GALACTIC ALLIANCE DEFENSE FORCES

HOW-TO START
If you’re reading this, you’ve decided you want to write an army grunt. Magic and lightsabers aren’t for you. Instead you want your rifle, your water canteen and to be pointed at the nearest hill to take.

Fair enough! Below is a bulleted list. Go through it one by one and you will be ready to defend the Galactic Alliance with pure grit in no time.

  • Read the Overview section to get an idea what the GADF is about.
  • Check out the Structure section and you will know the hierarchy, the ranks and sizes of the groups in play.
  • Finally the Group section will showcase the possibilities when it comes to creating your own military group and the ones that currently exist.
CONTEXT
To be a member of the GADF is to desperately want to defend the Galactic Alliance from all threats. External and internal. Aesthetic wise it borrows a lot from the Clone Troopers of the Galactic Republic, while some units also have their roots in the Rebel Alliance. This is only aesthetic however. The Alliance has no state-mandated clone army, currently clones are considered illegal, and its recruitment is volunteer-based with many benefits for the soldiers from free housing, education, healthcare and a guaranteed job program after honorary retirement.

There is a mandatory training period, before a prospective soldier is allowed to take to the field. Army cadets are most often sent to Balmorran System Command, whilst the Navy finds themselves schooling at Fort Bastion. Equipment is wholly sourced and distributed by the GADF from domestic manufacturers.

OVERVIEW
The Galactic Alliance Defense Forces, or GADF, is the combined military entity assigned to safekeep the Galactic Alliance, its heartlands in the Core and beyond.

It consists of three branches, however only two are officially acknowledged, while numerous sub-branches exist.

The
Navy, concentrating on space superiority.
Notable sub-branch: The Starfighter Corps, The Marines
The Army, concentrating on land dominance and fortification.
Notable sub-branch: The Pathfinders
The Strategic Intelligence Agency, concentrating on (counter-)intelligence.
Notable sub-branch: Classified

When the Galactic Alliance was a fledgling nation it heavily relied on the Planetary Security Forces (PSFs) of its member-states. As the GA matured and more worlds joined it became clear a more structural approach was necessary to keep the nation safe. The GADF was reorganized and with increased defense spending, stemming from fears of Imperial aggression, outfitted to be increasingly independent and capable of defending the whole Alliance on its own.

While the PSFs are still called on for support and member-worlds still directly assist with Alliance operations, the GADF is now the primary method through which expansion and defense is conducted.

STRUCTURE
The structure below is mainly for flavor purposes. You are not expected to progress through the ranks and are free to pick whichever rank fits the best for your stories, but you are encouraged to follow some consistency for the sake of others. Such as marines using Army ranks, because being an ‘Admiral’ for ground forces would be confusing, et cetera. Exceptions that require staff approval are marked with an asterisk (*).

GROUPS
CURRENT ACTIVE GROUPS

The GADF has 3 main branches (Navy, Army and SIA), but as threats against the Galactic Alliance evolve so does the GADF evolve with it to respond to them in equal measure.

Beyond the regular hierarchy within the 3 main branches they also contain numerous groups under their umbrella.

For example, the
Navy has their Marines. Cutthroat special operatives that go through specialized training to accomplish missions that nobody else can handle. Being a marine means honor, courage, and a long-held Alliance Tradition of fighting for freedom.

The
Army has their Pathfinders. Elite ground combatants, these soldiers are trained to survive in any planetary environment with no support from other units and few resources. Specializing in rapid offensive deployment, these are the few and the brave - the boots on the ground.

The
SIA is a different beast entirely. They are a clandestine organization with an opaque structure led by the mysterious Director M. This is exactly the way she likes it. She only answers to two things, the Galactic Alliance constitution and the Supreme Commander of the GADF.

If the regular GADF nor its existing groups interest you, you are encouraged to group together with other people and create your own sub-group! Simply keep in mind the notes mentioned above, the feel of the Galactic Alliance and go wild with it.

Galactic Alliance staff is always available for any questions you might have.
