Wandering Wolf
Location: Coruscant
A faint smirk pulled at the corner of Ace's mouth at Arris's lawyer comment. It wasn't amused so much as knowingly sardonic, like she had accidentally proven his point for him without realizing it. Of course he was looking for loopholes. That was the difference between surviving systems and getting consumed by them.
When she brought up Mercy, though, the expression faded again. Ace barely restrained an eye roll, his gaze drifting off for a second before settling back on her. He wasn't worried about Mercy. Not at all. But he already had enough moving pieces pressing in from every direction without adding more pressure from the top of the Covenant's food chain.
"Vestra's death raised the bar, huh?" His eyes narrowed slightly on Arris as he said it. "Hate to see what she's got you doing then." A beat passed. "Considering it's your fault."
The comment carried the same dry edge as most things he said to her, but it wasn't entirely a jab. Beneath it, Ace understood what this actually was. Arris wasn't posturing or trying to intimidate them for the sake of it. She was preparing them. Warning them in the only way she knew how. Honestly, he was a little surprised she cared enough to bother. If that was even the right word for it.
He finally turned toward the opening blast doors and started walking, leaving a short while after Varin. The warehouse doors groaned wider, opening back out into the endless industrial arteries of Coruscant.
Ahead of him, Varin spoke again, quieter this time. Ace caught only part of it as he followed him out. Something about home. About serving as an example.
His brow lifted slightly. For a brief second, Ace thought Varin was talking to himself. He didn't comment on it, but the look lingered a moment longer before he continued forward into the corridor beyond.
