STRENGTHS
  • Dynamic Passive Camouflage: A rather perculiar trait of the Unseen Guardian-series energy shield is that it makes it possible for dynamic "Passive Camouflage" the deuterium particles can be packed so densely that it can inhibit the contact of Photons and other Electromagnetic waves with the protected object. The protected object quite literally becomes a "Black Body" to radiation and turns to a virtually lightless Onyx black silhouette. This has the added benefit of making the protected object dramatically more difficult to detect the object using electromagnetic sensors and waves. However in doing so the protected object is also subjected to the Faraday Cage effect which is undesirable as it's equally difficult for Electromagnetic waves to escape as penetrate the Guardian energy shield.
  • Environmental Insulate: Unseen Guardian energy shields generate a transparent wall of malleable densely packed deuterium particles around the protected object this permits for some interesting behaviour. The Deuterium is do dense it can protect and insulate the user against atomic and sub-atomic particles this confers protection to all manner of threat including but not limited to: Biological, Chemical and Radiological contaminants in the environment isolating the wearer from their environment. This is particularly useful when applied to void warfare or personal armor where a breach in the environment's atmosphere exposing it to the vacuum of space does not necessarily guarantee death as the shield isolates the wearer from it.
  • Melee Shield: An additional benefit of the Unseen Guardian's behavior is that it protects even against melee weapons effectively, alteast against simple unpowered weapons and vibroweapons. These types of melee weapons tend to be completely ineffective against the Energy Shield, the weapon is usually destroyed as the wielder's effort applied against the shield causes it to superheat and be vaporized into a plasma and leaving the protected target undamaged. This doesn't apply to weapons that emit strong electromagnetic fields like lightsabers and electro-plasma weapons can slice straight through the energy shield without much in the way of resistance.
  • Plasma-based energy shield: The Unseen Guardian energy shield utilizes a malleable field of charged deuterium particles projected by the emitters and shaped by an artificially generated magnetic field to create a dense veil or veneer of transparent deuterium particles around the protected object, the charged deuterium particles act almost like an invisible web and interact with any object regardless of its' velocity that comes into contact with the transparent plasma field heating it in direct proportion to the force applied to the field. So for example a bullet moving at several hundred meters per second will be superheated and destroyed against the shield due to the resultant friction generated when coming into contact with the plasma field vaporizing said projectile into a plasma and the magnetic field safely carries this plasma harmlessly away from the user due to the centripetal and centrifugal force generated by the magnetic field's behavior. This allows the shield to function in almost any environment including the vacuum of space.
WEAKNESSES
  • Confined Spaces: When applied to personal armor there is a serious challenge posed by confined spaces as the shield's constant contact with the terrain at low velocities can lead to the energy shield's bonds being weakened eroding its' integrity and leaving the wearer increasingly vulnerable. Additionally, it reduces the armor and wearer's mobility in close-quarters as the energy shield will be generating friction against contact surfaces with movement. A user of the technology could elect to disable certain emitters to stop the unintended or unwanted contact with the environment.
  • Faraday Cage Effect: The shield is capable of increasing its' deuterium density to the point where photons and electromagnetic waves struggle to penetrate the protective shield while this increases its' effectiveness at face value it comes at a steep cost. Electromagnetic waves and photons cannot leave the energy shield so taking advantage of the functionality to increase the shield's deuterium density results in the wearer not being able to take advantage of wireless communication technology or if they can the capability is dramatically diminished and a stable signal may not be able to be maintained beyond a few dozen meters at most.
  • Strong magnetic fields: Formidable, strong magnetic fields are capable of disrupting the cohesion and movement of the charged deuterium particles in the energy shield. This is best demonstrated by Ion weapons, electromagnetic pulse grenades which are very effective against the energy shield and knocking the charged deuterium particles from their orbit shearing away in streaks of plasma. This disrupts the shield's cohesion and shape as the deuterium attempts to realign along the different emitter axis creating weaknesses in the energy shield.
  • Submerged environments: Unfortunately when the shield is submerged into a solution like water the shield fails to function correctly as the magnetic field's flow gets significantly inhibited from being submerged in the dense medium. The shield's constituent molecules are distributed in the solution aimlessly and the electromagnetic energy shield's field propagation is left utterly distorted and warped.

DESCRIPTION

The Unseen Guardian series of energy shields were originally designed and manufactured tens of thousands of year ago by the extra-galactic Gwerin Commonwealth Space Administration. The series of shields arrived in the galaxy simultaneously with the Commonwealth's arrival in approximately 26,000 BBY since then there has been incremental improvements made in the shield 's technology. While it might ostensibly appear to be a type of Deflector Shield the underlying principles and behavior of the Unseen Guardian series are fundamentally different from the more conventional shielding technology with corresponding strength and weaknesses.

Among the strengths is that unlike some other active shielding technology is that the shield interdicts all threats whether they be kinetic, directed energy, sonic, ionic etc. Melee weapons are also stopped and destroyed by the friction generated by the Unseen Guardian energy shield when anything makes contact with its' magnetically manipulated field of Deuterium molecules. However, as a result of its' unique behavior the functionality brings with it a number of quirks and distinct weaknesses. As it generates friction with any object that comes into contact with it the Unseen Guardian Energy Shield can react to contact when it's undesirable such as when a wearer of armor is in a confined space leaving their shield's cohesion weaker in those location if they do not elect to disable it.

For this reason when used in body armor the contact surfaces of the bottoms of the boots or feet and palms of hands are often programmed to be unshielded as the energy shield would react to weapons held by the wearer or slow them down when running due to generated friction. However sometimes this interdiction of even atomic or subatomic particles can be particularly useful such as when the wearer is operating in a biologically, chemically or radio-logically contaminated environment. The Energy Shield can allow a person wearing even light armor to be relatively safe in a thoroughly contaminated environment without necessitating body armor constructed from dense materials to stop energy released by radioactive isotopes.

Another feature of the energy shield is its' ability to dramatically increase the density of the Deuterium molecules in the magnetically-manipulated field around the wearer, which makes it extremely difficult for Photons and electromagnetic waves to make contact with the shielded object effectively reducing its' radar and lidar cross-section dramatically along with its' emissions on other sensor spectrum. However this feature tends to be a double-edged sword as the density of the Deuterium creates what is known as a "Faraday Cage Effect" Whereby electromagnetic waves and photon emissions cannot or struggle to escape this has two effects firstly it renders the protected object as a near lightless onyx black silhouette and secondly it prevents the protected object from sending electromagnetic signals which creates issues in terms of wireless communication most notably.

The shield's strength scales in direct proportion to the number of emitters and energy of the power source individual emitters can typically be turned off or programmed to prevent undesired contact with objects in the environment. So tracked tanks for example can modify their emitters' electromagnetic field and shape the shield so that the shield doesn't cover the tracks or wheels as these are moving parts and coming into direct contact with other surfaces which would generate friction.
