Private Under Soft Light

Shade did not pull away when he kissed her.

She remained close, her forehead still near his, breathing steadily as she let the truth of his words settle into her fully. When she finally spoke, her voice was quiet and even, but there was nothing hesitant in it, only the careful gravity of something that mattered enough to be said properly.

"There is one more thing you deserve to hear," she said softly, the words chosen with the same deliberate care she brought to every decision that could not be undone.

Her hand stayed at his chest for a moment longer, fingers spread there as if grounding both of them, before she lifted it slowly to his jaw. Her thumb brushed along the line of it with unhurried affection, a quiet reassurance that what she was about to say came from care, not distance.

"You are the heir to House Abrantes," Shade said, meeting his gaze without flinching. "And the world you move through will expect you to make choices that extend far beyond what the two of us want in this room."

She did not rush the thought, allowing it the space it deserved, her thumb still resting there, a steady point of contact.

"There will be expectations placed on you," she continued, "to marry a noble, to strengthen alliances, to become something stable and visible that others can point to and feel reassured by."

There was no bitterness in her tone, no resentment carried in the words. Only acknowledgment of reality.

"Once," she added after a measured pause, "on Csilla, I might have been someone who fit that expectation without complication."

Her fingers curved slightly at his jaw, not tightening, not retreating, simply present.

"Now I am the last of my house," Shade said quietly. "I carry no title that benefits anyone but myself, and I bring with me a history that does not sit comfortably in polite rooms or political arrangements."

She did not look away as she spoke, because she was not ashamed of it.

"I am not saying this to push you away," she said calmly. "And I am not asking you to choose me over duty without understanding what that choice would cost you."

Her thumb traced a slow, thoughtful line along his jaw again before her hand settled there, steady.

"I need you to know," Shade continued, her voice unwavering, "that if a day comes when your obligations demand something I cannot be, I will not stand in the way of what you are meant to become."

She paused, letting the truth of that rest between them, the intimacy of the moment unbroken.

"But if you are choosing me," she said, her tone firm without being hard, "then you are choosing me with open eyes, fully aware of what that means, and of what it may one day cost."

Her expression softened just enough to let him see the depth beneath the restraint.

"I will not be a secret kept out of convenience," Shade finished quietly. "And I will not be something you are asked to apologize for in order to make others comfortable."

She stayed close, neither retreating nor bracing herself, her hand still at his jaw, a silent reminder of her presence and her choice.

"If you still choose me," she said softly, "then I am here."

Not as an ultimatum. Not as a plea. But as a promise offered honestly, with the same open eyes she had asked of him.

Shade Shade

"I would never cast you aside, Shade. There isn't anything in this galaxy that would get me to abandon you. I would choose you in every life." Cassian said with a smile, pulling her in again, pressing a soft kiss against her lips. His tongue dancing with hers in the few seconds of passion they shared.

The kiss broke as he held himself close to her.

"I would never apologize for you."
