The Camelot estate was quiet in the early morning. Too quiet, perhaps. Guinevere lay beneath the blankets staring at the ceiling, listening to the soft hush of a house that had not yet begun to stir. Her parents were almost certainly still asleep. Taza would not come to wake her for another few hours. By all rights, Gwen should have been asleep too. Instead, she was painfully, hopelessly awake.

Her stomach twisted again. She rolled onto her side, squeezed her eyes shut, and immediately regretted it. Closing them only made it easier for her mind to wander back to the reason she was awake in the first place.

Lancel.

Today he was keeping his promise. It had seemed like such a clever idea when she had asked him.

Teach me how to misbehave.

The request had been born from desperation more than anything else. If Lancel wanted no part of their engagement, and he had made that abundantly clear, then perhaps there was a way to make herself unsuitable enough that the entire arrangement would simply collapse beneath the weight of her impropriety and their shared deviant and bad influence.

At least, that had been the thought. Now, lying awake before sunrise, Gwen was beginning to wonder if she had completely lost her mind. Lancel had chosen where they would meet. Somewhere just beyond the estate grounds, near the little town not far from Camelot. What came after that? She had absolutely no idea. That was perhaps the worst part. Her stomach flipped at the thought of spending an entire day alone with him.

Gwen sat up abruptly and pressed both hands over her face. This was ridiculous. They had been alone together before. Taza had left them in the gardens, after all. But even then there had always been people somewhere nearby. Servants passing along distant walkways. Guards. Gardeners. Someone who might appear if called.

Today would be different. Today she was willingly walking into the unknown with him, and, rather alarmingly, part of her was excited about it. She threw the blankets aside before she could dwell on that thought any longer.

Getting dressed had proven to be its own ordeal. She had no idea where Lancel intended to take her, which meant she had no idea what she was supposed to wear. A gown seemed impractical if his definition of misbehaving involved anything particularly adventurous, but dressing too casually felt almost worse. Eventually, Gwen had settled on a fitted shirt with the sides deliberately cut away, exposing a sliver of skin along her waist.

She had spent several minutes insisting to herself that she had chosen it because it was comfortable. That was all. Nothing more.

Unfortunately, her traitorous mind kept dragging her back to the gala. His hand, and his thumb brushing slowly over bare skin. The memory sent a faint warmth creeping up the back of her neck.

Gwen frowned at herself in the mirror. She wanted that to happen again. Maybe. Possibly. She did not know. That uncertainty somehow made it more embarrassing.

"Stop it," she whispered to her reflection. Her reflection looked unconvinced. There was no use getting excited about Lancel. He did not want her. Whatever happened had an expiration date. This was just an efficient arrangement. That was all.

She had finished the outfit with pants. Guinevere stared at herself as though the woman in the mirror had personally betrayed every expectation ever placed upon the daughter of Camelot. Had Lancel ever even seen her wearing pants? She could not remember. That realization made the entire thing feel strangely scandalous, which was absurd. They were only pants. Still, she had packed several other things into a small bag, just in case whatever Lancel had planned required something more appropriate. Or less appropriate. No... She was absolutely not thinking about that.

Gwen tightened the strap of the bag and glanced toward her bedroom door. The house was still quiet. That brought the other source of her nerves rushing back. She was sneaking out. Actually sneaking out. Not slipping away from an event with Elian for an hour. Not disappearing into some garden while Taza sighed and pretended she had not noticed. Those little adventures had always existed within boundaries. Someone knew where she was. Someone knew who she was with.

This time, no one would. There would be no note, no explanation, no chaperone, and no one to even know she was leaving. Her heart began pounding harder. There were so many emotions rolling through her. Fear...Excitement....Guilt.... Something dangerously close to exhilaration. All of it tangled together until she could barely tell one feeling from another.

Gwen looked at herself in the mirror one last time. Her hair was in place. Her clothes looked acceptable, if somewhat bolder than usual. Her small bag was packed. She looked exactly like herself, and somehow not like herself at all.

"This is a terrible idea," she whispered. Then she crossed to the window. Opening it quietly proved easier than expected. Climbing through it did not. Gwen awkwardly maneuvered herself onto the ledge, pausing once when her boot scraped against the stone. Slowly, carefully, she continued downward, finding footholds in the decorative stonework she had never once considered useful until this exact moment.

When her boots finally touched the grass below, Gwen nearly laughed from relief. She had done it. She had actually done it. The realization sent another thrill racing through her. She quickly pulled her cloak tight around herself, making sure the hood was up, and hurried across the grounds before courage had a chance to abandon her.

Every shadow suddenly seemed suspicious. Every window looked occupied. Every distant sound convinced her she was seconds away from hearing Taza call her name, and yet nothing happened. Gwen slipped beyond the estate grounds and started toward the meeting place Lancel had chosen, her pace quickening as the first traces of morning light stretched across Naboo.

