Ever since Ko had lost their lightsaber on Ryloth Ko has been pestering his master to let train using a San-Ni Staff. Although he never admitted it he was an appreciator of Atrisian culture. Not just in their animation but various martial arts movies as well, and always wanted to be skilled with the weapons. Watching them display flawless yet flashy use of the awesome weapons. His Cathar master wondered why he had yet to make another lightsaber to replace his. But his first was too sentimental and he wanted to go back. He knew that it was still out there, possibly back on Ryloth still. Until then he wanted to make do without it.

After some time he was under the impression that Jonyna would finally allow him to use one. To his disappointment he did not get a San-Ni Staff, he got a stick. Ko tried his best to hide his frustration, concluding that his request was just lost in translation and that Jonyna didn’t know what he was actually asking for and just figured a wooden stick would satisfy him.

However, Ko tried to look at the silver lining. Maybe it was some elaborate lesson The Force was trying to teach him? Or he was just overthinking things, which he was prone to do. Taking the durable stick Ko cut it up and fashioned it into three sections connected via thin rope. Creating a mock wooden replica of the San-Ni Staff for himself to practice and train with.

. . .

After spending some time training and familiarizing himself with the weapon he quickly learned that if it wasn’t made of hardwood he’d probably lop one of his own limbs off on accident or bisect himself. Even bonking myself in an accident felt awful. It became a goal of his to come out of his training each day with less bruises than the last time he trained.

He also came to appreciate how dangerous just a few pieces of wood attached by flexible rope could be. Even without all the added tech of a genuine San-Ni Staff, using The Force to increase his wooden imitation’s durability and potency could make for a formidable force multiplier in combat.

Near the end of one of his practice sessions Ko recalled a cool maneuver he saw in a martial arts movie. He felt confident that he’d be able to pull it off now, even just from memory. It was pretty simple, just a backflip followed by a cool flourish of the weapon. Standing in the middle of the training room Ko took in a deep breath through his antiox mask. Before jumping up into a backflip…

Things rapidly spiraled out of control as screwed up his flip. Not fully rotating and landing flat on his stomach and face. Ouch. Except he seemed to automatically continue with the maneuver despite already failing. Perhaps he was so stunned his body didn’t even know it should just quit now. Ko tried to get himself back up onto his feet while swinging the weapon around uncontrollably. Losing his footing as he tried to get up Ko stumbled over to the side. Hitting his head as he fell over and knocked himself into the wall quite harshly. Finally dropping the weapon his clawed hands grabbed his head as he groaned from the pain.

At least nobody else was around to witness his failure in the room. However, Ko still feared that even without anyone around the temple might still sense the tsunami of embarrassment he felt towards himself at that moment. However, despite that rather less than stellar performance. Ko remained undiscouraged, what kind of Jedi would he be if he buckled under such weak adversity. No. He would master the San-Ni Staff one day. Hoping to live up to the awesomeness of martial arts icons he looked up to so much growing up.
