PRODUCTION INFORMATION

Manufacturer: Vrotoa Industries / Visanj T’shkali
Affiliation: Closed-Market
Model: Crystal Memory System
Modularity: Yes, contents can be changed.
Production: Mass-Produced
Material: Synthetic Fused Quartz Crystals, embedded with gold nanoparticles; Gabonna Memory Crystal processors.

SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Allows for massive amounts of data to be safely stored for billions of years in small crystalline structures which can read using a special laser optical microscope and polarizer. In turn, a single crystal can hold roughly 360TB*.
  • Enables vast amounts of data to be stored in very small spaces, saving much-need space aboard starships, vehicles, armor systems, computers, etc. for other purposes.
STRENGTHS:
  • Enables an incredible amount of information to be stored safely, without content deterioration, for centuries on a small device or devices, freeing up valuable space for other systems / uses.
  • Uses terrifically fast Gabonna processing to sort, search, analyze, and compile data in fractions of the times needed by less advanced systems.
  • Crystal storage is resilient against a wide array of damage, making them impervious to EMP/Ion, waterproof, and resistant to shock and other kinds of damage.
WEAKNESSES:
  • Without a special optical microscope and polarizer, the information cannot be read. Any computer without this module will be unable to access stored information.
  • Crystals, while resilient, can still be damaged through exceptional kinetic attacks, extreme heat, and intentional damage (as by a close-range high-powered blaster’s continuous fire or direct assault with a lightsaber.)
DESCRIPTION
Vrotoa Industries, as it entered into the making of synthetic gemstones and crystals, sought to help to develop 5-Dimensional Optical Data Storage technologies. Synthesizing fused quartz crystals, a largely inexpensive and relatively easy process, and embedding this material with nanoparticles of gold to exploit plasmonic properties, its researchers developed a powerful and lasting data storage technology that allowed incredibly vast amounts of information, including holo-images, video, and more, to compressed and stored on small crystals. This technology has, of course, been around for a very long time, but Vrotoa’s R & D took just one step further, arranging these crystals in lattice structures, and using special bonding and sealing agents, they were able to produce very high quality memory systems which could read in fractions of a second, allowing a computer to access terrific amounts of information almost instantly. Imagine walking into a library, say the size of a wing of the old Jedi Archives, and being able to review, cross-check, compare and contrast, and analyze all of the information contained there in just a few moments’ time! That is what the Vrotoa Crystal Memory System does, using the processing power of synthetic Gabonna Memory Crystals in tandem with the 5-D optical storage lattice. Now, using this technology, a galaxy of information can be compressed into an area the size of a small square building only a few stories tall, and reviewed in minutes! Using this technology, a ship captain can consult a whole inventory of navigation information including hyperspace routes, local histories, etc. in mere moments, and more, so can her navicomputer. A ship’s engineer can comb through thirty years’ tech manuals and maintenance records to diagnose and solve a problem in seconds. A tactical officer will have centuries of tactics and strategies, as well as information on enemy weapons systems, shields, etc. at her fingertips and her battle computers can analyze them in minutes to calculate new strategy on the fly in the midst of battle.

Vrotoa Industries includes the Vrotoa Crystal Memory Reader / Writer Module, easily installed into any computer system, together with writable crystals.

*According to one estimate, the amount of data contained in the U.S. Library of Congress is equal to roughly 3 Petabytes, or 3,000TB; this means the entire LOC, and then some, could be stored on just three of these crystals!
