Thirst For Knowledge (Coci Heavenshield)

Greetings Master Heavenshield,

My name is Caedyn, and I have been told that you can help me in my search for knowledge of the art of Light Alchemy. I have in my possession, the holocron of Phylis Alince who has lent it to me for a short time. Before I can produce any results, I need to better understand and know how to shape the light of the Force.

If you have any time to meet with me, could you please meet with me? I can be contacted on Kashyyyk within the Silver Rest. I would be so grateful for any help or advise you could offer!

Respectfully,
Caedyn Arenais.

Caedyn's first step in the pursuit of better understanding the Alkahest process had turned up results, as well as the knowledge that he wasn't entirely ready to begin practicing the art of Light Alchemy. The Chronicle of Light had responded to his questions well, the Gatekeeper having taken the form of the Jedi Master, [member="Phylis Alince"], whom had permitted him the temporary use and soon revealed to him a few prerequisites that he had yet to accomplish in his learning. A learned blacksmith under his time with the Je'daii, Force Light was the major setback for which Caedyn had yet to ever study or practice; And while he could have acquired these lessons from his father [member=Veiere Arenais], it had always been Caedyn's wish to isolate his training away from House Arenais in order to prove to himself beyond all else, that he was capable of making his own way in the Galaxy.

The Heavenshields were well known to the Order of the Silver Jedi, if not most Jedi Organizations who had been around longer than a full cycle. Two members of this family were also well acquainted with his Father and had been mentioned in passing to both Caedyn and [member="Loreena Arenais"] in the past. It hadn't been all that difficult to track down her former Silver Jedi Frequency from the Archive Database with the intention of messaging her privately to arrange a hopeful meet and greet. To his knowledge, they'd not met personally, though he was hoping that Coci Heavenshield would be open to sharing some of her expertise with the young Arenais.

A bright crisp morning greeted Coci through the window of her office, high up in the mountains of Midvinter. She sat down with caf in hand and opened up her computer to start the day with viewing messages from across the galaxy. Anything from the Jedi Alliance to personal message, was the start of her day and she was hoping for some form of communication from her son [member="Thirdas Heavenshield"]. The last she had heard from him was that he arrived safely and had started training with the Silver military, she knew he would be busy now, little time to spend on writing to his mother, but he would eventually.

There was one name that stuck out, Caedyn Arenais. Must be Veiere's boy, she mused to herself as she opened the file, as it was not exactly a common name. The content of the message was interesting to say the least, not many in the Jedi wished to pursue the art of Alkahest and from what she read, Caedyn had done his research well, seeking out the main master of this art who has spent a life time of study in this field. Furthermore, it was clear that Caedyn had considered all the necessary skills to achieving his search and studies and Coci was always willing to help any Jedi who wished to study the art of Force Light. Something every Jedi should hope to achieve, but not all of them do, nor do all of them have to capacity to that skill.

She wrote back.

Mister Arenais,

Greetings from Midvinter. I would be delighted to help you in any way I can in your research and studies in Force Light. I reside on Midvinter which I believe you are familiar with and when it is convenient to you, meet me at the Dawnguard Fortress. There is no landing pad, so you will have to climb.

If you have any problems, please contact me.

Regards
Grand Master Coci Heavenshield.

There was a knock at the door, and in walked one of the Dawnguard Knights of the Order, Coci put down her caf and stood. It appeared that today would be a busy day. Lesson number one: Never assume.

Caedyn's first priority was an easy one, confirmation of [member="Coci Heavenshield"]'s invitation to Midvinter. His correspondence with the Jedi Master was quickly sent away before his attention moved to more immediate needs, readying himself for the new adventure and intent on leaving as quickly as possible.

It wasn't unusual for Caedyn to be seen coming and going from the Silver Rest, though it probably frustrated some people like say [member="Asaraa Vaashe"] whom rarely seemed to catch a moment with him these days, or perhaps even [member="Yuroic Xeraic"] whom had agreed to show him the ropes where life in the Silver Jedi Order was concerned. Despite their frustrations, Caedyn was impulsive and always on the move across the Galactic Charts; atleast this trip held a sense of potential in the force that would really help him to grow as an individual and a member of the Order.

