SPECIAL FEATURES
Strengths:
  • Silent while underwater due to air-independent propulsion
  • Heavy firepower under the form of proton rockets
  • Heavy defenses
Weaknesses:
  • Limited ammunition: if the ordnance magazines are exhausted, the craft is vulnerable
  • If the missile magazines are penetrated, the submarine can be killed
  • Slow, ponderous
  • Large broadside target
  • Low cargo capacity
Description: It was found that the predecessor of the Varindar, named after Varindar Asyt, the Deliria, was too large for the level of combat capability the Silver Jedi wanted out of an attack submarine. Weight savings were made by reducing the thickness of the hulls, and thereby the size of the ballasts, which have the side effect of reducing the defenses the submarine has to defend against projectiles, mines and other weapons susceptible to hit it. By doing so, the tonnage of the submarine was cut nearly in half, with very little reduction in the pressure hull size, and allowing the squadron size to be increased from 2 to 4. However, some of the weight savings were applied to soundproofing, resulting in no real increases in speed or to maneuverability, with the central mast playing host to not only sensor and communications, but also electronic warfare. And the problem of the ordnance magazines were not resolved: their size could not be increased, and they still suffer from potentially destroying the submarine if the ordnance magazines are penetrated while there is still ordnance in it. The proton rocket tubes have been somewhat modified to handle a variety of ordnance up to the size of proton rockets as well, hence retaining the capability of hitting other submarines, aquatic vehicles and even coastal targets.

The guns were replaced by eight quad-lasers modified for underwater use since it was found that the original guns were unusable underwater. Also, an anti-aircraft version, suggested by stoners and hence is colloquially known as the Rasta Sub subclass, have all the proton rocket flex-tubes replaced by standard flex-tubes capable of firing proton torpedoes, concussion missiles or other ordnance of equivalent size, and feature 8 VLS of that size, alongside two each forward and aft.
