Avin Starfire
Character
The Starfire Chronicle, Chapter one. Cricks Candidate.
Hawken Crick was not a young man anymore, he felt this now everyday as his youth seemed to edge further and further away to be replaced with grey hair and more pains let alone his own reflection in the mirror having changed from a once staunch build to that of decades of hard work and adverse weather conditions. His mind often dwelled on his mortality and other grand topics of the such and yet here he was again staring out over the clouds of the coruscant cityscape. The elevator seemed to make every speeder and other building pass like a blur as the hyperlift continued to accelerate upwards ever climbing through the seemingly never ending number of levels of the Jedi temple. Its hulking spire still lent its shadow to most of the city and it was the third time he had come to make this route however the first since his promotion to the rank of master. A sense of bitterness still clung to his thoughts as he ran over the almost 20 years that he was withheld from progression due to his supposedly “radical” techniques. Just the thoughts had run his temper up as the whine of the lift came to a halt and the doors separated to reveals a large stone corridor leading to an archway that seperated the lift shafts from that of the main complex of the Jedi temple.
His footsteps seemed to create and echo as he swiftly made his way up the empty stairwells and through a variety of doors and passages only being contested for sound upon the meet of another roaming Jedi with whom respectful glances were exchanged. Crick had been used to the dirty looks from council members but still found solitude in the respect of those younger than him and those that had fought alongside him yet still his popularity waned in the deep core of this most ancient order yet his reason for return here trumped his own care for politics or relationships.
He continued for another few corridors before eventually finding the large stoned carved entrance guarded by marble sentinels from another era, their swords and ancient armours etched into the white stone, their eyes keeping a never dying watch over all those that would seek refuge within. As Hawken approached the door he came face to face with two very much alive sentinels in the form of temple guards, recognising his black cloak, tied up hair and monolid green eyes. The door swung open on its hinges enough to let his frame to pass through, the doors creaked shut as he continued further into the room where he was met with the all too familiar sight of various other jedi such as himself aligned within a designate space along with a variety of higher ranking Jedi that would oversee the process that was about to take place. Crick looked over the faces and recognised one or two, they were all here for the same reason and that reason being that they were to take on padawans whilst not having selected their own a pairing process it was called although to Crick it felt closer to the way a group of parents may chose to adopt a child instead of train one. The whole ordeal had not sat well with him, a council proposal to increase Jedi numbers for their own military strength had been passed by the senate and restrictions on the entrance has been slackened to new lows and yet here he was, coming to a request that he could of turned down.
Hawken joined the others and was met with a mixture of looks from the soon to be teachers and overseeing masters alike yet he had barely made it to the group before a familiar face stepped out in front of them and hushed the group from their talk.
Jenson Prague was not a particularly memorable figure whether in terms of appearance, personality or achievement, and yet that is what made his ability to orchestrate and administrate so strong. For these reasons he had little to be disliked for as the quiet type and always un-confrontational. He stepped forward from the crowd and spoke.
“Well now that we are all here I would like to thank you for making any journeys that may have taken place or caused your to stop your works however today is of most importance. Now i'm sure you were all informed of the policies that have been brought into effect in the past months by the senate to increase the number of recruitment into the ranks of our order due to the rather unpleasant times that we live in.”
The balding Jedi allowed his words to have their intended effect before continuing his speech.
“So the process will be very simple, each of the candidates will be brought into the center of the chamber and questioned as per the normal selection process and if any one of you desires to take one of the candidates into your tutor then a second stage will be arranged between yourselves and the possible padawans. So if you would like to take your seats we will start to bring the first candidates through shortly. Thank you.”
His hand gestured the group towards a semi circle of pod like seats that adorned the edge of the chamber floor space. Each of the furniture pieces had a datapad placed on the seat itself for each designate user of the chair.
Crick took his position at the second to most left seat and picked up the datapad before sitting down. He thumbed the button on the side and the screen flashed to life with a vibrancy of different images and scrolling of text before it returned to a waiting screen. When he looked up again Master Prague had made his way to another smaller side door and was talking with two of the other overseeing masters before opening the door and stepping inside to disappear around a corner further down, Crick’s vision was then cut off as the door was shut once more. They must have continued to wait another maybe ten minutes before the door opened again and yet this time he returned with a young Nautolan female no older than maybe five or six and looking extremely nervous after being guided to the center of a large room surrounded by the people that may change her life forever.
The process took maybe another 10 minutes as she was asked a set list of generic questions and then took any further questions or queries that were asked by the seated Jedi’s, upon the end of questioning a few minutes took place for the masters to decide their opinions of the child and whether they fit well with the master’s methods. For Crick she had been too passive, he needed a student without fear of the social situation or with enough fire in their stomach to burn a house down.
The next few hours seemed to almost drift by to Hawken. While some of the young candidates were to be later taken on by the other masters within the room many seemed to lack any real talent with the force and would more than likely be sent to aid with the agricultural efforts of the Jedi. This continued for maybe four hours, Hawken had marked a few of interest but again he found none of them particularly standout. Then the boy came out of the large double doors. He seemed almost a year or two older than the rest and his expression showed a maturity even further than that. The child’s eyes held a depth of intensity that Master Crick has struggled to find in colleagues of his age. The eyes that had seen things many would not see in their whole careers as Jedi Knights and furthermore Hawken felt something else, it was like a shot of adrenaline had spiked through his sense in the force. The boy’s mere untame presence in the force gave Hawken a shock to the system… This would be the one.
The children had been taken back to their quarters where they would either be called one by one to meet the Jedi Master who would guide them on their path of learning for the next decade of their life and on the aventures and journey to Knighthood. The others would sit and feel the sense of dread build as they would find no such adventure but instead be reassigned to agricultural temples with which their force sensitivity would work on nurturing plant and crop growth in regions of food production.
Avin Starfire sat on his bunk and threw a small ball he had constructed out of spare paper and rubberized bands. The ball would hit ceiling above his bunk and fall back down into his palm. Other children sat around idly or spoke to one another. Avin didn't know anyone else in the room but for one correllian girl who had already been called up and out to go on her way. He had not had the easiest path to get here but he remembered what the Jedi had told him whence found on the streets of Kuat.
“Boy, you have a power inside of you that may change your life forever. If you take this opportunity with both hands and embrace it then you will never end up back here.”
It had seemed strange at the time but after having the Jedi explained to him on his way to Coruscant Avin had soon come to accept their ways and what they stood for, they were the last defence against the darkness that seemed to lurk and lap at all that is good in the galaxy.
It became like almost clockwork. The calling that was. Each call would be the same, another Child’s name and to whom they were being assigned. It seemed to go on and on, each time his ears would prick up and his mind whizz and whir to whether or not he was going to be picked. Each time Avin slumped back down and threw his ball in disappointment. He didn't feel angry as the last of the numbers trickled out. At least not at the Jedi. He knew he was unlikely to picked, he was older and bigger than the other kids. Alas he let the emotions fade as he sat back into his bunk.
There were about four of them left now not including Avin. That was it they were the unwanted ones he thought to himself. He would spend the rest of his life as a farmer as explained on the process. A feeling of deep sadness built up in him for a second over the fact he was missing out on glory and excitement and all the other things that keep an eight year old up at night, however it soon faded. Avin quickly remembered he could still be living in the hives of Kuat or Coruscant and eating out of Trash compactors if not living a life of crime already.
He had all but given up when the final voice came.
“Avin Starfire. Assigned apprentice of Jedi Master Hawken Crick. Come forward.”
End of Chapter one.
