The Start of Something New

Hands clasped behind his back.

Another ship burned up on the outside of the viewing window. The crew of the vessel looked relaxed and calm. This was just another day to the young men, tearing through vessels like butter daily. This was routine, something that each and everyone of the young men had been trained to do. They had been trained to wake early, work all day and sleep late. They were true soldiers.

The captain looked through the window again.

He was a young man, potentially a teen. He had the blue skin and black hair, meaning he looked like any other Chiss, except he carried himself like a trained soldier. He had been training for a while, since he was a kid. Chiss matured much faster than many other species, they became soldiers and naval officers much quicker than many other species because of that fact.

Kemm'orak'crotho kept his eyes on the ships outside.

They weren't done just yet. Two more ships still floated outside. The engines on the two ships had been disabled ages ago yet they continued to fire upon their attacker. The Chiss kept calm and composed, they knew exactly what to do. Kemm'orak'crotho knew exact what to do. He was calmly relaying orders to the crew, telling them exactly where he needed them and what he needed them to do.

Another ship burned up.

The guns on the frigate aimed at the final enemy vessel. The Chiss were prepared to carry out their orders to the death, and death seemed unlikely. The battle had seen every enemy take damage and the Chiss frigate take minimal damage. The crew on the bridge, the navigation officers especially deserved a large amount of credit for all the work they had done to avoid severe damage.

The final frigate burned up.

The lights came up, screens going black. They had passed their final exam with minimal damage. The simulated bridge was bussing with activity, congratulations being passed around. Two different bridge crews congratulated their captain, congradulated Kemm'orak'crotho. The young chiss relaxed just slightly, not surprised they had passed but glad they had passed non the less.

He turned around, breathing out softly.

Admiral Mitth'orn'eruod stood with other members of the CEDF command, his crimson eyes focused on the crew partaking in simulations through the reflective transparisteel before him. There were murmurs from other officers around, mostly positive observations with one or two voices of negativity. Those few were the jealous ones, the Admiral suspected, if their own personal career highlights were any indication. The youth in command of the bridge crew, one Kemm'orak'crotho, had been under close scrutiny for several weeks now, as high ranking officers pooled together the brightest possible recruits for fleet deployment in commanding positions. Presently there were half a dozen CEDF recruits that were being headhunted by Captains, Commodores, Vice Admirals and Admirals... and from indications, Kemm'orak'crotho was one of the top choices.

Mitth'orn'eruod looked down to the observation screens, replaying the simulation. He watched the holovid in fast forward, his quick eyes taking in the highlights, taking note of the potential for improvement in the few instances Kemm'orak'crotho could improve, but otherwise was very content with overall performance. Being one of the highest ranked at the training facility, and in command of an entire fleet, Mitth'orn'eruod was able to make a decision first, and truly it came down to one of two individuals he felt were appropriate to what he hoped to achieve with the CEDF.

"I will meet with Kemm'orak'crotho," Mitth'orn'eruod said as he turned to the training coordinator. "Bring him to the officer's mess hall. I would meet him alone. Thank you, Lieutenant."

Mitth'orn'eruod walked from the observation room, making a brisk pace through the clean sterile corridors of the facility. Several sets of biometrics later, he stood within the officer's mess, and watched as others within removed themselves, leaving the room open and empty. Turning to face the entrance where Kemm'orak'crotho would appear through, Mitth'orn'eruod placed his gloved hands at the small of his back and waited...

He licked his lips.

The training co-ordinator had collected him as he stepped from the simulation. He hadn't been told why he was being seperated from the group, instead he was expected to remain extremely silent. That was never explicitly said, of course, but it was heavily insinuated from the body language of the training co-ordinator. He didn't mind being silent, he was used to being quiet until something happened when he needed to use his words.

The duo walked down the corridor slowly.

The Officer's Mess was ahead of them. They both stood outside, both at ease. The co-ordinator nodded towards the young Chiss and gestured towards the door. Kemm'orak'crotho blinked, pushing the door open and walking in slowly. He kept his pace exact, a true soldier. In front of him sat a man he recognised, a man who he had heard stories about. He was an Admiral within the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet. He was his superior.

Kemm'orak'crotho stood at attention.

"Ch'abcesit, vah tat ch'eo ch'at'obart?"

He nodded, then spoke again in basic. The same sentance, translated from Cheunh, his mother tongue.

"Admiral. You requested my presence?"

Mitth'orn'eruod watched the other Chiss officer, crimson eyes leveled, face neutral. Neither a flicker of expression or indication of thought passed from the Admiral, who was said to be one of the hardest Chiss to read physically, emotionally or biologically. Even his blood flow, heart rate and composure remained stoic and unchanged by factors around him. The reason was simple: practice. Mitth'orn'eruod had always been had keen observational skills, able to deduce an individual's identity by something as seemingly trivial as walking gait. As a result, knowing what others looked for, or expected to see, allowed the Admiral to determine what - if anything - he gave away, when he sought to.

"Kemm'orak'crotho," Mitth'orn'eruod said simply, his voice low, as he motioned to the seat opposite. "Your academy record has been impressive. You are among the highest rank potential officers to recruit into a command. You have completed numerous simulations to near perfect result. You possess leadership qualities, you have taken academic lessons to heart, and you have established yourself as a prime candidate for service placement..."

Not too dissimilar to Mitth'orn'eruod's own past, in truth, though with some less subtle differences.

"I, and others in command, have heard and seen much, all of your strengths and accomplishments, they are very impressive," The Admiral narrowed his eyes, as he raised an eyebrow. "You have worked hard, and achieved much. Yet...

"In your own time, what are your weaknesses and shortcomings? Be honest. I will know."