With each step, the nerves returned. What exactly did Lancel consider misbehaving? What was he planning? Where were they going, and why did the thought of finding out make her heart beat even faster? By the time the meeting place came into view, Gwen had pulled her cloak tighter around herself, one hand curling nervously around the strap of her bag.

Then another thought occurred to her. A far less pleasant one. What if he was not there? Gwen slowed. Her stomach sank. What if Lancel had never intended to come? What if this had all been some elaborate joke at her expense? She had climbed out of her bedroom window before sunrise, lied through silence to practically everyone she loved, dressed in clothes she was still not entirely certain she had chosen for innocent reasons, and walked all the way out here.

For him.

Guinevere swallowed and continued toward the meeting place anyway.

He had better be there.

Lancel had expected many things of Guinevere that morning. Timidity, perhaps. Second thoughts, certainly. There had even been some small and wicked part of him which anticipated finding her standing precisely where propriety had deposited her all her life, dressed for an outing approved by mothers, governesses, and whatever ancient deity had first invented respectable daughters.

He was not prepared for trousers. For several seconds, Lord Atria simply looked at her.

There was no mistaking the nature of it, nor any possibility of rescuing the observation by calling it polite. His gaze travelled slowly from her face, downward over the unfamiliar shape of her clothing, lingered with considerably less discipline than a gentleman ought possess, and then returned at last to her eyes. Whatever clever greeting he had arranged beforehand disappeared entirely.

"Good Gods." The words escaped him with such sincerity that he very nearly laughed at himself. He recovered by degrees, although not before looking at her once more, this time with the faint narrowing of his eyes which suggested that the first examination had somehow been insufficient. "I had intended to corrupt you gradually."

There was accusation in the remark, though his mouth betrayed him with the beginnings of a smile.

He stepped nearer, taking his time about it, and for all the teasing quality of his expression there was something decidedly warmer underneath. Lancel had always considered attraction an uncomplicated business. A glance, then a pursuit, and amusement, and then, when novelty had exhausted itself, an ending. Guinevere had proven distressingly resistant to that entire arrangement.

"You have made a rather unfair beginning of it," he continued. "I had plans. There was to be a careful descent into scandal. Minor improprieties first. Questionable company. A little dishonesty. Perhaps, with sufficient dedication, public dancing."

His eyes betrayed him again. He did not apologise for them. "And now I find you have escaped your household before breakfast dressed like this." His voice lowered slightly. "You may leave me with nothing to teach."

Lancel offered her his arm with exaggerated formality, as though escorting her into some royal reception rather than conspiring in her disappearance. "Come along, Princess. Before somebody sensible finds us."

He led her away from the estate grounds and down the quiet lane beyond, where the early morning mist still hung low between the trees. Only when they rounded the bend did his chosen conveyance become visible.

A sleek speeder waited beneath the branches. Lancel glanced from it to Guinevere, and the smile that followed was positively indecent. "Your education," he said, "begins here."

She let out a small breath of relief when she saw him standing there. She hadn't really expected him to abandon her. Not truly. Still, Lancel had proven himself far more complicated than any man she had ever been told about. Then again, perhaps all men were like this. She wouldn't know. She had never been allowed to find out.

Approaching him, she offered a tentative smile. It lasted only until he began to speak.

"And now I find you have escaped your household before breakfast dressed like this."

Her smile faltered. Had she done something wrong? She glanced down at herself almost instinctively. She had thought the pants were sensible. Better than a dress, surely, especially when she had no idea where he intended to take her or what they would be doing.

Panic began creeping into her chest. Playing dress-up was something she understood. She had spent most of her life being arranged, polished, and presented like a living doll. Stand here. Wear this. Smile. Don't speak unless spoken to. She knew how to become whatever pretty thing her parents required of her.

But pretending to be an ordinary person? That was something else entirely. Even now, as Lancel's gaze traveled over her, she misunderstood it completely. Heat crept into her cheeks as she assumed he was inspecting some mistake she had made.

"Don't... don't you like it?"

The question came out much smaller than she intended, and the moment she heard herself say it, she wanted to disappear. With a sudden and deeply embarrassing clarity, she realized she had wanted him to like it. She had wanted to impress him. What an incredibly stupid thing to want. Lancel Atria was perhaps the last man in the galaxy she ought to develop feelings for. Whatever this strange alliance between them was, it had an expiration date. He wanted his freedom. She was helping him obtain it. That was all. Anything beyond that was foolishness.

She immediately resolved to stamp the thought out before it had the opportunity to become anything more dangerous. Clearing her throat, she forced herself to straighten.

"Well, no matter. I brought other clothes, Lord Atria. Just in case this outfit would not suffice."

She tried very hard to make it sound as though his opinion didn't matter one way or another. When he offered his arm, she hesitated only a moment before taking it and allowing him to lead her toward the speeder. With every step, however, a new thought whispered at the back of her mind. This was probably her last chance to turn around. She could abandon this ridiculous plan. She could hurry back through the gates, sneak into the estate, crawl beneath the covers of her bed, and pretend none of this had ever happened.

