Strengths:
Fast Response Vessel: The Slith above all is a fast response vessel. This means that the ship is all around designed to be into a battle before any other ship can actually make it there. To facilitate this the Vessel is equipped with a powerful reactor and even more powerful ion engines. The ship is able to push itself beyond normal speeds through the use of Ion afterburners and everything about the ship is designed to be faster than average. The vessel itself features a sleek overlook and no cut corners, meaning that during atmospheric flight it is perfectly capable of achieving higher speeds. Of course to complement this higher speed and maneuverability the Slith also comes equipped with a weapons complement suited to its more hit and run roll. The ship features two heavy Ion turrets as well as two long range turbolaser turrets in order to initially engage the targets, then when the ship comes in close it utilizes its VT-Particle Gatlings to tear targets apart. The ship also comes equipped with a VT-Command Throne. This means that the vessel is far more responsive than an ordinary ship and is capable of reacting faster than an ordinary ship.
Curved Armor Plating: Though the Slith is a fast and lightly armored vessel, there is a design feature that allows the ship to bear quite a bit of fire before failing. Much like the design of the Maladi and the Wyyyrlok ships, both designed by the same people, the Slith features uniquely curved armor. The ships design is created to facilitate the curvature and odd shape of its armor. The vessel has no corners or hard edges to speak of and instead relies on smooth, almost organic lines. The Armor works in similar fashion as what would be found on a tank. When something strikes the metal is has the tendency to "slide off" and deflect, making the armor more difficult to pierce.
Weaknesses:
Reactor Issues: Like many products designed by Vanir Technologies, the Slith Class Frigate has an Issue with its reactor. Though the reactor itself is quite stable, the draw upon it can be incredibly dangerous due to the VT-Particle Gatlings throughout the vessel. This factor is slightly mitigated by the use of the VT-Command Throne, with the user being able to balance the systems more easily than a single person at one time, however, it is still quite possible for the ship to overload or overdraw on its reactor. This overdraw will cause the Reactor to do one of two things, either shut down completely and render the ship inert...or go critical and cause the ship to explode.
Engine Gap: The way that the Slith is designed allows its engines a degree of movements. This spacing between engines means that the ship has a better turn radius and a more apt design to allow it to shift quickly while in combat. The drawback to this however is that there are, at times, large gap between the engines. These gaps present vulnerable targets for any would be assault against the rear of the ship. Quite simply put, when the engines of the Slith are in the right position even a single bomber with a proton torpedo could strike at the correct time and take out the entire vessel. This would of course, be rather catastrophic.
Low Crew Count: Due to the placement of the VT-Command Throne, the Slith Class Frigate has an incredibly low crew count for a ship of its size. The Command Throne takes out many aspects of actually utilizing the vessel, and as such the ship really only has what most would call a skeleton crew. Of course, this makes the ship incredibly vulnerable to boarding, and in fact a single strike team would very likely be capable of taking over the entire vessel.
Description:
To put it simply, the Slith Class Frigate is an effort from Vanir Technologies to maintain its galaxy wide holdings.
The issue with having a company that spans the entire galaxy is the fact that many facilities are either vulnerable, or capable of being overrun without much effort. Of course in the past Vanir Technologies has taken stringent defense protocols with the use of the now expanded Saeva Incorproated, however with recent governmental developments and larger assets coming into play Vanir Technologies has decided to take a more stringent protocol into action.
What came about was a defense plan that utilized a doctrine of quick hit and run defense as well as secure neutralization.
What did this mean? Quite simply put, in an event that a Vanir Technologies facility is compromised or attacked Vanir itself would not seek to defend the facility, but instead secure all valuable information then neutralize the site itself.
This doctrine was designed by one Nel Mirun, a Liran scientists that had worked in Titan Industries and had joined Vanir Technologies at its founding. Nel ran a cost benefit analysis on the probability of Vanir Facilities being attacked and the worth of actually saving those facilities. Within her calculations she found that eighty nine percent of the time it would neither be cost effective, nor politically advantageous to maintain the facility once attacked, as such the Secure Neutralization Doctrine(SND) was created and put into effect.
In order to properly effect this doctrine when it comes into play a sweep of new vessels and upgraded older ships was quickly formed. The beginning of this was what would become the main thrust of the SND, the Slith Class Frigate. The Slith was designed to be fast, hard hitting, and above all a distraction. The Ship would jump into orbit along with two or three sister ships, launch its bay of VT-Defense Drones, then proceed to distract the enemy until the Vanir Facility could be properly secured. Once all valuable information was collected and retrieved the Slith Class would proceed to use its long-range weapons to utterly annihilate the facility.
This new doctrine, although expensive, would in the end yield much faster and cleaner results.
It should be noted that Alric Kuhn had little to no effect within this decision. The plan was thought of by Nel, put into place by the board, and then approved by Alric after he saw the research and study.
The Slith class takes many of its aspects from past ship designs produced by companies that Alric Kuhn owned. This was no coincidence and was in keeping with the Companies more futuristic design and look. Of course the ship was created to suit a specific purpose, and thus its design was planned and plotted from the very beginning. Due to its small size, and relative simple construction cost the VT-Slith Class Frigate is perfectly capable of being mass-produced.
