Intent: (Example: 'A personal weapon for Darth Scabious' or 'an advanced armored personnel carrier for the Republic')

Development Thread: (The main way people work for their toys, though most submissions don't require a development thread. Restricted items require specific development threads. Substantial development threads can help judges approve more powerful submissions. If in doubt, put 'If necessary,' and a judge may or may not ask you for one.)

Manufacturer: (Kuat Drive Yards, BlasTech Industries, [Character Name], etc.)

Model: (Example: E-11 Blaster Rifle. For submissions where a model wouldn't be appropriate, such as a custom walking stick, put 'N/A' for 'Not Applicable'.)

Do you have ideas for changes/additions to this template, maybe preset templates for various types of vehicles (i.e; tanks)? Throw them down here, I'm putting this in the FJ discussion to follow in-line with the current viewpoint on a 'united front' and not seem scatter-brained.

Current Ideas:
  • Rather than comparing vehicles to X-wing starfighters (which really doesn't make sense when you think about it) make 1 squadron 10 vehicles with a length of 10 meters per vehicle to a total of 100 meters. (X-wings are 12.5 meters long, and 12 of them equates to 1 squadron). So 1 Squadron = 10 vehicles @ 10 meters each. This will then make a decimal system based on this much easier.
  • Split categories based on propulsion, i.e; Wheels, Quadrupeds, Bipeds, Repulsorlift, etc. We can get by the exclusivity of templates based on this, as most all of vehicles that run on repulsorlifts have the same base principle and so on with other similar vehicles.

About 1/3 of the way done with the above templates, if anyone has any input on this I would love some opinions on this. So far changes done were streamlining of squadron sizes to make decimal-based units of measure (can remove of if this isn't a good idea), specified top speeds for each vehicle type (except misc. vehicles, which are the fringe of vehicles, like rocket cars and the like) based on the maximum known speed for each type of vehicle (if you know of higher speeds I will adjust those, or you can suggest another top speed if you'd like). And added a "How many x does this have" field, basically how many tracks does this tank have, or how many wheels does this jeep have, or how many legs does this walker have with a minimum for the vehicles that this option was presented to.

Each subclass to have a cookie cutter template the user can copy and paste and modify (also saves time deleting the descriptions)
Some examples of each class
Some additional fields: altitude for speeders, depth for submersible

Well... Aquatic Vehicles should have their own section, instead of being lumped into Misc Vehicles.

Other than that... I'm not seeing much variation between the templates that would justify having multiple individual templates instead of a single catch-all template.

For the Starship Templates, most ships have the same template. However, they are separated by size and have specific examples of ships in that size range and the length/width/height of those ships.
Each ship category, based on size, has its own armament rating and has links to examples for 'standard' loadouts. As well as having a specific limitation to squadron capacity.
Each Template provides about 20 links to various helpful sources to help writers research a specific section of the template before coming up with their own numbers.
And then we have the separate, stand alone image that we use as a guideline for determining appropriate speed and maneuverability for each ship class.

For the Technology Templates, there is much less overall information to go through... but the natural differences between a gun and a sword or a suit of armor produces some very different and specific templates that do exactly what they need to do for the Technology Factory.

So... Looking at this... The first thing I'd want to see, but I don't, is that there is no links provided. A list of a couple materials is nice, as is telling someone that Durasteel or Alusteel is a common metal to use and glasteel or transparisteel is a common glass to use, but I'd want this section to contain a few links to a wider selection of appropriate materials to use.

Next thing I'd look for, but am not seeing, is a list of examples for the Height, Length, Width, and Weight of any vehicle. Providing a link to an example of the high end, low end, and average example of a given vehicle goes a long ways towards helping submitters understand what is considered acceptable.

While the minimum and optimal crew would seem like a -duh- thing to any of us, it would probably be helpful to include a quick example in here as well. Such as how a Sherman Tank would require a minimum crew of a Driver and a Gunner to operate at all, but that a fully functional crew would consist of a Driver, Co-Driver, Gunner, Loader, and Commander.

