The Warden of Vaal
SPECIAL FEATURES
- Dual interchangeable tool mounts
- Reverse-jointed bipedal chassis
- Magnetic footing
- Industrial environmental sealing
- Phrik-reinforced mounting assemblies
- Highly Modular: A single UMD chassis can be configured for excavation, surveying, repair work, cargo transport, salvage operations, or infrastructure development through interchangeable tool packages.
- Built for Vaal: Designed to operate in rocky highlands, seasonal flooding, dust-heavy mines, and violent electrical storms. Environmental sealing, magnetic footing, and integrated grounding systems allow the platform to remain operational in conditions that quickly degrade conventional industrial machinery.
- Reliable Workhorse: The UMD prioritizes durability, ease of maintenance, and operational longevity. Most components can be serviced with common industrial tools, making the platform popular among remote settlements, mining camps, and infrastructure crews.
- Not a Combat Droid: The UMD was designed to work, not fight. Even armed configurations remain significantly less capable than dedicated military platforms.
- Vulnerable to Ionization: Like most industrial machinery, ion and EMP attacks can quickly disable critical systems.
- Tool Dependent: A mining configuration is not automatically suited for repair work, and a cargo configuration may struggle in excavation duties. Proper equipment selection remains critical to mission effectiveness.
- Slow and Deliberate: The chassis prioritizes stability, traction, and load-bearing capability over speed and agility.
- Reconfiguration Time: While highly modular, changing tool packages is not instantaneous. Swapping equipment typically requires dedicated maintenance time, limiting the UMD's ability to rapidly adapt during ongoing operations.
The Universal Mining Droid, more commonly known as the UMD, traces its roots to the difficult years following the Gulag Plague. Faced with labor shortages and the immense burden of rebuilding settlements, roads, utilities, and agricultural infrastructure, House Angelis began developing simple utility droids to assist reconstruction efforts across Vaal. These early machines were never intended for mining. They were practical work platforms designed to haul materials, repair damaged infrastructure, assist construction crews, and help communities recover from decades of hardship.
As reconstruction gave way to growth, the platform evolved alongside the planet itself. Builders adapted the design for construction projects. Farmers employed it to maintain equipment and move supplies. Surveyors carried it into the wilderness, while miners brought it into the mountains. House Angelis continued refining the chassis over successive generations, gradually developing the modular architecture that would become the hallmark of the platform. By the time industrial mining expanded across Vaal, the droid had already established a reputation for reliability, adaptability, and durability in some of the planet's harshest environments.
Modern UMDs produced by Adonis Angelis Industries represent the latest stage in that evolution. During the expansion of phrik extraction and industrial development across the planet, Adonis Angelis IV directed significant investment toward modernizing the platform. Rather than creating separate droids for every industrial task, AAI refined the UMD into a universal work machine capable of supporting excavation, repair, surveying, cargo transport, salvage operations, and infrastructure development through interchangeable tool packages.
