Landside
The very first settlement built on the planet. It contains one of the largest groups of Unitans left as many returned in the years after the war. It is primariliy made up of a large residential area laying on the beach but some of the buildings extend beyond into the sea. A small spaceport lays overrun by plant life on the outskirts, the spaceport once served to bring goods to the planet but since isolation it has been useless asides from as a squatting ground for the homeless. The most striking part of the town's landscape is a giant carving of Quarren Jedi Knight Surrax overlooking the city. Over the centuries storms have battered and eroded the cliffs but the locals have made the preservation of this landmark a top priority and it is a testament to their faith that it remains in-tact today. The Sith make occasional travels to Landside for a variety of reasons including but not limited to trading with the locals, recruiting sympathisers and cultural curiosity but it is outside their direct plans for the world.

Unity Central
Unity Central was designed by gungan architect Kap Kap Tarphes, hired by the Republic to help construct the capital city. This led to Unity Central having a design more reminiscent of gungan cities on Naboo than anything on Dac, something which provoked mixed responses among residents. It is connected to the surface by a long elevator which travels between Central's main district and an elevated landing pad on ocean level. Central has since declined rapidly seeing rioting and, critically, the final gruelling battle of Unity's Civil War. Entire districts of the city have broken off from the middle of the structure and sank beneath the waves. Yet Unity Central is not unlivable. Like Landside, residents returned in the years after the civil war albeit nowhere close to the population it used to house. Since their arrival, the Sith have mingled with residents and established an embassy and a science lab on the lower levels.

Klatha
Klatha was a large settlement on the planet's largest island which was abandoned by Unity's colonists due to problems with the deadly corydis fungus. The Sith, unconcerned by any long term repercussions on the planet's ecosystem, have since burned much of the jungle away to kill the fungus though it continues to prey on the careless. Klatha is now the Sith's main base of operations planet side and a vast industrial complex processing imported goods has been built. The settlement is guarded by a variety of state of the art defences including ray shields, ion canons and turbo lasers all specialised to fend off any ships should they somehow break through the orbital defences on the twin moons. On ground level the city is surrounded by electrified walls, automatic turrets and sentry towers manned by security droids and Sith troopers. At the centre of the city lies the renovated spaceport, the main supply chain for Sith forces on the ground. A huge structure the superstitious claim can be viewed from orbit. The Sith have turned this building into a fortress, heavily armoured and covered in both anti-air and anti-ground turrets.

Culture:
Culturally, Unity has regressed. Centuries of separation from each other have caused a variety of dialects and accents to appear. Different settlements have different methods of Government with republics and oligarchies most common. Synchronised swimming and coral painting are the most common forms of entertainment beneath the waves but some surface dwelling groups have rediscovered paper allowing different kinds of art and writing to take place. Religiously, the dark Jedi Slurrax has become a mythological figure to many. Pilgrims regularly travel to Landside where Slurrax's face is carved into the cliffside. This is the way most residents of Unity meet those from other settlements in their otherwise isolated lives.

Technology:
To the uneducated, the modern day planet appears backwards. Wood and stone form the majority of buildings and weaponry is simplistic. However this is due to lack of resources than development. Unity has none of the metals nor sources of energy needed for modern tech meaning anything better than rudimentary vehicles and blasters cannot be practically built. Some settlements have basic power from wind and wave energy but for the most part technology is at a tribal status, infuriating many who know how to technologically progress but cannot because of the dire lack of resources Unity offers. However opportunity has arrived with the presence of the Sith and off world materials have once again their way to Unity, time will tell if the natives themselves will be able to take advantage of their ending galactic isolation.

History:
"The Unity Project shall be the first joint Mon Calamari and Quarren co-operation there has ever been. Together our two great peoples shall explore the galactic fringe and show the galaxy the value of friendship over conflict"
- Cal Tuno, First and only official president of Unity
Conception
Project Unity was devised by the Old Galactic Republic and Government of Dac in 878 BBY. The planet Dac, home of both the Mon Calamari and Quarren species had entered a new era in relations between the two sentient species. The Quarrens, typically conservative and mistrustful of outsiders, had deposed corrupt leader Nuswa Pque after a huge money laundering scandal. He was replaced by the progressive Turaak Wass in a move which surprised political commentators both Quarren and foreign. Wass approached both the Mon Calamari and Galactic Republic with a preposition to end the perceived isolation of the Quarren people on the galactic stage, suggesting a joint colonial venture between Dac's two sentient races. The Mon Calamari leaped at the chance to bring friendlier relations with the Quarren while the Republic had been pressured by scientific communities to continue galactic exploration. Negotiations between Dac and the Republic agreed that the Republic would finance most of the colonial costs in exchange for settling a world on the fringes of known space and giving free movement to the Republic's scientists.