By the time he reached the Hangar, The Repertoire was already fired up and ready to depart courtesy of the ever faithful and reliable "Lexas". Moving with swift pace, Caedyn walked up onto the main deck of the Corvette with a pack over his shoulder, belongings for the venture as well as the warm winter clothes on his back. He had indeed heard of Midvinter though never actually visited the place before. Apparently it was a cold and frozen over world, and the general climate would make him miss the typically warm air of Kashyyyk's nature.

A couple days later...
Caedyn's arrival was greeted with the turbulence of a wild storm as he made his descent for the coordinates of the Dawnguard Temple, the weather seemingly angered at the intrusion of it's Corvette didn't spare the young pilot any as he and his droid companion were thrown about in their seats. Heck, even Ashla could be heard in the back barking and yelping in panic as her little claws scraped against the Corvette's flooring, the little pupper sliding from one side of the ship to the other trying to make sense of what was happening whilst Caedyn took to the controls and sought to guide the starship down as best as he possibly could.

To the rear of his ship, the Repertoire rocked as lightning clashed against the ships hull, emergency sirens going off in the cockpit and forcing Cae to grimace at the thought of what potential damages had just been caused to his baby; the Corvette, not the Yorshi Pup. "Dawnguard, this is Caedyn Arenais of the Repertoire. I'm en-route and preparing to land near your location, but this storm's got me a bit turned around up here and my sensory array's just gone down on me..." Caedyn frowned as he took a quick glance to the secondary monitor as Lexas brought up the forward visual display and switched over to thermal; "Please inform Master Heavenshield of my arrival, Caedyn out" he concluded abruptly.

"My typical luck!" Caedyn growled at the chances, doing his best to keep the repertoire in a steady glide, the thrusters slowly being eased off whilst he prepared to revert the power to the repulsors, hoping for a controlled landing, albeit a blind one as far as the vessels sensors were concerned.

Lexus turning and speaking up over the shaking of the turbulence "You do seem to find yourself in these dangerous situations far more than most sentient's I've known, Master Caedyn".

"Thanks a lot bud'" Caedyn replied, doing his best to let go of his sudden anxiety and reach out to the Force that it might guide his actions and aid in the vessels safe landing. From the Dawnguard temple, the sight would be something else. The Corvette descending quicker than it ought to be, a trail of smoke coming from the rare, the nose of the vessel soon lifting as the repulsors fired moments before the ship touched down with the surface, the corvette's landing struts breaking under the weight as the Repertoire slid across the snow plain, gradually coming to a halt, though not without a good bit of noise and a likely expensive first impression with Midvinter.

A Knight of the Dawnguard entered her office, "Grand Master we have had communication from Caedyn Arenais, he is about to land". Coci turned with a smile, "Well he picked a good day for it". And as she turned back to the window, Coci could just make out the lights of a ship bleeding through the snow storm and by the trajectory it was coming in hard and fast and wobbly. Any other time, she would allow the visitor to make their own way up the mountain side to the temple but this young lad might need assistance, and besides it was the son of a friend. "Take some men and make sure the young man finds his way safely". The Knight left to fulfill the orders.

The ship touched down with a thud, she could see a large spray of snow erupt into the air before she lost sight of it. She was actually impressed, it was a difficult day to land a ship and even though it was not graceful he managed. It would be a good hour before Caedyn would enter the temple, even with the guidance of the Dawnguard knights, so it was time to go get some breakfast, a nice caf and a cheese toastie. Can't start a lesson on an empty stomach.

~oOo~
As she walked the corridors to the entrance of the Fortress of Dawn, Coci pulled her cloak around her body already feeling the ice cold wind whistling up the halls. The young lad would be arriving soon, and she will await him there. The view was incredible from here, looking out over the valley below, the path that her and Thurion had walked that day when they found this place upon the Blessed Peak. It was inhospitable then, as it is now and very hard to navigate to if you don't know the way which is perfect with natural defenses.

To say the day was bleak was an understatement, and today she would not be able to marvel at the view, the blizzard had not only set in but increased with fury. The shiver ran through her body like ice and set her blood to freeze, it felt like. She hoped the boy would hurry, even with the force to aid her, nothing seems to kill the Midvinter cold.

Taking a glance down the thousand steps, she could just make out dark figures approaching slowly, this made her smile as they would all be in the warmth soon enough.

