There in the darkness of the underbrush something lurked, long forgotten to the realm of men and the living. A vile resilience, secreted from root of weed and vine alike - permeating the very soil. It smelled of sickness, of death, of gut and rot. Such were its humble origins. Of course something this malevolent could not be blamed on a quirk of nature, an anomaly of science. No. The Dark Side. Concealed beneath decades, centuries even, it had remained inert. Unable to pierce the surface of the world on its own... Until now.

*Food.* The primal drive for survival driving the small rodent farther and farther into the muck of the forest. The creature had been sniffing its way over root and under branch searching for what scrap it could find. Insects, grubs, even low hanging berries it might be able to snatch before some other industrious animal did. Unfortunately it had not found much in the way of sustenance, in fact it was just that fact which found the small furry creature scurrying into a shadow of a large fallen tree. The log was weighed down with the weight of moss and peat, beneath no doubt succulent insects and oodles of tasty tasty grubs - or so the rodent assumed.In the flash of an instant the creature had realized its mistake. Too late. *Crunch!* With a violent crack the rodent's back had snapped, its body almost rent in two. Two obsidian orbs glimmered in the shadows, bared white teeth shimmering as they bore into the flesh of the creature - an ethereal scream echoing beneath the canopy of the forest. A raspy voice issued forth a single word between the gnashes of teeth and the squishing of the gritty meat of the rodent..
"Fooood..."
