What the armies know in their hearts MUST become true...

Corvus returned to the Praxeum at the appointed time. She was alone and trusted that Adele would be there if and when required. She already knew the first priority. To learn Emptiness.

She reviewed what she knew from the Holocrons. Emptiness was a Control-based Force power. She had to empty her mind and allow the Force to flow through her, entering a deep meditation. In theory she would become oblivious to her surroundings. And it seemed that individuals in states of Emptiness were difficult to detect in the Force, and Force powers directed at them had little or not effect. Entering a state of Emptiness cleared and strengthened the individual's connection to the Force, allowing them greater control for a limited period of time after exiting Emptiness.

As when she started working on Force Valor, Corvus simply started by meditating. She cleared her mind and connected to the Force. She didn't expect anything special initially, she simply sought to enter as deep a meditation as she could initially.

Corvus reached a state of Meditation and relaxed. But she knew this wasn't enough and so reached out as far as she could to touch the Force. It was like trying to fit a Bantha in a womp-rat cage. It felt as though she was trying to accommodate too much of the Force. So she relaxed and slowly pulled it in. It was a passive experience, she was not 'doing' anything with the Force - just pulling it to her. It filled her and yet kept coming.

Her body felt more relaxed than it had ever done. Her mind emptied of thoughts. One by one they disappeared until there was nothing in her conscious mind but the Force. And she was purged of emotions too - all that remained was the Force. It was around her and inside her. It was as if she was at one with the Force. In a rare moment of lucidness, she felt as if she were the Force, indistinct from it. She was the Force and the Force was her. There was no Corvus, just the Force.

Corvus practiced this technique for seven days - only breaking to eat, drink and surprisingly sleep. But she found only a couple of hours were required for her to be fully awake again.

By the end of the week she was comfortable she could enter the state regardless of the situation and postponed the next phase until she had reached the rank of Master.

A few weeks after being granted the title of Master Raaf, Corvus returned to the Praxeum. She knew she didn't have to practice here but she felt in some way obliged to. She needed to allocate time to begin with and could not manage that back on Ossus with the daily distractions that being HeadMaster entailed. She'd kept up her daily practice of Emptiness and could now use the Force ability with the minimum of delay and was able to be so in tune with the Force that even though she had no conscious connection to the outside world, she was able to listen to the Force to inform her of what was happening. For in this state, she was the Force.

[member="Adele Adonai"] had recommended learning Serenity next. She'd studied from the various holocrons and had learned it was a brief meditative state that a Jedi could enter into to regain focus and power. Because it required patience, inner strength, and a deep connection to the Force, this ability was only attainable by Jedi Masters.

She also studied its use - by both Master's Yoda and Qui-Gon Jinn - to somewhat differing outcomes.

Corvus was used to deep meditation, often losing track of time in this state. Her one and only late arrival for a lesson was down to this very fact. So she'd taken quite naturally to the techniques so far but Serenity puzzled her. And she knew that doubt would lead to failure. She had to believe she would succeed and without that faith she would be doomed to try in vain.

She practiced solidly for two days. Reaching the state was not a problem - but it took far too long. Her understanding was that it should be brief but that it also required patience. These two instructions conflicted in her mind and she struggled to come to terms with them.

On the third day, Corvus practiced Alchaka. She needed to take her mind off the problems she was facing and found the intense physical exertion followed by the feeling of oneness with the Force invigorating. And then it occurred to her. Serenity was to be performed to regain focus and power. Tomorrow she vowed to exhaust herself by using the Force first and only then practice.

Corvus awoke early as usual and went for her normal run – this time around the halls of the Praxeum. Usually she would follow this with Meditation but she wanted to be as tired as she could before she considered connecting to the Force.

So she spent the next two hours practicing Teräs Käsi. Half a dozen dummies ‘died’ during the practice but by the end of it she was drained. And then she went to the hangar bay and, using Telekinesis, gently lifted star-fighters off the deck before returning them to the deck – and repeating this until she could do no more.

Finally she was physically fatigued and drained in her connection to the Force. This time, she entered the meditative state and she was like a sponge, sucking the Force too her rapidly.

She opened her eyes. It was partial success. Not she had to learn to do it without being completely drained. But that was what training was for after all.

The following day, Corvus repeated the ritual and will marginally greater success but not the step-change she was hoping for. And so she repeated this for the next three days and by the third, she was able to call the Force to her and regain focus and power without being totally drained to begin with. With continued practice, she knew she would be able to use this even in combat situations.

Which meant she was ready for Battle Meditation training to start. So for the rest of the day she read up on the subject and consulted every holocron she could find. Tomorrow she could start in earnest.

As ever, Corvus started with the theory. With access to the holocrons, she had all the information at her fingertips. So she started with the basics.

First she read the words of Arca Jeth:

“Every soldier knows that war is more than arms and armour, every warrior carries an image of impending victory in his heart. When the image shatters, to be replaced by defeat, he is beaten. But sometimes a warrior receives assistance from an unexpected source, an in-rush of light, blasting away his fear and despair, releasing new inner strength! Yes, a war is much more than arms and armour. Half of every conflict is the will to win. We are Jedi. We must recognize that the will to win, and the power of war, are given sometimes by the dark side. And sometimes, as dawn throws back the night, victory is given…by the light!”

She read them over and over until they were imprinted on her mind. She felt they would be a necessary part of any training she undertook and especially when she came to using the Ability for real.

