To be as swift as a coursing river...

Jarven stepped off the shuttle and onto The Expeditionary Fleet. He went to the nearest "You are here" map sign. He eventually found and made his way to the place called the "Sparring Grounds". He had left his weapons on the Handwave Express shuttle, except for his new phrik protected Vibro Rapier, which hung at his side. Honestly, it was going to take some getting used to, but he liked the idea of a sword over the Neuronic Whip. The whip had been a symbol of revenge for him, and now that he had gotten his revenge, he needed to move on. He had set up a meeting with someone called "Zavzen", hearing that the man could help train him. He waited patiently on the grounds.

Zavzen strode through the corridors of The Acheron. While it may have been a battle frigate it was still the biggest ship in The Fleet and as such he planned for training a newcomer of the fleet there. He was wearing his usual outfit of an open, black silk tunic and silk trousers with a brown cloak thrown over the top. He was wearing nothing on his feet like usual and had a sash tied around his waist. Hanging from the sash were his two sabres, contained in their sheaths. On his right thigh a holster containing the blaster pistol that he had received upon joining the fleet.

Stepping into the room he had told Jarzan to met him in, he looked over the man while shedding his cloak and throwing it into the corner. "My name is Zavzen, as you should know. Before we start I should ask, what prior training do you have with a sword? And what style of fighting do you wish to learn? Offensive, defensive, acrobatic, minimalistic? Please be thorough."

Jarven mulled this topic over in his mind. Well, I like running people through...Okay, you, time out, now. Aaaaahhhh....Now, your style, Jarven...Yeah...my style...Well, I usually go in hard and fast. I want to defend myself from force users. I need to have this sword as a source of dueling potential....hmm....

"I haven't had any previous training with a sword," started Jarven. "I've used a whip before...but not anymore." A smirk came to his face as he remembered why he had lost his whip. "In my fighting style, I tend to go in hard and fast. However, if I get into a long and drawn out engagement, I'm going to need to know how to defend myself until I can gain the advantage."

Zavzen hummed as he took in what Jarzen said. "Well then, I think the best style for you would be Juyo and a mix of Makashi and Soresu. But thats for when we get onto styles. First, give me your sword." He held his hand out, waiting to see what his newest student would do.

(Sorry if its too short, there's not much else I can think to add.)

Jarven quickly pulled the sword out with a strong flourish...and then paused. By giving this man his sword, he was leaving himself defenseless. He slowly turned it over and, grabbing the blade near the cross guard, he reluctantly gave the sword to the teacher. Once he handed it off, he stepped back and tried out those weird, strange words he had just heard.

"...Jew-yo...Muh-cash-ee...So-ray-soo...."

Zavzen chuckled when he heard his student trying out the names of the lightsaber forms he had said. As he reached out for the sword he said, "Don't worry yourself about the forms I said. They're lightsaber forms and I tend to use them when I teach someone to fight a certain way, it makes it easier as each one already has its own style." Turning his attention to the sword in his hands he turned it over in his hands for a few seconds before holding it from the hilt and stretching his arm out for a second. Pulling the sword in again he tried to bend it and found it to have a slight give. Smiling he held the sword out, offering it back to it's owner. "Its well balanced, light and has some give meaning it won't break under stress easily. All in all a good sword. What do you call it anyway, or have you not named it yet?"

"No, no. Every sword that you wield should be an extension of yourself, you should know it weaknesses and its strengths. Its job and duty. The easiest way to do this is to name them." Reaching down Zavzen patted the hilt of his longer sword, "This is Saviour. I use her in the defence of others and, more often than not, myself when in combat." He then patted the hilt of his second sword, "This is Reaper. In combat it is mainly him that tares asunder the enemy and strikes the killing blow." He smiled at his student again, "What name do you give yours?"

Ohhh...Jarven thought about that for a little bit and then he said, "Well...to have a name, one must first have an identity. To have an identity, one must be known for something. This sword has just begun its journey, so I don't believe I could come up with a name that would do it justice. Not yet, anyway..."

"Very well then. We shall start. Now, we won't be starting with something big, but we are starting with something important." Zavzen drew his longer sword, Saviour, and came to stand in front of Jarven. He settled into a relaxed stance, body almost fully side on, both arms falling to his side, feet close together. "You shall find that I like to physically teach, then tell my student the lesson. If you have no qualms about that, attack me."

