7:29am, July 1st 1916.
The British guns stop. An uncanny silence falls across the battlefield. The sound of birdsong is quite audible.
Then, all across the line, officers blow their whistles.

We all know why it happened, and how it happened, but it's still hard to think it actually DID happen.
The bloodiest day in British military history, and the start of a 5 month campaign across 15 miles of "no-mans land" as British and French troops led the attack against Germany at Somme.
100 years later, we never forget those who sacrificed their future so we could live ours.
