"Vane's first instinct is self-preservation. I do not mean cowardice. She tolerates discomfort, pain and considerable personal risk when she believes the outcome warrants it. What she does not tolerate well is helplessness.
She prefers to have an exit. When one is unavailable, she creates one. This appears to extend beyond her criminal behavior and into most aspects of her life. Money, information, useful acquaintances and technical skill all provide some measure of independence, and Vane places considerable value on anything that makes her less dependent upon someone else's goodwill.
She has attempted to intimidate staff on several occasions. I do not consider these incidents indicative of an immediate threat. Vane is quite capable of violence, but she does not appear particularly interested in it for its own sake. Her threats are calculated. Once she believes the other party understands what she is capable of, the behavior usually stops.
She is neither without empathy nor incapable of attachment. Quite the opposite. She reads others exceptionally well and appears genuinely affected by those she allows close to her. This may explain why she keeps that number relatively small. Vulnerability is something Vane recognizes easily in others and resents fiercely in herself.
I would expect her to lie, steal, manipulate or become violent if she believed it necessary to protect herself or someone she considers her own. I would not expect her to do any of those things without a reason.
There is something she is withholding. I cannot determine what, and I do not believe identifying it is necessary to assess her present risk.