In some ways the journey up the mountain was worse then his descent down through the storm, though he was being led by a welcoming party, it didn't do much to dismiss his embarrassment and annoyance over the mishap involving the Repertoire. The damage to the landing struts had been significant and this meant he'd be staying on Midvinter longer than he'd intended. Pulling his Robes around him a little tighter, Caedyn tried to stave off the cold as they came within sight of the Temple and from what he could just make out, there, a figure awaiting them.

Only a short trek more and he was being introduced to [member="Coci Heavenshield"], this time in person. "Sorry about the uh...." Caedyn paused and turned to glance back the way he'd come from, the wind having swept the snow from the mountaintop and in doing so clouding the view of the ground far below from sight, "Landing." Caedyn expressed with a sheepish smile. Soon realizing his manners and lowering his head in a bow of formal greeting, a trait of the Jedi and Je'daii both.

"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Master Heavenshield" he greeted her, soon straightening his posture and offering a warm and friendly smile. "I really appreciate your invitation, this is my first time on Midvinter. Though I'm not sure she feels the same way about me" he chuckled quietly as the group began to move on inside.

Veiere had come a long way since their first meeting on Voss, and now before her stood his son. Coci could see the features of the man in the boy, and no doubt some of his mother as well. She returned his bow equally, as it is always offered to Jedi no matter their rank as a form of respect to each other not just for a superior. She turned and led him back down the corridor and into the warmth of the main hall, and slowly walked so he could enjoy the atmosphere and thaw his body. "It is good to meet you too Caedyn. Midvinter gets angry sometimes, to us all", she smiled back. "A room has been provided for you, one of the knights will escort you to it later".

"Now you have not come all this way to take in the sights. So if you are ready we shall begin", she said opening another door off the main hall and invited him into a smaller room in which they can study. "It is a little dark in here but that will help us focus", she closed the door behind them both.

Coci indicated to a seat for him to take, as she sat opposite him. "Now tell me what you wish to learn and why". She rested her hands in her lap and studied the young man, although she understood from his message he wanted to learn skills that would help with Alkahest she wanted to learn about his ambitions with it. The wind outside had not calmed but ripped against the pane and threatened to enter, added to it's assault were hard pellets of snow which gathered along the window sill outside. The room defended them against the cold, the hearth strong with fire and kept them safe and provided more light, although it danced with wind from the chimney.

Before the young man could answer, the door opened and in walked a girl with a service tray on which was set some food and hot drink. Coci thanked her before she departed and offered the fare to Caedyn. "You must be hungry and cold .. please. Help yourself".

The Dawnguard Temple wasn't quite what he'd expected, given that [member="Coci Heavenshield"] had been rumored to be one of the founding members of the Silver Jedi many years ago. In comparison to the Silver Rest, there on Midvinter it was much more humbling in the sense that the structure was made of natural materials and wasn't blinding with shining technology; It actually reminded Caedyn a great deal of the Temples of the Je'daii where he had first trained in.

Moving to take his seat once offered, Caedyn listened to Coci's question with a faint smile crossing him in memory of the Gatekeeper's similar query. Those whom know of the art, seemed to be rather careful about whom they chose to share in it's teachings with, as far as he could tell. Caedyn leaned forward a little, about to answer when the opening of the doors caught him off guard and he rather swallowed his words, not having the sense of familiarity with the Temple to speak freely before people whom weren't involved, nor needed to be.

Realizing the purpose of the girl's entrance, Caedyn's eyes fell to the tray briefly before glancing sideways back to Coci. "Oh, Master. I hope no one's gone to any special trouble for me?" he asked a little apprehensively, glancing back to the one holding the selection of food and taking the hot cup of caf, bowing his head with an appreciative smile. "Thank you, very much" he spoke gently, and she soon taking her leave, allowing Caedyn to turn back to their conversation.

"I suppose I'm not what you'd call a typical Jedi?" He spoke freely, now that they were in private. "I was raised on Commenor by my parents, but I didn't begin my training until the age of thirteen under [member=Asha Hex] and the Je'daii Order. Nowadays I've found myself with the Order of the Silver Jedi, and I want to find...-Myself, I suppose. Who I am to be as a Jedi in the Galaxy" he smiled warily, a little sheepish even. It all sounded rather silly when he spoke the words aloud and heard himself.

