Connel just kept eye contact with his little buddy who was in hog heaven right now, savoring the moment as his companion reveled in pure joy. The connection between them was palpable, a bond forged through shared experiences and unspoken understanding. It was moments like these that reminded Connel of the simple, unfiltered happiness life could offer. Even with Kat poking fun at how trusting he was being.

While it DID make him wonder why he was being so trusting. There was something easy to trust about her.

My Chief of Security has vetted you already. He nodded at Buster who was just as happy as happy could be. Even if he is a little goober!! Buster, as if on cue, seemed to just lean back into her even further.

He likes you… I like you… It was an interesting thought, but it was the truth.

"Other days it can be a raging storm. Waves crashing over the decks. Washing belongings and people away beneath its watery depths. Yet there is still a beauty even to that. The ocean is owned by no-one...yet plenty of people can belong to the sea."

There certainly was...

How did she know that though? The tides seemed to press against her skin as they spoke, clear and present in her mind. Yet it was unclear how she had even felt that sensation before. Was it all in her imagination?

"You are very lucky," Phobos noted. "I don't know if I will ever know what it feels like. Even if it is dangerous... To live is to experience."

Sometimes it felt like she couldn't do that.

"Lucky...Huh? It's funny you say that. Everyone always thinks someone else is lucky. They rarely think about how lucky they are themselves."

She let out a small wistful sigh at that. Urgh. She was starting to get far too philosophical now. Reina was meant to be a blunt tool. A hammer. All of this thinking and reminisicng didn't suit her in her eyes. There was a part of her that felt as if she should be stood here, staring off into the distance whilst smoking a death stick...but that wasn't her.

"Some might say to live is to survive. That as long as you breathe. As long as your heart beats, that you're alive. I'm not sure how I feel about that myself."

Reina shrugged her shoulders. It matched up somewhat with what she believed in. That only those with beating hearts counted as being alive. Other beings such as the undead or droids did not count.

That as long as you breathe. As long as your heart beats, that you're alive.

Phobos clutched at her chest, letting out a breathless exhale. Her heart didn't beat... she didn't breath... What even was she? While the sentiment of Reina was intended to be reassuring, there was no way that she could have known that Phobos didn't have a heart...

"I suppose that's true," the young woman muttered.

She didn't know if she was alive. Maybe she had died before. It felt like she had died before.

That was a scary thought.

Katarine felt herself blush when he said he liked her. She also felt the familiar nerves stir in her stomach but tried to ignore them. Sitting here talking was nice and she didn’t need to get overly concerned and work herself into a panic. She tended to do that ever since her past, and it was high time she learned not to.

“I guess it is a done deal then.”

She was now scratching under Busters chin, and laughing when he thumped his foot.

“I like you guys too. Especially this little fuzz ball. How long have you had him?”

Connel smiled and whispered “Goooober” at Buster who was swinging his paws playfully. Sure, he was listening to what she had to say, nodding to her assertion as it was a “done deal”. Then when she asked about how long he had Buster around, he cocked his head sideways.

Who? This Goober? He “pawed” at Buster who pawed back. A few years ago, I was on an assignment on Gallinore and found this little guy crying alone on a beach. Buster, as if on cue, seemed to change his demeanor and reach out with a look as if to say “you okay?”.

Took him with him, waited a couple of days to find if someone was missing him… after a few days there was no response so he came with me… Buster then put his chin back on Kat’s knee.

The rest is history.

Vess didn't answer right away. Her fingers adjusted in his again as the music rolled on, her steps matching his in quiet, confident rhythm. She wasn't graceful in the way that turned heads, but she moved with the kind of balance that came from surviving long enough to stop flinching. That, and maybe just a bit of muscle memory she didn't know she still had.

She listend to him he was someone who knew what it cost to care too much, and still hadn't figured out how to stop. That part, she understood.

So when he twirled her, when he pulled her back in, she didn't resist or stumble. If anything, there was a flicker of amusement in her eyes as she came back into his space, like she wasn't quite used to this much coordination going well. It was disarming. In a good way.

"You don't sound like a hypocrite," she said quietly, once he'd let the silence run its course. "You sound like someone who's still thinking. That's rare."

Her tone stayed light, even if her gaze didn't waver. "I get it, though. When people believe too hard, they stop checking their footing. Thats when you get killed." She paused, let the weight of that sit between them.

"But I think that's why people like us matter. People who keep asking the questions. People who know it isn't clean." Then came the last question, and her brow lifted slightly. No deflection this time. No misdirection.

"I haven't decided, but I owe Valery a lot." she admitted. "I didn't come looking for a banner to stand under. But I keep finding reasons to stay. Not all of them tactical. I'm not good with groups. But… this one hasn't scared me off yet."

Katarine couldn't imagine the poor little pup alone and abandoned. She felt a wave of gratitude for Connel helping Buster. Many times animals were thought of as secondary and Katarine never believed that. They deserved love and dignity just the same as more sentient creatures.

