Two worlds collide, rival nations

Location: ODESSEN - Aboard Her New Ship (which is docked on the Planet)
Tags: Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor

It was late, and most of Odessen lay quiet under a blanket of stars. Though guards still patrolled the perimeter of the Hidden Path's secret base, Katarine was not among them tonight. She was tucked away in one of the sleeping cabins aboard her new ship, still nameless, still untested. Superstition said it was bad luck to fly a ship without a name. Personally, Kat thought it was just bad luck for her to fly any ship. Connel had laughed and told her this one was "idiot-proof." She wasn't entirely convinced. Maybe it was. Maybe he had too much faith in her. Either way, she planned to ask someone to sit with her for that maiden flight, just in case.

As for Connel, Kat wasn't sure if he'd already left for The Enterprise or if he was still sleeping aboard. The two of them had fallen into the habit of spending most nights together lately, not physically, but just talking. Long, late conversations that blurred the lines between exhaustion and comfort. It was... nice. Easy. And having Buster around made it even better. True to her word, Kat had prepared a cabin for both of them. They were always welcome.

Last night, when sleep finally claimed them, Kat had retreated to her own bunk. Connel might have wandered off after, or he might have crashed here too. Either way, she hadn't checked. Now, she lay still, curled on top a thin summer blanket. Her face was calm, breath soft and steady, two-toned hair fanned out across her pillow. She dreamed of Naboo, of a beach she'd once visited with her husband. But this time, Connel and Buster were there instead. In the dream, she laughed as Buster chased a flying disc across the shoreline, the ocean sparkling behind them.

But dreams are fragile things.

The scene began to warp, shadows creeping in at the edges. The sky dulled, and the vibrant sea turned into a flat, dark mirror. Connel and Buster vanished. The beach melted away.

Malachor

She stood alone now, surrounded by its bleak, ruined horizon. Blackened stone crunched beneath her boots as she walked, not knowing where she was going, but knowing she had to go. The Force pressed in like a storm cloud, thick with darkness. Distant howls tore through the air. Her body tensed, but still she moved forward, drawn by something ancient. Something terrible.

A mountain loomed. She approached slowly, every step pulled from her as if through molasses. The terrain rushed forward, disorienting her, and in an instant she stood before a massive stone door, its surface covered in etched glyphs that shimmered faintly with power. She reached out. Her fingers brushed the cold surface, and the door creaked open.

Inside: tunnels, twisting caverns, paths leading everywhere and nowhere. The dream pulled her forward again, until she stood before a monolith of ice, tall, crystalline, and pulsing with unease. She stepped closer. Something inside called to her, something that felt...

Familiar.

She raised a trembling hand to the ice. For a moment, silence. Then, another hand met hers from the other side. Pale. Laced with black veins. Pain exploded through her skull.

The dyad.

Dormant since she'd awoken five years ago, it now surged back to life, raw and violent. Emotion flooded in, anger, grief, envy, confusion. It was overwhelming. Blinding. She screamed and fell to her knees. Hands clawed at her head, as if she could tear the pain out by force. The Force howled inside her, and then—

She woke.

Bolting upright with a sharp gasp, her throat raw, heart pounding. Her skin was damp, her breathing shallow, and the bare skin around her neck that was etched with ancient glyphs seemed to glow, standing out strongly against her pale skin. The special place in her mind, that quiet, hidden corner, was pulsing again. Faint, like a heartbeat echoing from across a great chasm.

Kat sat still, head bowed, fingers buried in her hair.

Then a sound made her look up. It was a soft scratching followed by a whine at the door. Buster? Either he was checking on her... or one of the ship's droids had detected the noise and come to investigate. She swallowed hard, trying to calm her breathing, trying to shake the dream. But it clung to her like smoke.

Malachor wasn't finished with her yet.

Buster… let her sleep.

Whine

He was eating granola as he checked out the systems. It was a nightly thing he did with his own vessel as you never know when you might get stranded. At first when he noticed the pup was whining, Connel initially thought Buster just wanted in, but then it hit him. He never does that. He realized Buster was trying to alert him to something unusual. Connel set down his granola and walked over to the systems panel, his brow furrowed in concern. The pup's behavior was out of character, and it made him wonder if there was a deeper issue at play.

Turning the system check to “auto”, he walked up to where Buster was, realizing it was Kat’s quarters and was concerned.

Kat? You okay?

He wasn’t planning on staying, but if something was going on, he needed to at least settle his concern. He wouldn’t just barge in though, she needed to say something, there was a health sensor aboard, and that hadn’t gone off yet, so.