"I've already had training in Vur Tepe, and I'm an able smith. I've made Force Imbued Swords before, but when I came across Alkahest in the archives, and saw how little was actually mentioned, I wanted to know more. That's when I contacted [member="Phylis Alince"] and she lent me the Chronicle of Light".

"And what is a typical Jedi, Caedyn?", she asked with a smile as he sat a little unsure of himself. "You sound like a typical Jedi", she added as she shifted in her seat. He continued to speak, mentioning Master Phylis and now Coci knew he was on the right path in his search for the knowledge of Alkahest after all the woman had spent almost a life time in study of this. However, Coci was not a practitioner of the art but she could certainly help Caedyn gain the skills toward his purpose.

"Your journey has started and has led you here to me and not without results", she stood up and walked the room, her eyes searching for something that would help start the learning. Coci found a small coin and picking it up she returned to her seat and placed the coin on the table between them. "Tell me what you understand of Force Light and the Art of Small". Let's see how deep his knowledge of the theory is before they would begin.

"You do realise that not only the art of Alkahest but these skills you wish to learn are a life time of study and will take a long time before you are capable of great things", she had the feeling he understood but it is a good thing to hear as a reminder.

"The coin I placed on the table, pick it up and examine it. Then tell me what properties it possesses". It was a basic coin nothing special about it other then it was old and made of durasteel and silver coated, and smooth to the touch.

"You know...-Someone who starts in the Order as an Initiate and rises up through the ranks. Someone who's actually trained like a Jedi, not like I have..." He shrugged his shoulders, his words spoken almost carelessly, forgetting himself before the presence of the Master that [member="Coci Heavenshield"] was. "It's nice of you to say so, Master Heavenshield" Caedyn replied, this time making certain to speak with better manners; "But sounding like a Jedi isn't enough for me" he admitted. Without their training, Caedyn felt like he was on the outside looking in, and without anything to offer outside of being [member="Asaraa Vaashe"]'s boyfriend, there was a fear there that they would always see him that way. There because of her and little else. "I need to make it my own way, and I've got to earn it" he concluded. Everyone else seemed to be off fighting a war, whilst Caedyn felt like he was still fighting one within himself, self-acceptance forever out of reach. A result of a life introduced to chaos, so early on.

"My Father and my Sister can project light..." [member="Loreena Arenais"] had showed him within the caves beneath their estate on Commenor, she'd called it her little trick as though it was some kind of neat game move. Back then, for the twins whom were still so young, that's all it really was. How could Lori have known that she held a weapon against the Darkside within her very palm, at that age. "It's most powerful against dispelling the effects of the Darkside, I'm told".

"The Art of the small, however..." He continued, "Is a use of the Force on a microscopic level. The Force flows through all live, right down to the very molecule right? Somehow with the art of the small, we can control and manipulate the mass to produce different results like sparking a flame or projecting heat in a cold environment..." Caedyn had recieved some practice on the ability, though neither force light or the art of the small were abilities that he felt confident in, yet.

"It was a rhetorical question, Caedyn", she said with a smile, and a poor attempt at humour as it turned out. "Study in Jedi arts is all very good and well, going through the academy to acquire knowledge is only part of it. The most important part is the journey which you choose to take in order to get there. To acquire knowledge whatever that might be. You say you need to earn it, who .. exactly .. said you need to earn it? yourself or someone else".

She looked down at the coin on the table once more and back to him. "You don't earn it. You experience it and through experience, you achieve it". She pointed to the coin, "And another thing you do, is listen to the instructions of your masters". Coci stood up and paced the room, she would not continue their lesson until he recalled her previous instruction. If Caedyn had come here to chat he was going to be dissatisfied with his visit.

Hopefully while he examined the coin, Coci found a small crystal and held it up to the light of the candle admiring the colours and facets within the stone. It was a common piece of quartz, with a touch of pink running through the center, a small flick of dirt encased within the structure and this piece might make a good lesson for the art of small. She put it in her pocket for now.

"Well? what is your answer", she turned back to him.

