Private A Hermit No Longer

IL0fjAd.png

With the all familiar thump of a ship exiting hyperspace, a small vessel entered Odessen's orbit. It lingered for a moment as the pilot stared blankly from the viewport.

I'll be gone for a bit. Two weeks, including travel time. Perhaps more. Try not to let the children overthrow the place while I'm away.

The pilot thought back on the announcement of his trip as he drew a breath and exhaled slowly. It had been a long time since he'd been this far afield. A long time. But he supposed he could not live in exile forever. As pleasant as his "retirement" might have been. He adjusted a few controls, and pushed the sublight thrusters forward, angling the ship to approach the planet's orbit more directly. As he flew, a channel was opened.

"Hailing Odessen ground control, this is vessel Tyrant of Hunger, requesting permission to land."

Silence filled the cockpit as the man waited for a response. He pulled the ship up just shy of the galactic standard designation of orbit, zeroing the thrusters and awaiting a response.

"Tyrant of Hunger, this is Odessen Control. We see no registration of your ship with any formal entity. Please transmit identifier."

The pilot reached across to a terminal beside his flight controls, and pressed a series of buttons to transmit said identifier. It was an old one. Technically defunct. Technically one he shouldn't be using by modern spaceflight standards.

But it was the one that got him what he needed. He'd arrived on Odessen to speak with one specific person. A person, he was quite sure, had no reason to expect him. But he couldn't imagine she would deny the request for an audience.

Not when she saw the name associated with the vessel.

"Lord Voph, clearance has been granted. Proceed to the designated landing area immediately."

The notification reached Taiia midway through the morning. One of the academy staff had scarcely finished announcing that an unidentified vessel had requested landing clearance before the attached registry appeared on the display before her. She stopped reading. For a moment she simply stared at the name. Voph.

How many years had it been since she heard that name? She thought of lessons with the Knights Obsidian, of an Obsidian Lord who met lost girl wandering the galaxy when she found her way to Naboo on a stolen ship. A smile found its way to her lips before she realized it was there. "So the old man finally gave up retirement." The words were spoken softly to no one in particular. She rose from her desk without another thought, whatever work remained could wait another hour. Some interruptions were worthwhile.

The landing platform was already beginning to clear as Taiia arrived, the late morning breeze carrying the chill of mountain air and the gentle spray of the nearby river running rapid from the recent melt. She stood near the edge of the marked approach, silver robes stirring gently around her boots as the approaching ship descended toward the duracrete below.

As the engines finally settled into silence and the boarding ramp began its slow descent, Taiia remained exactly where she was, her green eyes fixed upon the familiar silhouette she had not expected to see again quite so soon. The smile that greeted him was small, warm, and entirely genuine. "It's good to see you again, Voph. Welcome to Odessen"

As the ramp lowered, it was revealed that not one, but two figures were descending the ramp. The first was every bit the titan Taiia remembered. Sleek, black armor that was marred by the scars of battle, reinforced faulds that tattered with time and wear all the same. Not one, not two, but four blades held in place by electromagnetic clamps. The two smallest were new. Standard blades by conventional means, but Shoto style in the titan's grip. The third that rested opposite them was all too familiar. The man's iconic greatsaber was just as weathered and worn as the man standing before her. On his back, the fourth saber rested idle, a staff configuration.

The man offered a stiff half-bow as the second, smaller figured joined him. His armor was constructed much in the same style as the larger's, but it was...newer. Untested. Upon his hip rested only a single blade, curved in the style preferred by Makashi practitioners. The smaller figure bowed as well, his attention turning to the larger man as he reached up to remove his helmet.

The face revealed was adorned with the scars of battle and time, the second finally beginning to eclipse the first. And yet the man seemed no more infirm than Taiia remembered. His brow relaxed behind the ornate carved bone that rested upon his face where eyes should have been. It wasn't a smile. Far from it. But to those who knew the man that rarely smiled, it was close enough.

"Headmistress Mataan. It's been too long. I trust the years have been kinder to you than they have to me?"

Taiia remained where she was as the two figures descended the ramp, green eyes quietly taking them both in.

Time had left its mark upon Voph in ways it so rarely did upon others. Fresh scars crossed armor she already knew by memory, while the familiar greatsaber remained where she expected to find it. Three additional blades accompanied it now, each resting with the same deliberate practicality she had always associated with the man who carried them.

Her gaze lingered for only a moment before drifting to the younger warrior beside him. His armor shared the same styling as Voph's, though the plates had yet to earn the years etched into the older man's. A single curved saber rested comfortably at his hip, and the bow he offered was practiced. There was an ease between the two that was difficult to mistake. Whether it had been forged through years of training, blood, or something else entirely, Taiia could not yet say. Then Voph spoke.

"Headmistress Mataan."

