They had created their lightsabers together. Trained together. And when he died, Silara was determined not to lose what little of him she could salvage. While it was unfortunate that the blow back of Force energy that had killed her brother had also cracked his lightsaber crystal, she persevered in her attempt to create a weapon using the crystal in honor of her brother's memory.
Bending the crystal to her control was the easiest part, creating the hilt was the harder part. While she had little experience with constructing lightsabers, she used the hilt she already had and allowed the Force to guide her in compensating for the damaged crystal. Unlike her brother's preference however she had to further compensate for the dual phase style she preferred.
It was a challenge she was readily willing to accept.
