Very fast, very dangerous…

Tejori Lotor

Only the bright future lays ahead...

As she entered the hangar, she shivered with excitement. The place was teeming with the droids and crews of all the great podracers of Tash-Taral. The pilots themselves were milling about, testing equipment. All the main contenders. Then the second-raters. Then Tejori. In her day she was a decent pod-racer. But that was seven years ago. Aged ten she’d won her fair share of races for Maggot. But then he’d tired of the sport and found his illegal activities more fruitful and a greater adrenaline rush.

She had just enough time to check the linkage cables, lube the engines, and test the thrusters before the lineup call blared over the loudspeakers. She guided her Podracer slowly out of the hangar and towards the Grand Arena.

When she said her podracer, she meant Maggot’s.

She needed the credits to but some parts for the ship she was pulling together and almost a year after starting, was no further forwards in finding some key components. Only credits could help her now. And Maggot’s podracer. She didn’t expect him to miss it. It was covered in an old tarpaulin at the back of a garage. So she’d sneaked in one night, swapped boxes for the machine and spent her time renovating it. He wouldn’t miss it. She was sure of it. And what if he did? She’d run out on his gang three long years ago. He wouldn’t still want to kill her. Would he?

As she entered the arena, the crowd noise hit her like a sandstorm. The arena announcer was exciting the crowd in two languages.

“We have perfect weather today for the big race, the most hazardous of all pod-races on Tash-Taral."

‘And the one with the biggest prize money,’ she reminded herself.

After lining up at the start, the pilots stepped out of their podracers and the crowd cheered wildly. A band played a fanfare and Tejori jumped into her seat. The people in the stands were stomping their feet. Crew members shouted last-minute urgent instructions, frightened eopies honked, and Tejori simply wished it was all over.

She strapped on her goggles. She flipped on her power-coupling activation switch. The ooupllng engines roared as the energy binders shot lie tween the two rear capsules. All around the arena, the sound of revving podracers filled the air.

Above the track on a metal bridge, a large light glowed red. The flaggers, who'd been standing under the bridge, now moved off.

Three laps. Three long laps. She'd have to keep her enthusiasm in check, keep enough back for a killer final kick.

"START YOUR ENGINES!" commanded the starter.

As the main engines ignited with a thunderous boom, all eyes focused on the lights — that turned green. Tejori jammed the accelerator and the engine screamed.

She felt herself being lifted high in the air. She saw a blur of faces — tan, brown, blue, green, mottled, smooth — creatures from all over the galaxy no doubt, smiling with admiration and recognition.

As she circled around on a sea of shoulders, Tejori spotted one cross face hovering above the others - Maggot's.