The title had scarcely left his mouth before Taiia rolled her eyes, a gentle smile finding its way onto her lips. "Titles are for strangers and politicians." The words carried no reprimand, only the easy familiarity reserved for old friends. "You are neither, my friend." She inclined her head in return, the gesture offered to both men before she straightened once more. "Taiia will suffice." Her attention returned briefly to the younger man, the same warm smile still present. "I believe introductions are in order, but I would be a poor host if I left you outside. Come. We can talk inside."

Voph snorted softly at Taiia's correction. To many, a dismissive and possibly rude gesture. For Voph? Akin to a belting laugh. "First introductions are always a formal affair, little one. All the more necessary for one of this importance."

Nearly three decades since Voph had last been seen in the galaxy. And yet, he spoke as if it'd only been weeks. Though perhaps to a man as long lived as he, three decades was all but the same. Voph gestured for her to lead the way before falling in step beside her. "It is good to find you well, old friend. I'm to understand much has been occurring within the galaxy. I regret that duties have demanded my attention elsewhere. But all in due time."

As the trio stepped from direct sunlight, Voph gestured to the smaller individual, who had begun to remove his helmet only after direct contact with the sun had been broken. "As prime example that coming of age upon a planet unknown to the galaxy at large, it is no excuse to be a barbarian upon meeting what will become an important ally. And I refuse to permit him anything else. Meet Atrios. Atrios, Taiia Mataan. Headmistress of this Academy, and one of the finest allies one could ask for."

When the younger man first removed his helmet, his eyes immediately thinned in pain. He quickly schooled his features, suggesting that he knew the sensation was coming. Unlike his father, when he turned to face Taiia directly, two clouded, sightless eyes stared back at her. The young man was unmistakable in his heritage. Upon a time, he would not have looked unsimilar to the now older man beside him. And yet there was heritage of another visible in his features. The scant differences to his father could all to easily be identified in his mother. Atrios offered Taiia a short smile and another inclination of his head.

"Headmistress. I've heard many stories of your exploits. A pleasure to finally meet someone as yourself."

Voph nodded once, approvingly. "He's been instructed to make himself familiar with your facility. If there's someone you see fit to escort him, I'll not dissuade you. But do not feel the need to expend resources on his account. He's been instructed to mind himself. Any punishment he might incur from you will only be met with a request that you double it."

Ever the straight face, Voph did not offer the slightest hint that his words were meant in humor. Either a being knew him well enough, or they didn't. Voph turned his attention back to Taiia. "I have a sinking feeling there's much I'll need to be brought up to speed on?"

Taiia's brow lifted at the familiar address, though the faint smile that followed held far more affection than annoyance. "Three decades, and I am still little one." She gave a small shake of her head before turning to lead them beneath the shelter of the Academy's outer halls.

The change in Atrios was immediate once the sunlight no longer touched him. Taiia noticed the brief tightening around his eyes, though she did not comment on it, merely slowing her pace until he had settled before continuing further inside. Her gaze moved between the two of them as Voph offered the introduction. The resemblance was difficult to overlook now that the younger man had removed his helmet.

She returned Atrios's inclination of the head. "Atrios. Welcome to Odessen." A quiet warmth settled into her expression. "And Taiia will suffice. Voph has already spent enough formality for all three of us." Her eyes shifted briefly toward the elder Miraluka before returning to Atrios. "As for the stories, I would reserve judgement until you have had the opportunity to determine how greatly they have been embellished." The corner of her mouth lifted slightly. "Though I suspect I already know who was responsible for telling them."

She continued further into the Academy, the open courtyard beyond the hall alive with the distant sound of instruction. Students moved between the surrounding buildings in small groups, some carrying training weapons while others disappeared along the shaded paths leading deeper into the valley. At Voph's warning, Taiia's attention returned to him. "I am certain the Academy is capable of deciding what punishment he has earned without your assistance." Her expression remained perfectly composed for another moment.

Eventually they arrived at her office, situated within the upper levels of the Academy's central building. She opened the heavy wooden door and stepped aside to allow them both inside before following. The room was larger than one might have expected, though it lacked the grandeur usually afforded to someone bearing her title. Weathered stone walls were softened by tall shelves crowded with books, old journals and carefully ordered holocrons, while several maps and star charts had been pinned across the wall behind her desk. A wide window overlooked the valley beyond, offering an uninterrupted view of the rivers winding through the jungle below. Near the centre of the room, a low table had been arranged between several comfortable chairs, positioned close to a broad iron brazier that kept the damp mountain air from settling too deeply into the stone.

"Have a seat, both of you. I will put some tea on."

Taiia crossed to a small alcove beside the shelves, where a dark wooden cabinet held a collection of cups and several sealed tea containers. She filled the kettle from a ceramic pitcher before suspending it over the brazier, moving with the ease of someone who had performed the ritual often enough that little thought was required. Only once the water had begun to warm did she glance back toward Voph.

"The Confederacy's fall, while not the genesis of things, however it did spur many changes. Alliances fractured, governments rose to fill the spaces left behind, and nearly every one of them believed they had finally discovered the answer the others had overlooked." A faint smile touched her lips as she selected a dark blend from a container and measured it into the pot.