"Well I think it's worked out for the best. He really seems happy."

She knew Galinore was part of the Hapes system, but she had never been. It made her wonder if that should be on her to do list. Maybe she could go find a little pet there as well someday.

Connel smiled at her kind words. In truth, he did not know where he would be without that little pile of fluff. Buster was truly his best friend and they had bonded over time.

He’s a Goooooooberrrr… Looking right at Bister as he said it, the pup jumped at Connel, who laughed. He’s a good boy, even if he steals my food.

Buster just looked up at Kat and licked her as Connel shook his head.

You “himbo”... Buster just looked at him for a moment and then went back to showing her love, Connel just shook his head. He’ll never get enough of anything edible if you ask him.

Connel then smiled at her kind words.

It’s all Buster.

Of course Reina didn't notice Phobos' little panic. Why would Reina notice when she was going through her own issues in this precise moment? She just folded her arms along her front, staring off at the sky giving a small shake of her head in the direction of Phobos.

"Maybe it's true. Maybe it isn't true. I don't know. Most of what I say is wrong at the end of the day."

She waved her hand dismissively at her own comment. Her opinion was just that. An opinion. It wasn't often for Reina that she ever thought she was doing something right, or if she was doing the correct thing.

Well, at least she wasn't dead set on that definition. That was reassuring.

"Do you always dismiss what you say?" Phobos asked. "You seem to place doubt on yourself a lot."

Her words were not judgemental, just curious.

He found some clarity within her words, maybe because in Kains mind, he was always a bit of a rebel. But that in of itself said something about him. If he wasn't questioning, if he wasn't taking every stride with a bit of caution for who he kept around, would he have made it this far? Keeping his sanity during the darker parts of his life? Knowing the evil in the world, the good parts too. Probably not was the conclusion he reached as the music began to slow in tempo.

"Anyone ever tell ya how wise you are?" A genuine question and compliment bundled up. "It's ugly, but maybe that's the point? By asking questions, we keep a wide berth from turning into cattle." The next few steps slowed but the energy was still there. Committing to the dance, but being aware of where it could lead next.

"Rather be in a crew like this than one that thinks they got it all figured out. I'd be half way to the door if they did." It wasn't perfect no, and not everyone would stop and stare before running headlong into danger, but it was leagues better than taking that first step blind to the world and it's ways. "We got people who know how ugly this is going to get, and they keep showing up. Call it what you might but, I think that's a good sign. Honest, at the very least."

"Guess I'm saying in not so many words, you're in good company if ya stick around."
He looked into her eyes with a slight glint of admiration. "But I'm not gonna preach why you should or shouldn't. And while the people are good apples, I'll be the voice of caution here." Kain brought her a bit closer as they stepped into a twirl, letting his voice hang low enough not to be overheard by anyone else. "Don't do it for us. Hell, don't even commit for the moral reasons. If you stick around. Do it for the people who can't stand up to power unleashed, and more importantly... Do it for yourself."

"Always? No. Most of the time, yes."

Reina gave a shrug at that. It was something that had been happening recently. But of course you'd start losing faith in yourself after you had what you were changed fundamentally. Losing confidence. It wasn't something she was going to trauma dump over.

"It's hard to think you're right, when most people around you prove you wrong."

"I mean. You're also good at looking good. You're good at inspiring people. You're also good at brightening my day whenever I see you."

Shan broke out into a little grin at that, as he sat down with Lily away from the others so they could talk. There was plenty for the pair to talk about but for once, Shan didn't feel any pressure over it. Normally he was afraid that he'd put his foot in his mouth, but as long as he was himself, he shouldn't worry. The Mirialan just leaned back, listening to Lily as she spoke, nodding along slowly.

"I'll...still probably be doing Jedi things. Or at least relief work. I just can't be out there. Every time I'm in a battle, and I'm in the medical tents...I feel like a Jedi should be out there fighting. And I can't do that. I'm at my best, when I'm focused on treating the people in front of me."

Guardians. Defenders. That was the kind of Jedi needed right now. Not scholars, diplomats or pacifists like Shan. It was a disappointment to be sure, but he needed to take a step back. This war could ruin Shan if he had let it, and he was going to do his best to make sure that he didn't lose who he was. He couldn't give into the fight.

"I'll teach Zaiya as much as I can, and for as long as she'll have me. Teaching is one of the things I do best. At least that's how it feels."

He slowly nodded along with Lily as she spoke about how Jedi were peacekeeprs, not warriors and he couldn't help but break out into a grin at that. He also couldn't help but admire her at the same time. They were things that Shan had wanted to hear at the end of the day as he reached his hand out to rest it atop of Lily's.

"I'm just not the Jedi needed for this war. I can't bring an end to it. But...I can help pick up the pieces afterwards...Anyway. Less about that doom and gloom. How are you doing? We haven't really...talked much since Naboo. It's given me plenty of time to think."

