SPECIAL FEATURES
- Excellent Range
- Toxic After-Effect
- Incendiary After-Effect
- Woodchipper: The Spinneret's range, lethality, and reliability are excellent, and are the result of similar technologies honed to perfection over time.
- Slow-Firing: While more reliable than previous generations of such weaponry, the Spinneret is in turn more restrained, and slower to fire.
A further miniaturization of Helix's battle-proven phosphor-driver technology, the 57M's method of operation is by now a well-understood one, hammered into perfection on everything from small arms to the primary weapons of capital ships.
This starship-grade model functions precisely the same as its larger and smaller brothers. Precision magnetic fields transform a mass of active X18 into a chunk of hyperdense, hyper-hot material, then launch the resultant projectile at a significant fraction of lightspeed.
Like its forbears, the 57M enjoys greatly superior range, accuracy, and terminal effect when compared with laser/particle weaponry of a similar weight class. Few are the starfighters that can withstand so violent a kinetic impact, and fewer still are those capable of resisting the thermal/radiotoxic aftershock.
Older weapons of this sort are infamous for the long-lasting, crippling health problems they can potentially inflict on living tissue, and even a glancing hit can endanger an organic pilot long after the battle is over.
As such, the 57M causes three vectors of damage in a package carriable on a starfighter.
Such is the 57M's hitting power that it can prove a danger to larger, more powerful starships in numbers, proving its versatility as a light anti-capital ship weapon. However, it simply lacks the size and energy supply to perform in this capacity as well as its larger competitors.
