The young Dantari had scurried away from the veridian temple, and again had not told anyone. He didn’t need anyone’s permission to go where he pleased. He was no caged or penned animal. Right?

Verida had so much abundant life compared to the savannahs of his homeworld. Most of its trees actually grew taller rather than wider. More cool running water that showed no signs of drying up every year. Many more small crawling things as well. It was lush and full of life even in places he didn’t usually expect.

Yet he wasn’t interested in the untamed parts of the world to this day. Instead he followed the bumpy roads to the nearest town.

Even when trying to dress in local garbs Dirk stood out like a sore thumb. Having tied his robe up rather crudely with rolled up sleeves. Or the awkward steps he took in the blocky sandals he wore showing inexperience. Even his gangly posture didn’t help him. But what was most obvious was his physical appearance. Long, wavy and loose hair paired with his darker skin and more defined brow ridge made it clear just from a glance that he was not a local. Yet not alien, instead possibly more unsettling…

Dirk was fascinated with seeing the people however. They seemed busy and quick. Most looked like they were on an individual mission. A flowing organized chaos. Like watching ants move in and out of their hill. It was like an amusement park for the wild Dantari adolescent.

At the sound of a commotion Dirk looked to his side where a wooden cart pulled by a man had keeled over dropping bags of… something onto the busy road. Scanning the scene Dirk approached as the man apologised to those around it may have inconvenienced while returning being paid little to no attention. Once they got their cart stable they bent down to try and lift the heavy sacks back into the cart. Needing to use both hands to do so. Standing at the scene Dirk leaned down and hoisted up one of the heavy sacks with one hand and then another with his free one. Feeling as if they were full of dirt, sand or some sort of grain. Wanting to help, Dirk placed the sacks back in the cart with the man. His lended strength helped to mend the little accident in rapid time.

With the last sack placed back in the cart the man finally looked to Dirk to thank them. But once they got a good look at the unusual lad there there was some hesitation. They paused, their eyes widened and their expression showed uncertainty. With a slight stutter they thanked Dirk before finally rolling away with their wooden cart. Muttering something under their breath about how it was “like seeing a ghost…”