The Mirialan just let that in the air for now. He'd clarify on it later but for now? He just wanted to see how Lily had been doing.

She nudged Shan playfully, "nice save. Nearly called you out for focusing on my looks and fighting abilities, but you saved it with the other compliments." Lily poked her tongue out at Shan, enjoying the idea of making him squirm. Her grin settled a little as she listened to the issue that Shan had. It wasn't the Jedi, it was the idea of fighting. Being in the battle that he could not cope with. It was difficult since that was where Lily felt the most herself. It was in the battle, in a fight where she felt expressive and calm.

However, she had always know that Shan was never someone who enjoyed fighting or understood the benefits that was had in the act of fighting.

"I... I will always want to fight. Whether that is in a dojo, training arena or in the middle of a war. That is where I am needed and where I do my best work. Your best work is elsewhere, you belong somewhere that isn't in the middle of a warzone and that's okay." Lily affirmed, she did not think that everyone needed to fight. It was more important that a person went where they were the most effective, the most helpful. Lily always knew that deep down, she just struggled since there was always a fear that her decisions would not be met with the respect that she saw others.

That she would be labelled a meat head, a brute, bloodthirsty. That wasn't who Lily was and the idea that she could be seen that way was something she hated the thought of.

"I am sure that Zaiya appreciates your lessons. And as I said, there will be a need for Jedi like you after this is all said and done. Hopefully there will be a need for more Jedi like you and less of the ones like me." There was an earnest tone to her voice, she did not want to be the shining example of a Jedi. Lily couldn't be that since that wasn't who the Jedi were meant to be.

When Shan asked about herself and mentioned he had done a lot of thinking since their last encounter on Naboo, Lily raised an eyebrow, "I am doing good but seems you need to share your thoughts with me before I tell you what has happened with me since the last meeting we had." She wanted to hear everything that Shan had to say before she would share the news of her travels and the future that was close at hand.

"Oh. Okay. No copying." Jane responded before switching up, making little loth-cat ears and shaking her hips like she had a tail. Her small smile remained constant throughout; once she left, it would undoubtedly melt like Eshan snow in the sun. However, something had changed in her, as small as it may have seemed at first.

So Jane danced with Lestra, flailing her hands and jumping from left to right, all while avoiding hitting Lestra. To her credit, she only hit his shoulder once and ducked under an incoming hand.

The short girl had no idea how much time had passed by the time she felt content; it was possibly the first time in her life that she was not acutely aware of the passage of time. An unusual experience, but not entirely unwelcome. She shifted her gaze from Lestra and looked around at the people around them, each doing their own thing. She'd even seen Everest, gliding across the floor with Tigris.

A warmth settled in her chest, before she returned her attention back to Lestra.
"I have to be up early tomorrow, so I have to go now." Jane spoke to him, raising her voice slightly to be heard above the music. "But, thank you for the dancing. I will never forget this, I had fun."

Jane lowered her upper body in gratitude to the blue-haired teenager, then straightened her spine.
"I will see you around. Goodbye."

As always, the girl did not wait for a response. Her mind had already wandered off to the next thing to do, and her body followed suit; she turned around and left the party, to sink into a deep sleep with dreams of flashing lights, cheerful music, and a lot of dancing not long after.

"Come on Lily. You know me. Whenever have your looks been the only thing about you that I've focused on? You're more than just them. A lot more."

He nodded as Lily spoke about wanting to always fight. It wasn't something he held against her. Not anymore at least. He had grown past that. His prejudice against fighting was a thing of the past for him. It might not have suited Shan, but the idea Lily fighting was something that made sense to Shan as he lifted his hand up onto Lily's shoulder, giving her a small pat.

"Of course it's okay. Same way it's okay for you to be on the battlefield. Our best work is done separate from each other. But I enjoy being by your side. It helps me to see you. And I can only hope that seeing me helps you at the end of the day Lily. Even if that's a bit egotistical for me to think."

Shan's gaze moved on towards the sky as he finished speaking, once again listening to Lily. She sounded earnest about the idea of there being more Jedi like Shan. It did bring a smile to his face, even though in Shan's eyes, the meaning of being a Jedi was different for everyone. There might be more Jedi like him. More like Lily. Or some that were completely different. But he did not get to judge any of them.

"There will always be need for Jedi like you Lily. Fighting is...a natural part of life. Same with peace. You can't have one without the other...Well. That might be wrong actually. You can always have war and fighting without peace. But you can't know what peace is, if there's never been any war or fighting."

Though then came to the hard part of the discussion. It shouldn't be that hard. Shan had already said the last time they had met that he was willing to take a risk with dating Lily. But was that really something he should be bringing up again now? With the state the Galaxy was. Yes. He had to be bold. Not be passive.

"After thinking about things...I just want to say that I am eager to stay at your side. There isn't anywhere else I want to be. Even after giving some time towards it."
