  • Description: The Uruk are a coalition of three main tribes: the superior Urdr, the numerous yet cowardly Vaettr, and the puny yet cunning Skrolkr. After millennia spent warring between themselves, the unexpected arrival of the Duergar forced them to combine their efforts under one undisputed Warchief. They dwell deep underground, inhabiting much of the globe without any surface-dweller being the wiser.

  • Hair colour: Black, greying with age.
  • Distinctions:
    • Urdr: Tallest and strongest of the three tribes, Urdr typically assume the role of commanders and form the elite backbone of any warband. They are cruel and aggressive, considering their punier cousins as beneath them and will take every opportunity to torment them for their physical limitations. Their weakness lies in their scarcity, as they could not possibly field enough armies to challenge the Under-Realm by themselves. They are also less nimble and dextrous than their lesser due to their size.
    • Vaettr: The most common of the three, the Vaettr boast the largest and most diverse tribe. Generally shorter than the average human without sacrificing physical strength, they are considered the weakest in intelligence and morale, easily routed by inflicting enough casualties or by eliminating their commanders.
    • Skrolkr: The shortest and weakest physically, Skrolkr are no taller than human children but possess a brutally cunning mind. Whereas the Urdr are unmatched battlefield commanders and tacticians, Skrolkr are masters of ambushing tactics and stealth. They are also the most creative of the bunch, always thinking of new insidious ways to torture their prisoners of war. Their small stature and agility allow them to scale walls and crawl across ceilings alike.
    • Note: There are no female Uruk, nor children; they are not born from a womb and in need of nurture for years but are instead bred in pits of fungal mucus found in the deepest crevasses, entering the world as full-sized adults.
  • Races:
    • Urdr
    • Vaettr
    • Skrolkr

    • Can be found anywhere across the globe, living deep underground.
    • Bred as adults from the start, requiring no time to grow.
  • Urdr Tribe:
    • Physical strength on par with Valkyri or Duergar, far above that of average humans.
    • Commands the greatest fear and respect from the other tribes and is seldom backstabbed.
    • Greatest of the three in warfare and tactics.
    • Best duellers.
  • Vaettr Tribe:
    • Largest tribe, able to field the largest armies and swarm enemy positions with sheer manpower.
    • Above average physical strength, though not at the level of Urdr.
  • Skrolkr Tribe:
    • Experts in stealth and ambushing tactics.
    • Superhuman agility, capable of scaling walls and crawling across ceilings.
    • Creative and unabashed torturers.
Weaknesses:
  • General:
    • Weak morale across the board, unless under strong leadership and outnumbering their opponents.
    • Possess zero knowledge of the surface world, having never witnessed it.
    • Technologically inferior.
    • Vulnerable to bright light, easily blinded by sunlight.
    • Savage and barbaric with few cultural elements.
    • Rife with backstabbing and betrayal.
  • Urdr:
    • Smallest tribe, easily overrun without the aid of the other two.
    • Arrogant due to their imposing stature, thus lacking in foresight.
  • Vaettr:
    • Weakest morale of the three.
    • Dull-witted even amongst fellow Uruk.
    • Rush headlong into battle without thought of strategy.
  • Skrolkr:
    • Physically weaker than the average human.
    • Poor frontline fighters.
CULTURE
  • Diet: Carnivorous; will feed on any living creatures they come across, including the giant rats, spiders, and bats native to the underground. Will not hesitate to engage in cannibalism should no other option be available to them, and will happily feast on any Duergar captives.
  • Communication: The Uruk are a semi-feral species, relying on snarls, grunts, and hisses to convey emotions or to communicate base desires such as hunger or hostility. For more advanced instructions or conversations, they speak a bastardised form of Basic with heavy use of abbreviation and local slang. The level of eloquence differs heavily from one individual to another, with some lacking the intelligence to even form a sentence.
  • Technology level: Woefully lacking in natural resources due to dwelling deep underground, everything the Uruk create or build lacks any aesthetic value whatsoever and is only there to perform the most basic of functions. Weapons are crude and simplistic, but no less effective at bashing skulls or tearing flesh apart. Armour is ugly and barely held together, fashioned from bits of leather and chainmail scavenged from fallen foes as each Uruk is expected to piece together their own equipment as they go along. Leaders get first dibs at any loot, meaning they usually sport the finest armour and weapons of the lot.
  • Religion/Beliefs: The Uruk are a monotheistic people, with each tribe claiming to be descendants of Udûn, considered the original Uruk. The only thing setting the tribes apart is their depiction of Udûn; for instance, to the Urdr he was a great and mighty warrior without equal, whereas the Skrolkr depict him as the most cunning mastermind there ever was. The shamans of each tribe venerate him as the Dark Father from whom all others spawned, simultaneously denouncing their rival tribes' interpretations. Since the arrival of the Duergar and the realisation that the tribes needed to come together in order to stand against them, each Warchief has assumed the name of Udûn.
  • General behaviour: Uruk are notoriously treacherous creatures, always looking for ways to save their own skin and come out on top. They see their brothers as competition and potential threats. Though there are rare occasions of genuine kinship between fellow Uruk, these should be regarded as the exception rather than the rule. Only an external threat, such as the Duergar, will rally them to a common cause. As they dwell deep beneath the earth and have never witnessed sunlight, they are considered a nocturnal species. With no females or children to care for, each specimen is born a warrior and lives only for the fight, shouting curses and laughing maniacally as they charge into battle. They are foul, loud, and obnoxious, lacking any trace of honour or humanity.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
There is no recorded origin of the Uruk, where they came from or when they first appeared. It is believed that all Uruk stem from one common ancestor and that their Dark Father, Udûn, was one of said proto-Uruk, but their initial creation remains a mystery. Born not from a female's womb and raised as children, Uruk are instead grown inside what they call "Breeding Pits"; pools of slime and mucus secreted by a special type of fungus found only in the deepest recesses of the underground which then reacts to the heat of the planet's core, and perhaps its Force Nexus as well, to create these crude lifeforms. It is because of this unusual birthing method that they are able to replenish their numbers so easily, as well as the reason why they've come to infest most of the known underworld, with the Duergar Under-Realm being their sole challenger.

By the time the Duergar, commonly known as Dwarves, tunnelled their way down through the earth and reached the vast chasms far below, the Uruk had already dwelled there for untold millennia. Before their arrival, the three tribes were at constant war with each other, each vying for total control of the intricate tunnel network and what few natural resources there were. Mostly, however, they fought each other for sport. When the Dwarves suddenly appeared and built their vast Holds on their ancient battlegrounds, each tribe would attempt to oust the intruder. Hordes of Uruk, regardless of tribe, fell to the well-equipped Duergar and their artillery, unable to break through their defences.

The monumental decision to combine their efforts was made after centuries of individual failure, where the leader of each tribe met for the first time under the banner of diplomacy. Together they chose one formidable warrior to become the first Warchief, given supreme authority and whose task it was to coordinate the three tribes in taking on the Under-Realm. When the first Dwarf Hold eventually fell, he was hailed as the Dark Father reborn and bestowed the name of Udûn, a tradition carried on by every subsequent Warchief.

Millennia later, the Under-Realm has effectively been reduced to its capital of Dwarrowdelf along with a handful of small fortresses and military outposts - a testament to the tenacity of the Uruk when united behind strong leadership. It remains to be seen whether the Surface may one day come to the rescue of the Below.