"And another thing you do, is listen to the instructions of your masters".
At first, Caedyn had to question what he'd done wrong, though he wasn't silly enough to voice his confusion, his head tilted a little and he suddenly realized that she'd given him an instruction to pick up and study the coin she'd left upon the table. "My apologies, Master" he replied quickly, leaning forward to quickly pick it up and soon sitting back into the comfort of his chair as he studied the object. Caedyn had gotten too involved in the discussion of everything to remember to pay heed to what it was he was being asked.

"There's nothing really unusual about it?" He answered though not without a small hint of uncertainty, glancing back to [member="Coci Heavenshield"] looking for some sort of assurance or confirmation; "It's a metal, some sort of Silver, I suppose. This is what Midvinter uses instead of credits?" he asked soon after, not accustomed to the small foreign currency. Caedyn almost seemed to be struggling with the task, intent on trying to figure out why he was being asked about the coin, as though there was some hidden aspect to it all, though he couldn't sense anything unusual about it either.

"Whether you are working with Force Light or Art of Small, you need to have a good understanding of the elements you are wanting to infuse or manipulate", she said after he answered her finally. "The coin is durasteel with a silver coating, and you must have knowledge of what properties they both possess", she looked at him with a smile, "No, this is a coin from off world, Midvinter has no currency".

"You mentioned that the Art of Small, operates on a microscopic level which is correct but it can go deeper than that if you truly know what you are dealing with, to a subatomic level. This is a good part of the reason it takes years of constant study to gain a level of skill that can allow you to create or manipulate things". She sat down again, letting him think about the path ahead of him. "But your path you walk starts now and it is achievable". She did not want to discourage the boy, but she did want him to realise that this is a hard road.

"Keep the coin in the palm of your hands, and I want you to set your focus on it through the force. See if you can reach beyond the layer of silver and while you do, pull the light side of the force to your hands", she tapped a finger on her chin as she sat watching him. "Once you think you have achieved this, and the light side is present, make it flow into the coin", she lowered her voice almost to a whisper and continued to speak. "Your body becomes a conduit through which the light side flows. It enters you, fills your presence and leaves you through your will. Always release it Caedyn, the power of the light side is great and even the strongest master cannot hold it for long", before even they become consumed with it.

"If you fail, simply try again".

Caedyn hadn't been taught the finer details of Force Practice such as this, to reach so far within the very material of an object, to search it and discover through the force what sort of metal or fabric it was...-[member="Coci Heavenshield"] wasn't kidding, to find these materials and study them, to learn what defines and separates them from others would take years. It was much more complex than he had thought, and perhaps he had gotten ahead of himself, rushing into things hoping that he could make these powerful artifacts sooner than was realistically possible...

This was however, something that he had set his mind to achieving; Not to mention that with the training required, this would certainly be something to set him apart and offer the Jedi a unique and rare talent from what he had understood thus far. To learn from the very Masters of Alkahest, The Art Of The Small and Force Light; Caedyn was relieved and even felt honored to have been accepted as a student in these practices by [member="Phylis Alince"] and Master Heavenshield, herself.

"I understand, Master" he replied, Coci having once more reminded him of the effort required for such a practice. Both of these skills were above and beyond the general abilities taught to Jedi as far as he had experienced. They were more of a special field of focus rather than the more common saber forms or telekinesis that was studied by every Padawan and his pet frog. He'd been given a reality check, and he had indeed taken it in, but that hadn't deterred him from committing to the learning and study that would be required of him.

Closing his eyes, his hands came together, placing palm against palm with the coin in between and lacing his fingers whilst he sought to fall into meditation. Slowing his breathing to an even pace, inhaling through the nose and out through the mouth, he continued to repeat this until his shoulders relaxed and his mind drifted for a time, his concerns and thoughts being released to the environment that felt so much lighter, as though he were there in the room without a body but simply a consciousness able to travel through the walls if he so desired.

Instead, his will brought his attention to the small circular object within his hands, looking passed the skin flesh and bone of his palms to view the coin itself, within the minds eye. The small coin felt cold on the outside, and though impressions had been etched into the sides, there were no traces of rough corners or jagged imperfections, perhaps worn over the years or otherwise evidence of a well practiced craft. It was however, the purpose of this exercise to look deeper, to pass the outer-layer and look to the very molecular structure of the object, and this required further time and patience. Caedyn understood that this could be done, but he had never succeeded in doing so before. His brows furrowed subconsciously as he tried to retain his focus, tracing the small curves and recesses within the coin, seeking some way of breaching the physical.

