ZAM ZAM NOLA-BAY

BACKGROUND

Zam Zam Nola-bay was once a Jedi Knight and distant relative to Saone Nola-bay . He was never especially distinguished, but he was capable, dependable, and well liked by the younglings he helped train. That part of his life ended when the Sith captured him and took him to a prison on a world he can no longer identify.

He was held there for eleven months. His captors did not try to turn him to the dark side. They wanted to see how much of him would remain after they stripped away everything he relied on to understand himself and his surroundings.

They kept him awake for days, denied him silence, mispronounced his name until the wrong version began to sound familiar, and gave him conflicting accounts of his own past. Eventually, he could no longer tell the difference between what he remembered and what they had told him. Zam Zam escaped during a prison transfer when an unrelated attack threw the facility into chaos.

Most of what happened between the prison and his eventual recovery is gone. The Jedi who returned was not the same man who had been captured. His sense of time and place comes apart without warning, and he does not always know whether what he sees is happening now, happened before, or never happened at all. The Order did not know what to do with him and made little effort to find out.

Zam Zam is dangerous, but not because he wants to hurt people. In the wrong moment, he may mistake a harmless person for a threat or react to something that is not there. He has attacked people who were trying to help him. On two recorded occasions, he also spared people who were attempting to kill him, though he could not explain why afterward.

PERSONALITY

Zam Zam speaks quietly and rarely changes his tone. Threats, jokes, apologies, and memories of his captivity are all delivered with the same slow, even cadence. Most people find that more unsettling than if he shouted.

He also counts things. Doors, footsteps, the pauses between sentences. Sometimes he does it under his breath, and sometimes he says the numbers aloud. He sometimes laughs at things no one else notices. It is usually brief and genuine, followed by a sudden stillness, as though the sound caught him off guard. At other times, he speaks to someone who has already left or to someone who was never there. When corrected, he may look confused for a moment before carrying on with the conversation.

Zam Zam does not set out to be cruel. His behavior is shaped by what was done to him, and even he cannot always predict how he will react. Reasoning with him is difficult because fear, pain, and threats do not affect him consistently. At times, he seems almost indifferent to his own survival. Those who spend enough time around him often notice that he is still trying to be kind. The instinct remains, but he cannot always recognize the right moment or find the right way to act on it.

STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES

STRENGTHS​

Nothing Left to Perform — Zam Zam has no image to maintain and no reputation he cares about protecting. That makes him difficult to read in a negotiation or a fight. His reactions are inconsistent, and even he may not know what he is going to do next.

Fluent in Fracture — After eleven months of having his own memories and perceptions twisted, Zam Zam knows how easily a person can be made to doubt what they see and remember. He can unsettle someone with a few carefully chosen words, without using the Force at all.

The Force Without the Filter — His connection to the Force is unreliable, but when it answers him, he acts without the restraint or hesitation expected from a trained Jedi. He does not always stop to consider what his actions might cause.

Unkillable by Reputation Alone — Neither the Jedi nor the Sith know what to make of him. Because no one is certain what he wants or what he is capable of, few are willing to risk confronting him directly. That uncertainty has kept him alive more often than skill.

WEAKNESSES​

He Cannot Always Tell You're Real — In his worse moments, Zam Zam genuinely cannot distinguish a present threat from a remembered one, or a friend from an interrogator from years ago. This makes him dangerous to approach carelessly, and tragic to approach carefully, since there's no guaranteed way to reach the version of him that's actually in the room.

The Room Has to Stay the Same Size — Sudden environmental change such as a door slamming, a light cutting out, being moved somewhere new without warning can trigger a genuine, involuntary spiral. In that state he is unpredictable and occasionally violent toward whoever is nearest, friend or otherwise, and has no memory of it clearly afterward.

No Reach, No Guard — A dagger has none of a lightsaber's range, and Zam Zam has no formal answer for an opponent who keeps their distance — a blaster, a pike, a lightsaber wielded with any real reach discipline can hold him off entirely if he can't close the gap. He knows this, which sometimes makes him reckless about trying to close it anyway. Nothing Between the

Blade and Him — Without a lightsaber's ability to block blaster bolts or parry another blade at range, Zam Zam has functionally no defense once a fight goes to ranged fire or gets fast. He relies entirely on the Force to move him out of the way, and the Force does not always answer when he needs it to.
