Private Velvet Odds and False Promises

“The Gilded Ghost”

Canto Bight never truly became dark. Evening simply taught it how to glitter differently. The sun had long since slipped beneath the Cantonica horizon, but the city only seemed to sharpen after dusk—its towers awash in jewel-toned light, its terraces spilling music, laughter, and carefully curated excess into the warm night air. Wealth moved here not in credits but in spectacle. It shimmered from chandeliers and champagne fountains, from gowns slit too high and cufflinks cut from kyber crystal, from the practiced boredom of beings who had spent too much of their lives never hearing the word no.

Perfect hunting grounds. Daesha Kairn moved through the grand casino floor like she had been born to it. In truth, that was always the trick. One did not need to possess legitimacy when one could wear it better than the legitimate ever managed.

Her dress was a study in expensive understatement—exactly the kind of thing that made the obscenely rich glance twice because it refused to beg for attention. Midnight black silk clung close through the torso before loosening at the hips into a flowing asymmetric fall that bared one long leg whenever she walked. Fine metallic threading, nearly invisible except when it caught the casino lights, ran through the fabric in lines reminiscent of star charts. The neckline dipped low without becoming vulgar, framed by a collar of linked platinum crescents that rested against sun-bronzed skin like deliberate armor. One shoulder remained bare while the other disappeared beneath a sheer charcoal drape attached at the wrist, giving every gesture the illusion of theatrical flourish.

Her lekku were adorned rather than hidden—banded near the base with slim platinum rings and draped with two whisper-thin chains that caught against the low light whenever she turned her head, an indulgent detail that spoke of vanity and money in equal measure.

Jewelry elsewhere was sparse. Which meant it was genuine. A pair of elongated auric drop earrings hooked delicately from the lobes. Three rings, each understated and costly enough to fund a small moon's municipal budget. No visible blaster. No obvious knife. Because Zara didn’t carry those things often and the truly dangerous rarely advertised.

Her lips carried the faintest wine-red sheen. Her perfume was subtle—warm amber, smoke, and something floral enough to linger in memory without ever becoming identifiable.

Merchant royalty. Investor. Widow. Socialite. Tonight's version of Zara Voss wore all of them beneath the name Daesha Kairn. Tomorrow night she would host a private gala in one of Canto Bight's absurd skyview estates where several bored industrialists, two Hutt-affiliated financiers, and one Core shipping magnate would be introduced to the investment opportunity of a lifetime: an exclusive fleet of handcrafted luxury yachts supposedly commissioned through a hidden Mon Calamari artisan consortium.

The yachts did not exist. The forged documentation did. The holo-models did. The shell companies certainly did. And when anyone realized they had purchased vapor wrapped in prestige, Daesha Kairn had already created her scapegoat.

But a successful fraud of that scale required momentum. Momentum required visibility. Visibility required tonight. A few wins. A few introductions. A few high-profile conversations overheard by exactly the right ears. She drifted past spinning sabacc wheels and card tables with a saunter just slow enough to invite notice. Men looked. Women looked longer. Dealers recognized money whether it was real or not and offered that faint extra degree of respect reserved for someone presumed ruinously wealthy.

Daesha gave them all a smile sharpened by private amusement. Then she saw him. Not because she knew his face. She didn't. But she knew that expression with intimate familiarity. The set jaw pretending indifference. The shoulders held a fraction too tight. The subtle irritation in the fingers when another hand turned poorly. A gambler trying to perform control while luck quietly throttled him.

Ah. Losing men were useful. Losing men with enough pride to keep sitting were often desperate. Desperate people could be redirected. Could be baited. Could be bought with the promise that the next hand would be different if only they trusted the right stranger.

Her gaze lingered on the table a moment longer as she approached, cataloguing players, dealer rhythm, chip stacks, emotional tells. By the time she reached it she already knew enough to know the game was ripe for interruption. Daesha rested one hand lightly on the back of an empty chair and let her attention settle first on the man beside it—Shoan, though she did not yet know the name.

Close enough now, she could appreciate the finer details beneath the frustration. Handsome in the rough-edged sort of way that suggested he had seen more practical worlds than this one. Not born to Canto Bight silk and polished smiles. Better. Those were the ones easiest to tempt because they never quite trusted that rooms like this belonged to them.

She let her smile curve. Warm. Interested. Just enough danger to make it memorable. "Tell me," she said, voice low and smooth as aged brandy, "is this seat cursed, or have you simply been saving all the table's bad luck for my arrival?"

Without waiting for permission from anyone but him, she slid her fingers over the chair and leaned in slightly, dark eyes lifting to meet his. "Because if it's the former, I adore a challenge..." Her gaze flicked briefly to his dwindling stack and back again, lips curling. "...and if it's the latter, perhaps I should sit close. Misery tends to be more profitable when shared."

She tilted her head, playful, appraising. "May I?"
