The Monster
Monster
Sergei was sitting on the transport relaxing in his chair on his way out if the republic controlled systems. He'd hitched a ride on a freighter on the way out of his last job. The last fight of his life. He sighed as he relaxed in his seat for the first time in months. He couldn't believe the things he'd seen in his first months of exposure to the galaxy. He had seen people perform magic feats, fight with laser swords, watched armies fight with high tech weapons and armor and ships that he'd only dreamed of before. And now he'd seen a lot, a lot more than he'd ever thought he would. He'd fought battles with armies and while he'd been impressed by a few, he turned down an NCO's appointment within their army as he knew he had to make his own way.
He looked down at his still armored hands and wondered. The last mission, the one at the temple with the rookie saber wielder and the cultists, and the poor souls that had died needlessly to buy them time. Good men had died because they weren't well trained enough, nor had the equipment to pull off the mission without dying needlessly. He needed more behind him. He needed a team. He bought passage on a cargo freighter as he didn't know what expensive was, nor what his future costs might be, even though the Republic had paid him well. The ship was simple, had a crew of about thirty, and most of the people here were actually workers. Sergei enjoyed the peace and quiet offered by the lack of people talking around him, or really anything happening around him. It was one of his pet peeves to be around needless noise, especially not on the battlefield. He enjoyed the quiet punctuated by the rhythmic thrums of the hyper drive and Hypermatter reactor, the walking of people as they went about their duties in a time after time manner of just going to work and getting the job done. He enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of it all, and for once in his life he knew rest. He sat back and enjoyed it as it was a rarity he'd not known for several months. He wondered what lay in store for him in Confederacy Space. What new wonders would he experience and what new things he would see. He hadn't had much time to himself in Republic Space, maybe now he'd get some time to experience things as a civilian. There was a laugh, that would probably not happen.