Then she considered the basics of the Ability.

She learned that Battle Meditation was a Force ability which considerably boosted the morale, stamina, and overall battle prowess of an individual's allies while simultaneously reducing the opposition's combat-effectiveness by eroding their will to fight.

With the Force, a practitioner could coordinate entire fleets of ships, allowing them to perform at maximum efficiency, acting as a single entity with the ability to counter every enemy move quickly and effectively. Though ideal for meditating large-scale conflicts, battle meditation was also effective when employed for the benefit of one's comrades in small skirmishes, attacks, and duels.

The following day, Corvus reviewed what she’d learned the day before. Battle Meditation was the ability to use the Force to coordinate allies to work together with enhanced precision. It could also be used to simultaneously demoralize the opponents, reducing their combat effectiveness. Battle meditation was used to influence armies and fleets to win battles and even wars.

She learned that in times gone past, the Dark Lords of the Sith built meditation chambers in their warships. In the heat of battle, they would seal themselves in the chambers…and direct powerful visualizations upon the conflict that raged all around them." Corvus wondered if the Republic had such a ship at its disposal?

But the fact it could be used by the Dark-side was not lost on her. This perversion of Battle Meditation was apparently called Sith Battle Coordination by the Dark Lady Lumiya, but was later identified by Darth Caedus as "Sith Battle meditation".

Next Corvus studied those that were know to be able to use the Ability – to see if there were any hints or tips she could pick up. Lord Skere Kaan used Sith battle meditation during the New Sith Wars. Grand Admiral Nial Declann was a master of Sith battle meditation, using it to great effect during the Battle of Endor. Following Palpatine's death, the shock of the sudden removal of this influence threw the Imperial Navy into chaos and allowed the Rebel fleet to defeat them. Joruus C'baoth, the insane clone guardian of Wayland's Mount Tantiss, increased the victory percentage of Grand Admiral Thrawn's armies by forty percent via dark Battle Meditation.

Picking up from the day before, Corvus learned of Darth Caedus – who would use a meditation chair on board his personal star destroyer to amplify his powers.

It was here she found the most useful information. Caedus' early uses of the art were poor, as his first attempts only resulted in him being able to see the battle unfolding in his mind, not being able to directly influence it – but that suggested a step in the right direction. When he tried to dominate the wills of his subordinates via the Force he found that they were not so easily subjugated, and reacted with hostility to his psychic intrusion. Caedus would Flow-walk into the immediate future to see the next battle, and then return to the present to directly influence the battle to bring about the ends he desired. He shortly thereafter gave up the use of his meditation chair upon its destruction by Luke Skywalker and meditated battle directly from the bridge of the Anakin Solo. During the Second Battle of Fondor, Darth Caedus used Battle Meditation to dominate the collective wills of Fondor's ground forces, causing them to doubt their chances of victory and drop the planet's defensive shielding.

The next day, Corvus read the words of Odan Urr:

"With sufficient concentration, a Jedi – such as you or I – can strengthen the hopes of our allies and heighten the fears of our enemies…thus, what the armies know in their hearts MUST become true…because they believe it so strongly."

It was a quote she’d heard before.

He was the first Jedi Master along with Arca Jeth, and Nomi Sunrider to use this Ability. Odan-Urr used it during the Unification Wars, while Arca Jeth used it with great success during the Beast Wars of Onderon. Being naturally adept, Nomi Sunrider applied Battle Meditation in nearly every conflict she participated in, such as the Freedon Nadd Uprising and the Battle of Koros Major. It was also practiced by Bastila Shan during the Jedi Civil War and the Battle of Rakata Prime, with impressive results.

Next came an era she was very familiar with. During the New Sith Wars, the Ithorian Jedi Master Worror Dowmat used Battle Meditation to bolster the strength of Jedi Lord Valenthyne Farfalla and the Army of Light, as they fought against Lord Kaan's Brotherhood of Darkness. Dowmat also assisted his Jedi companions with his Battle Meditation when they confronted Darths Bane and Zannah on the planet Tython, ten years after the war's end. Dowmat's meditation provided the invigoration necessary for Johun Othone, Sarro Xaj, Echani Jedi Raskta Lsu, and Farfalla to contend with Darth Bane, who was himself being fueled by his dark side rage.

Slightly more recently, Grand Master Yoda was also quite skilled, having used Battle Meditation during his Mission to Vjun to empower the actor pretending to be him. With a mere touch, Yoda was able to saturate Palleus Chuff with feelings of hope and mission success, while simultaneously eliminating feelings of doubt and despair from the little man's spirit. Yoda also successfully meditated the conflict during the Battle of Kashyyyk.

Luke Skywalker studied the use of Battle Meditation at some point after the Battle of Endor from a book he found and his sister Leia also studied battle meditation from books recovered on Ossus, and employed her new ability against the reborn Emperor Palpatine.

Deciding that a practical approach was called for, Corvus sought records of pirate activity and where the Republic fleet were likely to engage. Joining the fray, she either took up a position on the bridge or a safe distance away on her own ship - sitting in the meditation chamber.

Following the examples of Caedus she learned over the next few months to see the battle unfolding in her mind. She was not able to influence it, but by the end of this period of learning, she was able to predict the next moves of either side and to therefore suggest tactics that would be decisive, knowing what the enemy would do next. It was my no stretch of the imagination Battle Meditation, but it was a step in the right direction - a big step.