You provide a speed limit for a vehicle using a specific type of locomotion. But a speeder-bike and a 90-ton hover-tank are going to have a very different acceptable top speed. This should probably be reflected in the template.

Many people feel that the Armament section of a vehicle or starship submission is the most important. From what I hear, a submission with a too-large armament is more likely to hear complaints than a vehicle that goes too fast, carries too much, or comes in too large of a squadron. So, you'd probably want the Armament section to be a little more detailed. Such as; What's an appropriate primary weapon for a tank? What are some appropriate anti-infantry weapons? Is there a limit to what I can put on my vehicle? Can I put a Turbolaser on a Speeder Bike?

Speaking of Squadron count... The Squadron Count question makes no sense. It sounds like you're trying to say that a 3-meter long vehicle would have a squadron count of 3 and anything larger than 10 meters must have a squadron count of 1. How about just giving some examples? Tanks typically come in squadrons of 3-5 with a Company of tanks being 12-15 vehicles. Infantry come in squads of 10-12, Platoons of 50-60, and Companies of 100-500. Using these two lists as an example, (3-5 Tanks in a Squadrons and 50-60 Infantry in a Platoon) what size squadron would your vehicle come in?

Also. You can separate this further. Typically... You get Heavy, Medium, and Light/Recon vehicles. A Heavy Tank is going to come in a squadron of 1-3 depending on how big it is. A Medium Tank is going to come in a squadron of 3-5. Though, this typically has as much to do with doctrine than anything else. 3 squadrons of 5 tanks and five squadrons of three tanks both make a Company of 15 vehicles. And smaller vehicles come in even larger squadrons. A 'car' type vehicle is going to come in larger squadrons than a tank, and a speeder-bike is going to come in... pretty much the largest squadron acceptable for a vehicle submission.

On the whole though.... I really don't see any difference between the currently used "catch all" template and what you've got going on here other than listing a minimum number of wheels, tracks, and legs for a given vehicle and listing a maximum speed for a type of locomotion. I understand that you're saying you're only 1/3rd done... But this initial view leads me to believe that we should not be classifying vehicles based on their chosen means of locomotion. If we want sub-classes of vehicles, that's perfectly fine and I'd support that. But I think that the type of locomotion should be a sub-class for a specific size-range of vehicles, and not the other way around.

Why?

Because if I'm submitting a Bike... I should use a template specifically designed for a bike, not one specifically designed for wheels, tracks, repulsors, or legs.
I can make a bike-like vehicle that uses legs just as easily as I could make one that uses tracks or wheels. I could even make an aquatic bike.

So... Here's my alternate proposal. Why don't we instead take the limit on legs, tracks, wheels, and top speed that you've come up with for these templates, and work them into a more specific list of templates that's based on the type of vehicle being submitted?

  • Bike
  • Car/Speeder
  • Light Armored Vehicle (Tank, APC, Artillery Platform, Armored Car, exc)
  • Medium Armored Vehicle (Tank, APC, Artillery Platform, exc)
  • Heavy Armored Vehicle (Tank, APC, Artillery Platform, exc)
  • Mobile Fortress
  • Submersible Vehicle

Notes on Submersible Vehicles: They are only for use on vehicles designed primarily to operate under the water, and not for vehicles "capable of being submerged". Additionally, I don't think that 'surface vehicles' should be tossed into this category. A Jet Ski would be a Bike, a Speed Boat would be a Speeder, a "Battleship" would be a Mobile Fortress, and everything between would be some form of Armored vehicle. Only honest to god submarines belong in the Submersible Vehicle category.

Why not have the submersible vehicle be less a separate template and more of an overlay template? Or an add on, as you will. You can make a submersible of nearly anything on there in the star wars universe, so arguably you could theoretically tack it on at the end of the standard template to expand on the submersible quality.

Again, I really like the notion of having a cookie cutter example template for each sub class. Shows what's acceptable and also makes it easy to make a submission for a typical vehicle.