At the speeder, she glanced back. The Camelot estate loomed in the distance, familiar and imposing. Her entire life was somewhere behind those walls. Her room. Her clothes. Her parents. Everything she knew. For one fleeting moment, she considered running back to it.

The instinct vanished almost as quickly as it came. Whatever happened today, this was the only plan they had managed to devise that might actually set Lancel free, and she wanted that for him. She wanted that for him more than she probably should. There was another possibility taking shape in the quiet corners of her mind, though, one she had not dared voice to him and scarcely dared admit to herself.

Her parents intended to lock her away if she did not fulfill her purpose. They would call it protection, of course. They always did. But if they truly meant to imprison her... Her gaze shifted from the estate to the speeder waiting before her. Then perhaps today would not be the only time she ran away. If that day came, she couldn't survive the galaxy as the sheltered little doll they had raised her to be.

She would need to know how to disappear into it. How to behave. How to survive. How to be free. Whatever Lancel Atria intended to teach her today, she suddenly realized she needed those lessons every bit as much as he needed her help to escape his fate.

She took a breath, turned her back on Camelot, and climbed into the speeder.

"Like it?" Lancel repeated, with an expression of such genuine astonishment that, for once, he quite forgot to be charming. "My dear Princess, I have been attempting to remember my own name since you arrived."

The admission escaped him rather more freely than he intended, though he was not so troubled by the truth of it as to blush. Instead, his eyes travelled over her once more, with considerably less pretence at discretion than before, before returning to her face with a thoroughly satisfied smile.

"And I fear your change of clothes shall be quite unnecessary. It would be a terrible shame to deprive the good people of Naboo of such a spectacle."

He offered her his hand to assist her into the speeder, though whether this was an exercise in gentlemanly conduct or merely an excuse to take hers was a matter upon which Lancel himself had not thought to deliberate. Once she was comfortably seated, he rounded the vehicle and settled behind the controls.

"Now, as to the business of our first lesson, I have considered several possibilities." He brought the engine to life, but made no effort to depart just yet. "There is a rather delightful establishment where the nobility are seldom seen, and where I am reliably informed the serving wenches of Naboo are among the most particular creatures in the galaxy. Quite impossible to please, apparently, though I have always considered such reports an invitation rather than a warning."

He looked quite pleased with himself.

"Alternatively, there is a dancing establishment where the company is considerably less respectable than the music, and where I suspect your attire would be received with an enthusiasm bordering upon the indecent."

He paused, considering her attire again, this time with something approaching practical interest.

"Though I confess, dressed as you are, I should be rather inclined towards somewhere that deserves the honour of your appearance. A garden promenade, perhaps, or a fashionable café where we might outrage polite society merely by enjoying ourselves."

His fingers settled lightly upon the controls.

"These, however, are merely suggestions. I have no intention of replacing the tyranny of your parents with one of my own. You shall decide where we go, what we do, and when we return. Indeed, should you wish to spend the entire day doing something so dreadfully respectable that I expire from boredom, I shall endeavour to meet my end without complaint."

He turned towards her, his expression softening into a smile.

"Well, Princess? For once in your life, the day belongs entirely to you. What shall you make of it?"

Gwen had certainly hoped that Lancel would approve of her choice of attire, but she hadn't quite expected such an enthusiastic response. A delicate blush crept into her cheeks, and she lowered her gaze for a moment, unable to suppress the pleased little smile that tugged at her lips.
"Well, I am very glad you like it," she admitted, smoothing an imaginary wrinkle from her shirt. "Though I should hate to be responsible for you forgetting your own name. I imagine that might make introductions terribly difficult."

There was a hint of teasing in her voice, though the lingering pink in her cheeks betrayed just how much his compliments had pleased her.
She accepted his offered hand and settled into the speeder, listening with growing interest as he outlined their possibilities. Though, as he continued, her expression shifted from curiosity to something approaching alarm. Serving wenches who were impossible to please? Establishments frequented by less than respectable company? And just what, precisely, did he mean by enthusiasm bordering upon the indecent?

"Oh," she managed, blinking at him. "Those are certainly... interesting suggestions."

Her fingers busied themselves with straightening the fabric of her pants, and she glanced out at the city as though the passing scenery might offer some guidance. She had wanted an adventure, certainly, but she was beginning to suspect that Lancel's definition of an adventure was rather different from her own. The garden promenade suddenly sounded remarkably appealing. Still, she couldn't help feeling that choosing something so familiar would rather defeat the purpose of their outing.

She hesitated, considering her options before looking back at him. "Perhaps... the dancing establishment?" The suggestion emerged rather more tentatively than she'd intended, though a small smile soon followed it. She gave a soft, slightly nervous laugh.

"You must promise not to laugh at me if I make a complete fool of myself?" There it was, the truth of what was worrying her deep down. She was afraid she wouldn't impress him. It was beyond foolish to feel this way about Lancel. She felt angry at herself and glanced away from him, willing herself to try and squash these feelings immediately.