Development
An oceanic planet on the fringe was scouted by The Republic and once cleared for no sentient life, Project Unity was officially sanctioned. An enthusiastic response from Mon Calamari society disguised the more hesitant one from the Quarren public. Famed Mon Calamari scientists and engineers flocked to Unity quickly establishing a base infrastructure with the very first town built on the beach of Pash Island. This town, known as Landside, became the base of operations for transporting material underwater for the planet's intended capital, Unity Central.

However the construction of Unity Central did not go according to plan, despite the hired services of renown Gungan architect, Kap Kap Tarphes. The colony faced three main problems:
Firstly, the strength of the Nebula of the Unknown was vastly underestimated. To communicate with the rest of the galaxy, one had to leave the system and send a signal from there. This caused significant problems in shipping much needed supplies.
Secondly, the colony suffered several raids from pirates believed to be in the pocket of the Hutts. The lure of precious materials needed to start up a colony proved too great for the galaxy's underworld to ignore. To counter this, the latest Quarren orbital defences were placed on both Unity's moons. The next time the pirates attacked their raiding fleet was crippled. The moons were named Kokad I and Kokad II after the ancient Quarren warrior caste.
Lastly, the manpower shortages left by a below expected level of Quarren immigration left the city's construction behind schedule. To overcome these shortages The Republic extended immigration rights for Unity to the Selkath. Dac's Governments protested insisting there would be greater cultural significance if it were only the two species involved but the threat of removing Republic funding quickly caused their side to buckle. The Selkath themselves had a shadow of the wealth they once had. Bacta had overtaken Kolto and the planet's economy had stagnated. As a result most of the Selkath were economic immigrants rather than the ideological explorers already on world. This led to an unexpected amount of racial discrimination on world built on the opposite principles. Selkath were passed on for influential jobs as a stereotype of unenthusiastic, money hungry Selkath grew. The result was many Selkath feeling disillusioned with the planetary Government of President Cal Tuno.

Downfall
With the successful construction of Unity Central two more cities were marked for development. One was to be built inland on the largest island, Pesh. The city was named Klatha and it was to be the centre of off-world commerce with a large spaceport dominating the city infrastructure. The city's development was looking promising however a horrifying discovery was about to made. A previously undocumented breed of deadly fungus, now known as corydis, could infect settlers with its spores. The first sign of infection was discomfort in the nasal and throat cavities as the spores settled there. Soon after the fungus would rapidly grow upwards and disrupt the brain's electronic signals. In extreme cases the fungus could tear through the victim's skin. Those infected with the fungus would turn brain dead in a matter of hours. Most sinister of all, the corydis fungus would somehow force its victim to move to higher ground before death. There the fungus would explode, scattering its spores across the widest area possible and causing the death of its host. Horror stories of the corydis fungus caused the city's evacuation. Signal disruption from the system's nebula meant calling specialist medical workers from the Republic happened too late. Any hopes that the corydis was isolated only to Pesh island were ended when the Republic's science team posted at one of the smaller islands were all infected and killed days after starting their research. President Tuno declared the inland areas of the planet off limits until a reliable vaccine could be found. This vaccine was never discovered and all futher development was focused on the beaches and beneath the waves. Unfortunately the results of deep sea development would prove even more catastrophic.