I've started compiling some examples in the Google doc, I'll put some links in there in BB code.

There are two ways to cut the cake, i'd prefer Silara's with light medium and heavy (etc) types being a sub class

By 1/3 i mean there is a skeleton template to be chnaged and updated, this is not a finished product.

[member="War Hydra"]
The squadron counts would be 10 count if the vehicle is ten meters, meaning a 3 meter sub would have roughly 3 times as many, rather than going by 12.5 meters.

Totally forgot about submersibles, as well as boats, so ill add that in. Links and such are the last thing ill add to this once everything is compiled and up to par.

Is it worth adding any justification for squadron size?

Surely it's more of an organisational thing.

There are often more main battle tanks in a squadron that there are light platforms in a mounted recon squadron?

Squadrons are the units of measure generally used in invasions and other deployments in role-play, more advanced/elite/heavy vehicles get limited with smaller squadron sizes. It also stands to reason that a 30 meter vehicle will be deployed in smaller numbers that speeder bikes.

[member="Lily Kirsche Kuhn"]

I think it'd be nice if we could set a maximum somewhere to use as an example. Like... 50 speeder biker in a squadron or something. compared to say... 25 ground speeders to a squadron... 3-5 tanks to a squadron...

A heavy armoured vehicle will typically have three crew. Commander, tank, gunner. However SW precedent >> real life precedent.

Are you ok with me going and compiling an example list for the templates? [member="Lily Kirsche Kuhn"]

What about a main gun rating for light to heavy armour?

Star wars canon is a bit light on differentiating types of laser cannons. Whilst the tank nuts may love quoting calibres and real world precedent it could be simpler.

Out of 20. 5 for a canon or heavy repeater on a recon type, 10 for the cannons on IFVs and light tanks that can threaten heavy armour, 15 for main battle tank guns, 20 for a massive gun on a super Walker.

Might actually just be a complication. Maybe defense/armament ratings but with the range covering all vehicle sizes.

Actually seeing this worked up makes think that this just feels right.

Lets see... Mobile fortresses should probably have an average squadron count of 1 to a squadron.

Oh! And weight. Weight is an odd area. For example, the Primeval have a light APC that weighs 14 tons and carries 6 infantry. At first, I had thoughts it was a simple Bradley analog. But when I looked up the Bradley, that vehicle weights 28 tons. So... Popo and I were debating if how durable the actual vehicle would be if it's only got 14 tons of metal, engines, and armor.

I think a guide for appropriate tonnage for vehicles would be good. Because most people are fairly clueless.
How much does an Armored Humvee weigh? Is a good question to know the answer to if you are making a "Warthog" type vehicle.
How much does a Sherman weigh? Is a good question to know if you're making a Light Tank.

[member="Raziel"]

Are you proposing an Armament Rating for vehicles?

I think we could make a list of appropriate "Main Cannon" sort of weapons. Not as much as a "pick one of these and only these", but as a basis of comparison.
And include in that guide what size vehicle that weapon is appropriate on. Like... No Proton Cannons on a 15-ton light tank.
Or something.

Tis not a bad idea

Something like (light/medium/heavy - and yes it needs some extras for missile launchers/smoke grenade launchers etc)

Armaments: (What weapons and defenses are mounted on the vehicle? Vehicles of this size should have limited armaments, such as A Heavy or Repeating Blaster)

Armaments: (What weapons and defenses are mounted on the vehicle? Vehicles of this size should have limited armaments, such as 1 Laser Cannon)

Armaments: (What weapons and defenses are mounted on the vehicle? Vehicles of this size should have limited armaments, such as 1 Heavy Laser Cannon or equivalent (e.g. Mass Driver) and 2 other light turrets.)

To note, I haven't gotten to heavy craft just yet (I've only managed to copy/paste from the medium to heavy and get somewhat started on it).

Also, feel free to edit my post (the new rough draft) so long as you leave an edit note to explain what was added/removed/changed/etc.