It's a primitive clash venting years of frustrations

Kat was still trying to shake off the dream as the whining outside her door got more persistent. A moment latter she heard Connel's voice. She felt oddly relieved he was there, which was concerning since she had learned to be alone and depend on nobody. That was a problem for a different day though. Today she was too shaken up to worry about it.

She got up and crossed the room lightly then hit the button that slid the door sideways. There was Buster, and Connel looking as if he hadn't been to sleep yet. For a second her eyes creased with worry. He needed sleep, especially because his life could get dangerous at any second. She felt Buster's paw on her bare leg and bent down to scoop the little pup up into her arms. His warmth was an immediate relief and now that the dream was subsiding she felt a little embarrassed.

"Yea.. sorry... I..."
There was no point pretending. She was visibly shaken and she knew he could sense it. Besides they were closer now and should be past lies to save face.

"I had a dream... only... it was more. It was real. I..."
She frowned, wondering how to explain it. Did he have any experience with Force visions? Did she sound like a crazy person?

"I need to go to Malachor. "

Buster licked her face and she blinked and smiled at him. "I'm sorry if I woke you. You guys need to go get some sleep."

Whine

As she practically fell out of the doorway, Connel was ready to catch Kat. It was when she was embarrassed, and Buster worried about her that he knew something was going on. It was her business, and he would not pry if she did not want to divulge. However he did stand there, ready to prop the woman up if she needed it as she still looked to be a bit disoriented.

When she told him about the dream she had, he could feel the uneasiness about it. Clearly that meant, especially with her concern of how real it was, that it was something else. You had a vision. He would not bring up how visions are only a POSSIBLE future, because she probably knew that better than him, and it was not going to help at the moment.

Malachor? He had never been there, but had heard the stories. That is when he stepped aside to let her come out. Buster even shifted.

Buster can sleep any time… I’m not going anywhere. When do we go? If the stories were even remotely true, he would not let her go alone.

Bravely we hope against all hope

Her eyes flew wide in shock, he wanted to come with her. She shook her head instantly, disbelief tightening in her chest. "No. Absolutely not."

The memory of what she'd seen still clung to her like smoke: wild beasts stalking the shadows, twisted corridors laced with traps, a place built to consume the unprepared.

Buster squirmed in her arms, eager to be free. She set him down gently, then stepped backward into her room, fingers pushing the hair off her damp neck in a restless, anxious motion.

She turned back to Connel, struggling to find the words that might change his mind. "Look," she said, voice low but urgent, "I think this might be tied to something... darker than we thought. A cult. And if I'm right, then this whole thing is a trap, carefully laid and waiting."

She dropped onto the edge of her bed, spine stiff, her deep green eyes locking onto his with a raw intensity. "If something happened to you because I dragged you into this mess…" Her voice faltered for a second. "I'd never forgive myself. This could be a suicide mission."

Well technically it was a rescue mission... but the thing they were rescuing was more dangerous than any beast on that planet. Either way it wasn't a good idea to drag Connel into this.

Totally understandable.

Whine

It was completely understandable that she would want to do this alone, if she was shook that much then Kat would not want anyone to be harmed one a trip like this. He could not leave Buster here alone, and he was not leaving her to do this alone, so that was that.

When she put Buster down, he immediately jumped back up at her, not to be picked up again, but to worry, he simply said. Alright. He was accepting it?

Not quite.

We won’t fly with you. Buster looked back at him and then her and then at him again as if to say “WTH?”

I’ll get us on my ship, and slice into your systems and just follow you. Or I can get the rest of Omega Squad and we all can go.? There it is. Either way, you’re not doing this alone. It’s only a “suicide mission” if you do.

Buster then jumped on her lap as if in agreement. Not up for debate. Buster decided.

There is so much at stake

Katarine stared at him, somewhere between extreme annoyance at his stubbornness and touched at his concern for her. It looked like he was coming whether she liked it or not. She thought of kicking his butt for one wild second, but that truly wasn't what she wanted. She sighed, frustrated but ultimately resigned to doing this with company. She pushed her hair up again, clearly nervous as she paced back and forth a few times.

Not up for debate. Buster decided.

She glanced back at him and though her face still seemed upset as his stubbornness her lips couldn't help but twitch like she wanted to smile. "Alright... Buster is the boss then. But we should probably do a brief before. There is a lot you need filled in on."

Buster pawed at her and she glanced down and smiled at him. "Yes you can come. But you have to be safe okay?"

She was annoyed, but it was clearly more out of protective concern. It made him feel oddly at ease as she was talking to Buster.

Bark

Gotcha covered.... Tapping the comm-link on his wrist.

[EXCLAMATION- Responding! Master Vanagor!] It was HK-88 (Caltin Vanagor's personal assistant droid) on the other end.

[HK, could you hone in on the beacon on my comm-link?]