"The Jedi divided themselves among new orders and old philosophies. The Sith did much the same, though they were rather less troubled by the contradiction. Republics became empires, empires became republics, and more than a few simply changed their banners while continuing precisely as they had before. The Alliance is gone, and the core rests firmly within the hands of the Sith Covenant. While Naboo is now the heart of The High Republic, what some might consider the successor state to the Alliance."

The kettle began to murmur over the heat. Taiia lifted it carefully, pouring the water over the leaves before covering the pot and allowing them time to steep.

"For a time, the changes were political. Borders shifted, wars were fought, and new names were given to old ambitions. Then the galaxy itself decided to participate." Her expression grew more thoughtful as she rested one hand against the edge of the cabinet.

"The Planeshift displaced worlds and rendered much of what we understood about the galaxy unreliable. Hyperlanes collapsed or emerged where none had existed before. Star maps became obsolete almost overnight. Some systems found themselves beneath unfamiliar skies, while the Rishi Maze and other companion galaxies were drawn far closer to our own. Even now, some regions have not been properly charted and routes that cannot be trusted simply because they were safe a year ago."

Taiia carried the pot to the table and set it down between them, followed by three cups. The fragrance of the tea slowly filled the office as she poured, offering the first to Atrios before placing another in front of Voph. She settled into the remaining chair with her own cup cradled between both hands, her gaze drifting briefly toward the star charts spread across the far wall. Several had been marked through in dark ink, their old routes replaced by handwritten corrections and uncertain notations.

"The immediate panic has passed, but the consequences have not. Trade routes remain unsettled. Entire governments have expanded into regions they could scarcely reach before, while others have discovered that worlds once considered safely within their borders are no longer quite so near." She took a measured sip before lowering the cup once more.

"Odessen was spared the worst of it. We lost reliable contact with several neighbouring systems and spent months confirming that some of our students still had homes to return to, but the planet remained where it was. That was more than many received." Her eyes returned to Voph, quiet amusement gradually softening the seriousness of her expression.

"That is the abbreviated version. I have omitted several wars, two or three apparent ends of civilization, and enough Jedi disputes to consume the remainder of the evening. I sent my own children out to learn what they could about the planeshift. Information is sadly still very scarce; not many were keen to look into the origins of planeshift." Her fingers settled comfortably around the warmth of her cup. "Though I suspect the Planeshift may explain why your return has occurred now rather than at any other point during the last three decades." She allowed the thought to linger between them for a moment before raising the cup again.

"Ask your questions; I will answer what I can."

Voph and Atrios followed silently, one occasionally inclining his head towards the other, as if there was a silent conversation passing between them. As they reached the office, Voph and Atrios moved to the seats indicated and slowly sank into the seats. Atrios seemed somewhat at ease as he sat, but Voph sat as he always did. At the edge of his seat, ready to launch into action at a moment's notice.

The pair listened quietly as Taiia explained things, much of which the pair were able to guess themselves. Voph turned his head towards Atrios slightly, and nodded. Again, as if they were speaking in a manner that Taiia could not hear or understand. Voph turned back to Taiia, picking up the cup of tea and gently taking a sip of the offered beverage.

"A reasonable assumption, but an incorrect one."

Voph considered his words for a moment before offering further comment. "New Vylmira has been content to sit by and let the galaxy solve its own problems. You were there, you know the sentiment in the wake of the Confederacy's fall."

Voph fell silent once more, then turned to Atrios. "A moment."

The younger man stood, bowed to them both, and turned to depart the room immediately. Voph waited until the door sealed behind him, then he turned to Taiia. "Within a week of this... planeshift... I received a vision. It would seem that...previous assumptions made are...incorrect."

His head bowed for a moment, rubbing his hands together idly. "It would seem I have unfinished business in the galaxy. Tell me...what do you remember of the circumstances of my first exile? From Vylmira."

Taiia watched Atrios leave, her gaze lingering briefly on the closed door before returning to Voph. The shift in tone was difficult to miss. Whatever had brought him back to the galaxy, this was clearly closer to its heart. She settled a little more comfortably into her chair, one hand still wrapped around the warmth of her cup.

"I remember some." Her expression grew thoughtful. "You were exiled from Vylmira. There were circumstances surrounding it that were... complicated, even by our standards." A faint crease formed between her brows as she searched through memories that had grown old enough to blur around the edges. "I remember there being more to it than simple punishment. Something had happened, something serious enough that leaving was considered necessary." She paused, her gaze settling fully upon him again. "But I also remember that much of what happened was long before we met, and you didn't exactly share personal information freely." It was true that Voph seldom confided in others. Taiia seemed more interested in why he was asking than in pretending she remembered details she had never truly possessed.

"And if you're asking me now..." Her thumb moved slowly along the side of the cup. "...then I suspect whatever I was told at the time was not the whole of it." She leaned back slightly. "So tell me what changed."
