Strengths:
  • The Juggernaut: With weapons, armor, and shields all packed in front, the Tidebringer can hammer its way through most objects, even ships many times its size.
Weaknesses:
  • Not Quite Unstoppable: With the exception of a single twin turbolaser turret, the entire battery of the Tidebringer is in a fixed forward mount. That, combined with a limited AA suite, not to mention limited maneuverability, means the Tidebringer is vulnerable to being surrounded and overwhelmed by smaller ships.

DESCRIPTION
A distant relative of the venerable Scythe-class Battlecruiser and the ShaShore-class Frigate, the Akerufen-class Assault Frigate was thought to exist on paper only. Designed in a period of relative peace and prosperity in the galaxy, it was simply another casualty of the knowledge and practice lost during the 400 year darkness. Or so it was thought. A salvage mission discovered an unknown ship design in a insignificant system near Mon Calamari. Initial investigations proved the clear Mon Calamari hand in the construction of the ship, and it was a fairly trivial matter then to tow the ship to its planet of origin and dig up the old design schematics. The salvagers got a hefty purse from the Shipyards as thanks, and the Mon Calamari got a ship straight of the dark ages.

Experimental features abound. The main battery is a set of twelve huge turbolasers, and six nearly as large Ion cannons, set into the heavily armored prow, on fixed gimballed mounts recessed into the ship. The weapons are significantly more powerful than even a heavy turbolaser, and feature high precision, with every grouping of three cannons able to strike nearly the same spot on a ship, with up to nine striking in a very close grouping (each half of the prow). In tests, this was supposed to be able to punch through weak points in armor or shields and cripple a target vessel internally. As one might expect, the targeting system for the Akerufen is appropriately advanced. A battery of four heavy energy torpedo launchers rounds out the prow armament, and gives the ship some long-range striking power.

Defenses follow a traditional Mon Calamari design, with distributed, overlapping shield generators. The major notable departure is the presence of Bronzium-Quadanium Steel alloyed armor plating, giving the ship its distinctive bronzeish sheen and providing excellent durability. Conversely, defensive armament is fairly slim. Four unusual rotary laser cannons provide the main source of anti-fighter weaponry, an effective design but vulnerable to being eliminated and rendering the ship nearly defenseless. Four quad laser turrets and a pack of antimissile octets are the only other dedicated anti-fighter guns, though a set of missile launchers is set ventrally.

Given the emphasis on weaponry and shields, the ship is remarkably fast. It suffers in maneuverability however, and features no hanger and little in the way of creature comforts. It is a cramped, uncomfortable vessel with what little free space it has devoted to power conduits and heat exchangers. The designers evidently acknowledged the critical maneuverability flaw however, because they built in a rather unusual system to help compensate.
Two large engines are built on the outboard wings of the prow, which can be turbocharged and fired individually, along with a number of directional thrust modifiers on the large tail, to allow the ship to conduct a 'crazy ivan' and spin roughly 180 degrees in a shockingly short period of time and space. This process drains the power and fuel for those engines and while it doesn't dramatically affect ship performance overall, it takes a long time to recharge, usually at least 30 minutes. Technical notes pulled from the archives reported that the engineers assumed it would only see use once in any given battle.

It is impossible to know what the latest iteration of Mon Calamari Shipyards intended to do with the prototype vessel, because it disappeared from their yards as the Sith-Republic war edged into the system. To the surprise of all, when it next turned up it was bearing a Rebellion flag and sporting the name Tidebringer. It is a fearsome but irreplaceable weapon in their hands, a fast frigate designed to blow apart larger ships, exactly the sort of thing hit and run raiders need. When the nascent Rebellion fled Sith encroachment on Centares, the Tidebringer and some other vessels were incorporated into the fleet of the Isaris Partisans, and eventually became one of the early warships of the Sanctuary Systems Liberation Army.

Ultrachrome-Bronzium Alloy Armor Plating
Per the current Restricted Materials list, the Ultrachrome will necessitate having a Tier IV+ company or a major faction as a manufacturer to use. If you do not currently have one of these available, you may add Lucerne Labs as a subcontractor if you so desire.

This looks like it's one rating over. Was the idea that most of the anti-capital ship firepower being forward only would offset the additional rating for balance purposes?

While I appreciate the offer, it doesn't quite work lore wise because this ship is supposed to be a pre-gulag plague relic. At any rate, the Ultrachrome was largely to add some cosmetic character, I've removed the mention.

You are correct that the forward-facing capital focused weaponry is meant to offset the rating discrepancy. I can expand on that, if necessary.

Please, if you'll clarify in the weaknesses area that this only has forward-facing weapons, we'll be golden.
