Private We've Got to Stop Meeting Like This

The daily affairs aboard the Harbinger of Absolution were hardly uneventful, even if they were slightly dull. There was seemingly no end to the meetings and reports that He had to oversee and partake in, the deluge of sheer information that had to be categorized and sorted through was simply taxing. A necessity to be sure of course but hardly exciting and interesting beyond simply seeing how His forces and operations were developing. Yet even He needed a break from the endless lines of text and data filtering in from all across the disparate enclaves of the Order of Wonosa, and He had quite the break in mind.

Darth Strosius had taken His leave from the logistics and information sessions in the meeting room for His own sake and sanity, calling a recess which His exhausted officers were perhaps even more appreciative of than He was. His stride back to His section of the vessel, not at all exclusively His own of course but rather simply a portion of the officer deck which He had requisitioned for His quarters and workshop, was blissfully silent and distinctly lacking in activity from any of the crew members or officers. Undoubtedly they were eager to find some reprieve and respite in the ship's canteen and recreation facilities.

Normally He would have mourned the loss of interacting with His crew and followers yet at the moment all He wanted was to get back to His workshop as swiftly as possible. Only once He crossed the threshold and the door behind Him slid shut did He allow Himself to heave a sigh and slump slightly from His typical composed posture. Darth Strosius stepped past His alchemical arrangements and forge, past His Oubliette and ritual materials, all the way to the rear of the workshop where the newest addition to His workshop stood. It comprised most of the rear wall, a flickering void that was occasionally interrupted by flashes of vibrant swirling colors and was held in place by a mixture of metal adornments and solid stone carvings.

He rolled His shoulders and let out another breath before stepping through the portal, inhaling as He emerged into the Nether in His more gleaming and brilliant form. One that He admittedly didn't care much for, however according to at least one of His beloveds it was far from an unpleasant sight. Speaking of which, Lina should have been around here somewhere. Darth Strosius rose from the ground beyond the portal and let His pale golden wings unfurl to their fullest extent as He reached out with His senses. "Now then, where have you gone off to?"

The Nether was an unforgiving chaotic landscape.

The force here felt different, more unpredictable and charged, it revealed the true shape of beings who stepped within its realm. Every venture beyond the portal had been catalogued, landmarks, creatures, phenomena, all of it that she could harness, anything that might lead to a closer understanding of its power.

And more importantly, closer to finding those he had lost.

Lina had felt him step through the portal, the nether rippled with his presence…or maybe to her it just felt like it did, she stood on the edge of the Forest of memories, bare feet half sunk into the ground beneath her, shadows swirling like smoke around them. Whispers echoed from behind the treeline, alluring and desperately trying to tempt her forward, but she knew its game all too well.

She exhaled a sigh and turned away, silent steps moving towards the large totem pole they had erected near the portal, a glowing green light shone at its top making it easy to see no matter how far you travelled. In her wake, a second or sometimes two behind her, an echo trailed.

A smile curved her lips as she his senses brushed her own and she reached back for him, dark orbs glittering as she scanned the horizon for the unmistakable glow of his wings. Blackened veins pulsed with power as the shadows around her swirled, climbing up her spine to form dark wings of her own that lifted her delicately from her feet carrying her towards him with unsettling speed.

Darth Strosius didn't have to wait long before a familiar presence brushed against His senses and His golden gaze was shifted down to watch as Lina returned to the totem. In truth He wasn't certain if it was there more for her genuine need and usage or if it was simply a manner of easing His concern about her wandering too deep into the Nether where He wouldn't have been able to find her. In spite of attempting to acclimate Himself more and more to this realm He still wasn't quite as comfortable here as He was in the living world.

Certainly not as comfortable as she was at least. Watching her trek through the unfamiliar alien landscape with such grace never ceased to amaze Him, although He did admit His bias towards her spectacle in general. Lina moved through the Nether just as easily as she did across a ballroom floor whilst Darth Strosius always seemed to find Himself "snagged" on one thing or another. And unlike a ballroom or forest in the real world, He could rarely simply barge His way through whatever it was that was in His path.