While the Mon Calamari people favoured medium to shallow level waters, the Quarren were a people who much preferred the ocean's depths. The next city to be built was to be Da'thez, one deep beneath the water's surface. Quarren Jedi Knight, Vyx Slurrax, made the city's construction his pet project. Slurrax was a kind young Jedi, who excitedly saw Unity's development as his people's chance to enhance their galactic reputation. Gaining permission from the Jedi Council, Slurrax did his best to aid in the colony's growth wherever he could. Unfortunately all the construction work had disturbed the local wildlife. A nearby ocean trench housed abominable creatures Slurrax himself was certain had been somehow corrupted by the Dark Side. These deep sea monsters attacked the fledgling city and prevented any traffic coming to and going from Da'thez. The construction teams were stranded below the waves in a half built city with very little supply and alien horrors from the perusing them. Slurrax would witness the devolution of society as groups turned on each other over the little supplies they had. As days turned to weeks, madness grew and supplies ever dwindled. Cannibalism became common occurrence with no food to go around. Eventually the surviving workers were rescued with military grade vehicles needing to disperse the sea life. President Tuno invited Slurrax and the other survivors to an award ceremony broadcast planet-wide to commemorate their bravery. The people of Unity watched in horror as President Tuno and his entourage were slaughtered live on holo by Slurrax and the other survivors. The experiences the Jedi Knight had down there drove him to madness and the corruption of the Dark Side.

Jedi Knight Slurrax who tragically succumbed to the Dark Side

Ending
Slurrax and his followers declared the Republic and Jedi traitors who had left them to die. He spread a conspiracy theory that the Nebula of the Unknown was a myth and the Republic simply wanted Unity to fail. He also tapped in to the disillusionment of the Selkath population, gaining many supporters among their ranks. Civil war erupted between those loyal to the Republic and to Dac and those who felt betrayed too many times. Surrax's supporters quickly seized control of Landside and encouraged rioting in Unity Central. Surrax himself led an assault on the moon of Kokad II and overwhelmed the confused defenders. The moons were designed to fend off attackers from space, not arriving from below. Kokad I surrendered to Surrax soon after in exchange for the defender's safe passage back to Republic space. This was a lie and the orbital weapons from their own moon was used to destroy the fleeing shuttle. Surrax declared anyone attempting to leave the system would meet the same fate so to the Republic, the colony had gone dark.
Back on Unity, a monument of Surrax was carved into the cliffs above Landside by his supporters and from above it, the fallen Jedi spoke of inflicting the same suffering to the people of Unity Central as he had endured in Da'thez. Surrax's forces attempted a siege of the underwater city but it was unsuccessful as Central's food and fresh water supplies were self sufficient. Enraged at the lack of progress, Surrax led a suicidal assault on the city, believing public support for his cause was stronger than the reality. Unity Central was torn apart in the heavy fighting which caused immense casualties to both sides including the death of Surrax himself, found to be unceremoniously killed by collapsing rubble. The war ended inconclusively with both sides leaderless and exhausted. The entire planet's supply of hyperspace capable ships were destroyed one way or another and residents were stranded when Unity was revealed to lack the precious metals and fuel sources needed to construct them. The people of Unity left their major cities and settled in much smaller, sheltered communities scattered above and below the surface. By the time the Republic investigated the silence, it was too late. The war had ended and the planet was a ghost world. The survivors had disappeared and extensive search yielded little results as all three coloniser species could disappear into the entire ocean. Within two centuries Project Unity had been forgotten.

Centuries later, the Sith have arrived. They and the locals have largely left each other alone although the Sith have communicated with larger groups to find sympathisers and used Unity's ruins as a base for their own infrastructure. The advances of technology have allowed the Sith to send communications out of the nebula although there is still scattered signal. The corydis fungus too is no longer the threat it once was and the Sith have been able to build inland. Klatha has become a vast industrial complex hidden in the mountainous jungle while the Republic's old research sites have been refitted for modern science. The moons of Kokad I and II have become the Sith's main form of orbital defence, building on the surprisingly intact weapons there. The Sith have also managed to uncover the ruin of Unity Central and are negotiating with the surviving residents there. It is believed more Sith science labs are hidden in Unity Central, backed by pro-Sith locals, to observe the creatures of the deep.

Normally I would ask that this infection and some of the marine life be given their own submissions, but with this being created for staff use I'll let it by. If this does not get chosen for Staff use it'll have the marine-life and infection will have to be put through the species section before they can be used. I'm gonna go ahead and give it my 'partial' stamp. Sending it to the next step.
