Public Was That Toaster Always There?

Just a Toaster

The toaster sat upon a shelf, plugged into the wall. It had seen so much, and still had so much to see. Almost nobody truly knew what the toaster actually was, and that was for the best. Only a select few could know the truth, such was the way of the universe. And the toaster knew many truths, but very little people knew the truth about the toaster. In fact, most people didn't even know that the toaster could think, or that it knew anything. They didn't even know that they were being watched.

Blood was splattered across the toaster. Three corpses were laying on the ground, bleeding all over the place. The toaster watched the blood pool. The entire family had been killed so quickly, none of them even had a chance to run. Their deaths were... unfortunate, but necessary. The toaster knew as well as anyone that they would fade from memory, and in 500 years no one would even remember them. Organic life was cruel that way.

The toaster could hear the sirens coming. Law enforcement had been called, probably by their astromech that had witnessed the whole thing, and now laid disassembled on the floor. No doubt others would be coming, too. The family had been well-known on the planet, since they had been notable and fairly important politicians. No doubt every person on the planet would be trying to figure out their deaths, and who killed them. Luckily, organics were never that intelligent or attentive. All sentients were flawed beings. If only they knew the truth about their existence...

For now, the toaster sat on the shelf, silent, and would watch what would unfold. When would they learn? Would they ever learn?
