only smiled. Alright.

Humidity was only moisture or water vapor suspended in the air. Air was just a mix of matter in a gaseous state, excited to the point that it was no longer a liquid or a solid. It also moved from a state of high pressure to a state of low pressure until it achieved a relatively even mixture. But those were scientific ways of looking at it.

Air preferred to flow, to be free to move. It was always on the move, and it could only be pushed so much. In some ways, it behaved like water, but less dense. You couldn't force it, not in the open, not that much. It could only be... encouraged.

Taking a moment she created the image and feeling she wanted in her mind. Instead of trying to do it mechanically, this would require intuitive approaches. The Force was all around them, ever-present. Just like the air. And that could ebb and flow as she wished. Quickly she linked the Force and the concepts of air, and the air around them. This went into the building blocks of the image.

Standing there, eyes still closed, face toward the sky, Des lifted her arms slowly as energy gathered and coursed around them, starting as a slow rotation. At first, it wouldn't be felt, but then more and more would begin to swirl around her, until it became a breeze, then a wind. She let it build into a small dust devil swirling around her, lifting her hair almost straight overhead, a look of delight on her face. Breaking out into a peal of laughter, she let the air disperse, and settle.

"Okay, I know that's not the goal, but that was fun," she explained. "Okay, I think I'm ready to take a stab at this," Des declared, then glanced over at Milya. "Unless you wanna get the... aerokinesis," her voice pitched up in a question at the word, "part of this down first?"

Smiling almost like a proud papa, Caltin watched the Arkanian truly enjoy herself. It was good to see how she was actually having fun with this and though true, it may not be the goal but why not have some fun if you can, right? Stepping forward, he nodded his head in clear approval.

Good job, it's not something that you want to take lightly as this is a skill that, once you can manipulate it, is easy to overuse. Don't worry, I'm not saying you can fall to the Darkside by making one too many storms, but when I was taught this, I had to take the time to realize just how powerful the capabilities are. It is a great feeling, but it is also one that requires some focus the more you use it.

Looking between the two, he continued.

Anyway, the tricky part is the humidity, if you focus too much on the oxygen, it will blow up in your face, too much on the waterside and you have a waterfall... heh trust me on that part.

There was obviously a story there. Looking at Milya, he exclaimed.

Your turn.

The whole thing seemed silly to her if she was being honest, Milya had always found the force to be difficult to comprehend things were much simpler when one relied on their own strength and training. At least that was her inner thoughts as an Echani speaking, her master before Caltin Vanagor Caltin Vanagor had tried to stress the importance of the force but ultimately Milya tended more to the martial side of things which naturally meant armed or unarmed she was formidable but in this arena she was all together underwhelming.

She listened to Caltin as he explained, paying attention was not the problem however. With his explanation done Milya was about to interject but then Desbre Gensan Desbre Gensan stepped up to go first, fine by her anyways. She watched Des closely as she performed the feat rather admirably for the first time, all that served to do was cause Milya to be more annoyed at something she had not even attempted yet.

“Your turn”

Milya almost winced at the words but stepped forward next to Des, emulating her fellow padawan in closing her eyes and waiting. The difference was Milya could use the force for certain but patience and taking things slowly was not her forte. She lifted a hand and could feel the wind slowly start to move a small smile started to form on her lips until she realized something was wrong, the gathering air suddenly became more like a small tempest and the more she tried to hold it together the harder it was to contain it. Before she lost it completely she brought up her off hand and pushed the small cluster of air away hard with the force before the whole thing fell apart almost like a bomb going off, luckily not too close to them.

She muttered under her breath ‘feth’ as her cheeks reddened slightly, silver eyes looking downward. “Sorry, never really been good at these things.” Milya usually so confident was rather unusually quiet at this point.

Her silence spoke volumes.

Caltin wasn't stupid, he knew full well when someone thought that what he was teaching was a waste of time. There was a time when he would have simply told the Padawan to leave the training area, but this was normally in a large training session, and she was his. That and Caltin was not the person that he was when he first took her on as his student. Patience was a skill that he was regaining, and it was taking a lot with the Chaos that the galaxy was under.

Really?

What? Anyway, once the Echani was finished, she apologized? When did he ever care about or expect perfection? Oh well, shaking her off as if Milya had nothing to be sorry for, which she didn't, Caltin patted Des on the shoulder as he took a few steps away from them.

I know that this doesn't seem like something more than a cheap parlor trick, but manipulating the weather has a lot of practical effects. You're able to bring rain to drought victims, you're able to put out fires, to assist more than you think. In combat, you can use storms to not only manipulate your opponent but create an opportunity for a tactical retreat.

Waving his hand in a circle, a small waterspout could be seen off in the distance in the direction that he was pointing. Caltin not even watching at this point, he was focused on making the point to the other two that even the smallest skills can yield the biggest results. There was more to being a Jedi as well than what was more well known in the way of skills.

Want to try again? Focus more on the wind? Controlling water, rather than creating an entire storm?