Thankfully though it didn't seem as though she'd force Him to come to her, a notion solidified as Lina took off from the ground and flew up towards Him. Quite quickly at that as well. Darth Strosius couldn't help the grin that spread across His face as He soared down to meet her, opening His arms wide as they met in the air and embraced. There was a bit of a spin as their momentum settled to a hover, His luminescent glow briefly intertwining with the darkness that she and her echo radiated, which caused Him to chuckle.

"You know typically only one of us should be swept off of our feet, beloved."

“Then I shall aspire to sweep you off yours more often, my love.”

Lina answered with a soft chuckle, her forehead resting against his as for a moment they simply held each other, hovering above the twisted landscape, oblivious to souls that might drift past them. She wanted to draw him closer, to let his warmth envelop her entirely.

These moments were too few and far between. The portal on the Harbinger made it easier for them to stay close, her presence was almost expected by his crew these days, though she rarely travelled beyond the officer deck. Not like she used to, at least.

Reluctantly she drew back. “Come, let us go back and you can bore me with the details of your day.” she teased, fingers interlacing with his as she led them slowly back towards the portal. He was not entirely comfortable here, and she always preferred to see his face when they spoke, and he would never do so here, not where everything was hellbent on killing a person.

Pausing at the portal she cast one look back over the crimson landscape before stepping through. There was a moment passing from one plane to the next where her feet felt light, before artificial gravity kicked in and they found weight again, and with it came the bone deep weariness that had become her constant companion.

The blackened veins took a moment to fade, shadows slowly receding as she stepped into what had become a shared work space. The steel should have been cold on her feet, but Lina was just as icy. She felt a trickle of something warm on her lip, her hand reaching gingerly to catch the blood from her nose with an exasperated sigh.

"Promises promises." His grin widened at her response, a satisfied hum leaving Him as they held one another. Serene in spite of the swirling world that they found themselves in. The moment was almost perfect, were it not for the absence of a certain Neti, but of course it couldn't last forever. In spite of how much He sorely wanted it to. Darth Strosius clicked His tongue in slight disappointment as Lina withdrew but of course He didn't argue, content to intertwine their fingers as they returned to the threshold.

"Well if you simply must know." He returned the tease with a light chuckle before they stepped back through the portal. Although He had been slowly becoming more accustomed to the veil through sheer exposure, there was still a somewhat jarring sensation that drove a shiver along His spine as He emerged back into the living world. Undoubtedly something that was just as attributable to His condition as it was His inexperience. Though His own circumstances weren't quite as disruptive to His form as hers had been as of late.

His hidden gaze snapped to the trickle of crimson almost the moment that it began to drip, the scent having reached Him even through His mask a moment before. Yet as ever the sight didn't stir His eternal thirst but rather His bottomless concern. Albeit a resigned one at this point. "Sometimes you make me question which of us needs to lean on the other more, and I never find myself settling on a proper answer." Darth Strosius noted as His gloved hands moved up and divulged Him of His mask.

The helmet loosened with a hiss and was was pulled off in one swift motion, His golden gaze lightly illuminating His pale features in the dim light as they settled back on her. "Not that I'm complaining necessarily of course. Just...wanted you to know." The "choir" that normally echoed His words were all but absent now that He spoke low and intimately, though never truly silent. "How are you feeling? Still disconnected? Do you need to sit down at all?" And so the fretting began.

Lina let out a low chuckle as she drew a handkerchief from a pocket bringing it gently to her nose as her gaze moved towards him at the soft hiss of his helm lifting away. A hand reached for his face, and her fingers passed briefly through his cheek before settling correctly.

“Is that not the point, ki aki? That we lean on each other in equal measure when we need to?”

Her thumb brushed his cheek before she moved towards her desk, painfully slow as lead weight found its way into her bones. Her free hand extended reaching into shadows and pulling Wraithspire into existence, the staff clunking heavily on the durasteel floor as she stopped walking and closed her eyes, his question about how she felt going unanswered.

Not because she didn’t have one, but because she did not want to tell him the truth of it. She did not want to see the worry in his face when she explained how sleep brought no respite, how every return brought on more and more pain. How every trip beyond this room required more energy to be placed into the rune that had been temporary for far too long.

“It is getting worse,” she said finally reaching the desk, she turned to lean against it, pulling the handkerchief away from her nose, wincing as fresh pain lanced through her skull and something warm ran down her cheek, carving a crimson path over pale skin.