To imbue something with the Force, meant focusing on an object, most often in it's construction and channeling the force itself within. To try to do this with his mind, his consciousness against a fully in-tact object, even one as small as a coin wasn't quite the same thing.

The boy caught on quickly when he set his mind to the task, she could feel the light side of the force pulling his direction and through his body to the coin. His searching was proving good to start off with, most student struggle. It is best where there is a fundamental knowledge of the material you work with, the process moves more quickly but that will come in time and training and personal study. His probing was not going deep which she fully expected, but all her needed now was a push to start.

"Allow the light side to flow through you and into the coin", it did not matter at this point if he succeeded to imbue the coin entirely or deeply but she wanted him to at least try, even if only the surface held a touch of the force. This was an exercise in Force Light after all, Art of Small is something entirely more demanding.

Coci stood up silently and moved over to Ceadyn sitting next to him. Her hands reached out and gently placed her palms over his hands, one on the bottom, the other the top. She did not touch them not wanting to startle the boy and besides there was no need. The light side of the force began to fill her gently and flow from the living force around them both, through her to Ceadyn adding to his energy and power within it all. He would feel the presence of her, not only her closeness but the presence of her power.

"Keep going", she whispered and giving him the strength to believe he could. The coin would start to feel hot in his hand, but it would not hurt if he was pure of heart to the light side.

[member="Coci Heavenshield"]'s presence had been there from the beginning, Caedyn able to feel her through his sensory abilities which had become much more subconscious and instinctive these days since his early years in training; yet as she neared him and despite not wanting to disturb his practice, the power she harnessed and the strict control she held over the Force was unmistakable and made his efforts seem almost juvenile.

The young man's anxiety however was a hurdle that he needed to get passed, swallowing his pride and pushing these emotions deeper, ignoring his concerns for the sake of the practice itself. His concentration renewed, he focused solely upon the coin and willing every ounce of control he had upon the Force into the small rounded alloy. Heat beginning to emanate from the small object in the palms of both hands, Coci adding to his own and causing the practice to be strengthened, all the while Caedyn doing his utmost to take account of the change in the coin's physical structure, wanting to be able to duplicate the practice on his own in order to better himself in the days that would follow. [member="Phylis Alince"] had told him that this would be years worth of training, just as Coci herself had told him.

The coin continued to grow hotter, and much to his surprise Caedyn felt nothing from it except the power that was being stored within. The coin becoming a beacon of positive energies, filled with the light of the force and giving it an aura visible to the eye. Caedyn's brow furrowed in concentration as he did his utmost to fill it with as much light as he could, finally coming to the conclusion that the practice was finished and that they had been successful. Together.

Opening his eyes, he looked down at the coin in his hands, though he remained silent. Truth be told, he wasn't entirely certain how he felt about the fact he'd been given help to achieve this. He'd need to double his efforts in the privacy of his own time, if he were to get anywhere in the art of light alchemy.

"Well done Caedyn", she stopped her flow of the force. Coci walked back to her seat and sat opposite him, with a smile. "How do you feel?", she asked knowing that such an exercise is draining of an individual, the use of the force in this manner can exhaust the person and time is needed to recover. Just like when using any force ability, it is not limitless simply because the person is limited. That would be enough for today regarding practice, he would need to rest up and come back at his lessons tomorrow.

"You know when I first met Master Alince she had already spent years developing this ability, and even then she had to ask for help", she grinned sensing the young mans eagerness to learn all this by himself. He had to learn the lesson that he can't do everything on is own, and there is strength in asking for help when needed. A time will come when he will be able to preform abilities that wont require it, but with ambitious endeavours, that is best done in partnerships.

"Not every Jedi is strong in everything". Her brow raised as she answered his thoughts.

"Before we begin again tomorrow, I want you to go to the library and study the properties of the metals that make up that coin", she pointed to his palm. "You have to begin a study of elements, not just metals but anything you wish to manipulate. It is especially important when we come to the learning of Art of Small". Coci stood and brushed down her robes, before starting for the door.

"Go grab something to eat, before you turn in", she said although her day was not yet over, there was work to do in her office before she would head home to Fridheim for the evening. "May the force be with you".