[QUERY- Will I be working, or babysitting the mongrel?] Connel flashed an annoyed smile. HK’s vocalizers displayed hatred for Buster, but in fact the droid was VERY good with him, playful and highly protective. Connel still hated the talk.

[You will be defending one in need of protection against evil meatbags.] Connel just rolled his eyes.

[EXUBERANCE- Oh Master! You always know just what to say!]]

Cutting the comm-link with a sigh, he looked back at Kat. He’ll be here in a minute, and while he is one of “them”, HK is highly protective of me and anyone I point him to.

Seems our freedom's up against the ropes

Tags: Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor

Kat still wasn't exactly loving this idea, but at least with the droid she knew Buster would be protected. Or she thought that was the plan. Either way it was a relief. She didn't want either of them getting hurt because of her mess. She ran her fingers through her hair again, a nervous habit she had recently picked up, and sighed. The back of her mind, where the dyad was still felt tender and after all that time dormant it was a bit unsettling.

"Okay... start the prep to get us in the air. I'm going to get dressed."
She was still in her sleep clothes and that wouldn't do for a rescue mission. "Then we should probably talk so you know what you are getting into."

She gave Buster a quick pat on the head and turned towards the small closet, where she had put her jumpsuit the other night.

"Oh... and if it's bad luck to fly this thing without a name we might want to christen it. We are gonna need all the luck we can get." Her lips pulled up at the corners, almost a playful smile despite the anxiety she was feeling.

She was annoyed, but it was clearly more out of protective concern. As it seemed to dawn on the Jedi Master that he wasn’t going anywhere, nor was Buster, she seemed to be coming around, or giving up, it was what it was at this point.

Computer! Get to launch readiness. Simple as that, the droidbrains and the computer system could run the startup sequences and scan the ship itself for issues. Connel just smirked. Done. Do what you gotta do.

One thing Connel learned from his father for sure that was NEVER to argue when a woman feels she needs to clean herself up.

[EXCLAMATION- Master Vanagor! I have arrived.] It was HK-88 (Caltin Vanagor's personal assistant droid) who was walking up the ramp. Buster of course came running up happily and doing a little dance. [DISAPPOINTMENT- Oh, the mongrel. Come while I defeat you in open combat.] Before anyone could say anything, a “tug of war” rope dropped from the droid’s arm (it was actually climbing wire) that of course Buster went right for.

He’s good with Buster, and protective, but I don’t like him calling my best friend a “mongrel”.

[QUERY- Is that not what he is?] Connel said nothing as the droid led Buster away.

No talk necessary. You need help, I’m helping. Connel wasn’t naive, this was serious if she was this set against them being here, but he was ready for anything.

Does the crowd understand?

Tags: Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor

"Maybe that's just tin mans way of showing affection."

Katarine chuckled softly as the droid and Buster tugged playfully at opposite ends of a cable. When Connel addressed the ship and it obediently readied itself, she blinked in surprise and gave a small nod. "Wow… maybe I really can fly this thing." She grinned before slipping away to the refresher, changing clothes and tying her hair back, if only to stop herself from nervously running her fingers through it. A splash of cold water across her face steadied her, and with a deep breath she returned to the others.

Connel was already prepared, his determination to help her both steadying and endearing. She eased into the seat beside him, quietly impressed that the ship seemed to be managing everything on its own. Maybe it really was idiot-proof, and maybe she could fly it after all. Still, her gaze lingered on him, searching, a flicker of unspoken doubt passing over her features. If anything happened to Connel or to Buster she knew she'd never forgive herself.

She also knew Daxium would not take Connel's presence well. Her brother was dangerous in a way few could comprehend; his very skin carried poison, a touch enough to inflict grievous harm. Yet in her vision, he had seemed weakened, and the fact he was calling out to her gave her hope, either that he was ready to accept help, or that hibernation sickness would leave him too frail to lash out. Still, truth didn't matter when it came to her twin. The bond they shared meant even simple closeness with Connel would be enough to set him off. And that left her uncertain of how, or even whether, to warn Connel about the danger he was walking into.

The ship was up and running and lifting off to break atmosphere. The systems were prepared, she was sitting down, Buster was happily busy. Everything was ready to go, all that had to be done was coordinates entered into the navcomputer.

All you have to do now is speak into the nav computer where you want to go and let the system do the rest. He smiled and gestured to the galactic map. You can virtually touch the map and it will switch to where you want.

The systems were easy, and done with her in mind.

[EXCLAMATION- Let go of my rope you mongrel!] This could be heard from the common room in the back, if either of them looked back it was just a “tug of war” and fun, even if it didn’t sound like it.

Where to Mi’lady? This has a class 1 hyperdrive so you’ll get there quickly.