Jarven smiled underneath his helmet. He liked this guy. Assuming a dubious stance, he shrugged. Then, he quickly crouched down, coiled his muscles, and pounced/lunged leaped forward. As he was in the air, he had raised his arm and was now holding his arm rigid and straight out 90 degrees from his body, the length of his sword making quick, distracting circles in the air as he rolled his wrist around. When he landed in front of Zavzen, he dropped down and tried to leg sweep behind Zavzen's knee caps.

Zavzen nodded at Jarzen as he neatly side stepped around the leg sweep. "Very good, use the blade for distraction while attacking with the body, you already know one of my future lessons. Well done. However," Zavzen leaped back from his student, landing in the same starting position he had just held, "I want you to attack with the sword only. We shall try again. Attack me when your ready."

Wow. He had dodged that one easily. Jedi?...He tried to think of how he would approach this one. He likes physical lessons...He's likely not above dealing out pain for a lesson...I have to prepare for a counter attack...Turn body to side. Minimize hit box. His cybernetic reflexes seemed to slow down time, giving him the chance for analysis. He's looking for a surprise now, but that doesn't rule the element out. Speed is the key.

Jarven raised his sword in front of him, turned his body, and shuffled swiftly over to Zavzen, keeping his movement rhythm hectic and seemingly random. When he got into range, he quickly extended an inquisitive stab at the man. He only committed enough strength to the blow so that the strike would come quickly, but no more. He knew that the man was ready for him to attack.

Zavzen chuckled as he twisted his body to dodge. "It would seem that you are picking up some of my lessons without me even getting around to them. Staggering your speed is a good way to break the enemy's defence." Again Zavzen stepped back out of Jarven's reach, and smiled. "Now, attack again but this time, keep on attacking, do not stop until I tell you to. This is a test of your endurance." The last bit was a partial lie by the pale Zabrak. It was a test of endurance but it was the beginning of a further lesson for Jarven.

Grrf...He's not attacking back...Attack!...A test of endurance....Hmmmmm...

He raised his sword, closed his eyes, breathed out a long sigh, flicked his eyes open, and acted. He leaped into the air and pumped a small boost of power from his jet pack. He came down at the man with an overhead strike and then fell into a rhythm that he made up as he went.

Step, jab, step, jab, step, jab, jab, step, step, left swing, right swing, step, overhead, step, step, step, jump and spin at him.

The rhythm was kind of taking a toll, but he was okay for now.

Zavzen smirked as Jarven attacked him and sidestepped the downwards slash. He continued in this vain for a while, weaving around the attacks. Step left, step back, step left, step right, duck, step back, step left, duck forwards.

Eventually Zavzen had seen enough to get a good idea on his student's endurance. Using Saviour he blocked the next at, angling his blade so that it slid of to the side. He then stepped in close and drew Reaper in a reverse grip before bringing it up to Jarven's neck. "That's enough." He said before stepping back, sheathing both swords as he went. "You have high levels of endurance, a good thing to be sure, you just need to learn when how not to burn up you energy, but that comes more with experience than anything." Zavzen clapped his hands together before continuing, "Lesson time. Now, tell me. What did I do then?"

Jarven knew what had happened. The man had used his superior agility to dodge his attacks. Ehhh...Jedi....I wonder where Ysalamari come from?..."You tried to play the long game and wear me out. In a real case, the enemy would likely become frustrated and make mistakes."

[member="Zavzen Sae'ryx"]

"Very good." Zavzen nodded at Jarven. "But I did more than that, I dodged. After all, why should I waste energy to block against a strike when I could use lest to simple step out of the way? My advice to you is that if you ever fight, keep it simple, conserve energy. Also, if you must block, aim not to. Aim instead to redirect the attack to the side, do not fight the strike but use its own energy against it." Zavzen clapped his hands together. "Now, I am a believer that one can only learn swordfighting through experience and building upon ground work that is laid down by the teacher. As such, our lesson will be shorter than you probably expected. Anyway! First thing, offence. I will now be teaching you an offensive style. First though, any questions?"

(Sorry. I'd just written a long post and must of used "Zavzen" twenty plus times as such when I went to write "ven" i wrote "zen". I've edited it to normal.)

"Very well, we shall begin. The style I shall be teaching you is Juyo, the Ferocity Form. When using this form the saying 'The best defence is a good offence.' is true. When using Juyo you focus only on attacking. In this form the focus is on endurance and strength as you must never let up on the attack, must never stop. It is from the constant pace that Juyo gets its true strength. Your strike will look to be random and chaotic but beneath the surface you must work to make one attack flow to the other, you can do this by never pulling back an attack, follow it through and arc is around for another, if you do this no momentum is lost, instead it is gained and the kinetic energy behind the strikes also increases. Any questions before we spar? Where I will have you using what I have said."
