The steady beep made her eyes flutter open.

A sound that time had slowly pushed away from intimate familiarity. A recognition that pushed at the edges of a word on the tip of your tongue. From speaking its name into reality as sensation returned to her with each passing beep. It wasn't a deep sound as her ears tracked the source. The strange realization that it wasn't a natural sound coming to her mind. But the pitch made her wince before the minutes passed by and pressed the sound away from thought.

Her eyes completely opened with effort to keep them that way. The heavy weight that threatened to plunge her back into sleep a looming thing atop each eyelid as she pushed herself to take in her surroundings.

But the room was so bright it stung to gaze upon anything for long.

The source of light was especially bright and threw little stars and rainbows across her vision as she tried to squint without letting herself go. Her eyes danced across the bland decoration of the ceiling as an idle thought played across her mind.

Would they let her color there?

Her gaze slowly drifted about as she tried to breath and found herself fighting against air that pushed into her lungs. The beeping became even louder as she thought about breathing. As though her effort was upsetting the thing beside her. Thoughts about the air that tried to push itself into her lungs causing her to struggle with the only bit of strength she could muster in the strange haziness she felt. She could feel her fingers tighten by her side. But the sheets felt wrong. Course or something against the tips of each digit. That scratchy sensation drawing her thoughts back to the air that was trying to choke her.

She had to move her hands. There was something on her face. Something she had to move so she could stop fighting the choking feeling.

The beeping became louder as she tried to move her arms. Wanted them to move as her gaze drifted sideways and tried to look down at them. Spying the tall stand beside her with a bag attached to it. A tube poked in the bottom filled with the same strange thing that was in the bag. She couldn't see where it ended, but it made her worry.

Why was that here? What was it doing? What is it?

She wiggled her fingers open and closed, feeling something strange as she did. Like something pressed against the back of her hand.

A wrongness about it that didn't entirely make sense as she opened and closed her fingers once more trying to figure it out. To make her fingers and arms respond to her. To get the thing on her face off so she wasn't choking!

The rhythm of the beeps had changed into a sharp and shrill sound all the while. Sounds started to form from nowhere that seemed to get louder the more the thing beside her made noise. The feeling of wrong in her hand getting worse as she tried to pull back against the unknown weight keeping her hand down. A sharp discomfort she had no words or understanding of as something on the wall moved.

Faces entered. More noise was made as bodies gathered around her. As hands came into view as she tried to twist and keep away from them.

The air began to choke her beyond comfort as she tried to make them get away. Her mouth opened as forced air gagged and confused her further. She wanted them to go away. To stop making noise. To make the walls pretty. To let her breath. The white walls were blurring as she felt something pressed against her. More weight as another loud noise was made. More faces entered as she flailed against them in panic.

The beeping became louder and faster as she cried and pushed against the weight. Until it all stopped. Everything stopped. Until everything was silent.

All except the slow and continuous beep.
