The Starfire Chronicles

The Starfire Chronicle, Chapter one. Cricks Candidate.

Hawken Crick was not a young man anymore, he felt this now everyday as his youth seemed to edge further and further away to be replaced with grey hair and more pains let alone his own reflection in the mirror having changed from a once staunch build to that of decades of hard work and adverse weather conditions. His mind often dwelled on his mortality and other grand topics of the such and yet here he was again staring out over the clouds of the coruscant cityscape. The elevator seemed to make every speeder and other building pass like a blur as the hyperlift continued to accelerate upwards ever climbing through the seemingly never ending number of levels of the Jedi temple. Its hulking spire still lent its shadow to most of the city and it was the third time he had come to make this route however the first since his promotion to the rank of master. A sense of bitterness still clung to his thoughts as he ran over the almost 20 years that he was withheld from progression due to his supposedly “radical” techniques. Just the thoughts had run his temper up as the whine of the lift came to a halt and the doors separated to reveals a large stone corridor leading to an archway that seperated the lift shafts from that of the main complex of the Jedi temple.

His footsteps seemed to create and echo as he swiftly made his way up the empty stairwells and through a variety of doors and passages only being contested for sound upon the meet of another roaming Jedi with whom respectful glances were exchanged. Crick had been used to the dirty looks from council members but still found solitude in the respect of those younger than him and those that had fought alongside him yet still his popularity waned in the deep core of this most ancient order yet his reason for return here trumped his own care for politics or relationships.

He continued for another few corridors before eventually finding the large stoned carved entrance guarded by marble sentinels from another era, their swords and ancient armours etched into the white stone, their eyes keeping a never dying watch over all those that would seek refuge within. As Hawken approached the door he came face to face with two very much alive sentinels in the form of temple guards, recognising his black cloak, tied up hair and monolid green eyes. The door swung open on its hinges enough to let his frame to pass through, the doors creaked shut as he continued further into the room where he was met with the all too familiar sight of various other jedi such as himself aligned within a designate space along with a variety of higher ranking Jedi that would oversee the process that was about to take place. Crick looked over the faces and recognised one or two, they were all here for the same reason and that reason being that they were to take on padawans whilst not having selected their own a pairing process it was called although to Crick it felt closer to the way a group of parents may chose to adopt a child instead of train one. The whole ordeal had not sat well with him, a council proposal to increase Jedi numbers for their own military strength had been passed by the senate and restrictions on the entrance has been slackened to new lows and yet here he was, coming to a request that he could of turned down.

Hawken joined the others and was met with a mixture of looks from the soon to be teachers and overseeing masters alike yet he had barely made it to the group before a familiar face stepped out in front of them and hushed the group from their talk.

Jenson Prague was not a particularly memorable figure whether in terms of appearance, personality or achievement, and yet that is what made his ability to orchestrate and administrate so strong. For these reasons he had little to be disliked for as the quiet type and always un-confrontational. He stepped forward from the crowd and spoke.

“Well now that we are all here I would like to thank you for making any journeys that may have taken place or caused your to stop your works however today is of most importance. Now i'm sure you were all informed of the policies that have been brought into effect in the past months by the senate to increase the number of recruitment into the ranks of our order due to the rather unpleasant times that we live in.”

The balding Jedi allowed his words to have their intended effect before continuing his speech.

“So the process will be very simple, each of the candidates will be brought into the center of the chamber and questioned as per the normal selection process and if any one of you desires to take one of the candidates into your tutor then a second stage will be arranged between yourselves and the possible padawans. So if you would like to take your seats we will start to bring the first candidates through shortly. Thank you.”

His hand gestured the group towards a semi circle of pod like seats that adorned the edge of the chamber floor space. Each of the furniture pieces had a datapad placed on the seat itself for each designate user of the chair.

Crick took his position at the second to most left seat and picked up the datapad before sitting down. He thumbed the button on the side and the screen flashed to life with a vibrancy of different images and scrolling of text before it returned to a waiting screen. When he looked up again Master Prague had made his way to another smaller side door and was talking with two of the other overseeing masters before opening the door and stepping inside to disappear around a corner further down, Crick’s vision was then cut off as the door was shut once more. They must have continued to wait another maybe ten minutes before the door opened again and yet this time he returned with a young Nautolan female no older than maybe five or six and looking extremely nervous after being guided to the center of a large room surrounded by the people that may change her life forever.

The process took maybe another 10 minutes as she was asked a set list of generic questions and then took any further questions or queries that were asked by the seated Jedi’s, upon the end of questioning a few minutes took place for the masters to decide their opinions of the child and whether they fit well with the master’s methods. For Crick she had been too passive, he needed a student without fear of the social situation or with enough fire in their stomach to burn a house down.

The next few hours seemed to almost drift by to Hawken. While some of the young candidates were to be later taken on by the other masters within the room many seemed to lack any real talent with the force and would more than likely be sent to aid with the agricultural efforts of the Jedi. This continued for maybe four hours, Hawken had marked a few of interest but again he found none of them particularly standout. Then the boy came out of the large double doors. He seemed almost a year or two older than the rest and his expression showed a maturity even further than that. The child’s eyes held a depth of intensity that Master Crick has struggled to find in colleagues of his age. The eyes that had seen things many would not see in their whole careers as Jedi Knights and furthermore Hawken felt something else, it was like a shot of adrenaline had spiked through his sense in the force. The boy’s mere untame presence in the force gave Hawken a shock to the system… This would be the one.

The children had been taken back to their quarters where they would either be called one by one to meet the Jedi Master who would guide them on their path of learning for the next decade of their life and on the aventures and journey to Knighthood. The others would sit and feel the sense of dread build as they would find no such adventure but instead be reassigned to agricultural temples with which their force sensitivity would work on nurturing plant and crop growth in regions of food production.

Avin Starfire sat on his bunk and threw a small ball he had constructed out of spare paper and rubberized bands. The ball would hit ceiling above his bunk and fall back down into his palm. Other children sat around idly or spoke to one another. Avin didn't know anyone else in the room but for one correllian girl who had already been called up and out to go on her way. He had not had the easiest path to get here but he remembered what the Jedi had told him whence found on the streets of Kuat.

“Boy, you have a power inside of you that may change your life forever. If you take this opportunity with both hands and embrace it then you will never end up back here.”

It had seemed strange at the time but after having the Jedi explained to him on his way to Coruscant Avin had soon come to accept their ways and what they stood for, they were the last defence against the darkness that seemed to lurk and lap at all that is good in the galaxy.

It became like almost clockwork. The calling that was. Each call would be the same, another Child’s name and to whom they were being assigned. It seemed to go on and on, each time his ears would prick up and his mind whizz and whir to whether or not he was going to be picked. Each time Avin slumped back down and threw his ball in disappointment. He didn't feel angry as the last of the numbers trickled out. At least not at the Jedi. He knew he was unlikely to picked, he was older and bigger than the other kids. Alas he let the emotions fade as he sat back into his bunk.

There were about four of them left now not including Avin. That was it they were the unwanted ones he thought to himself. He would spend the rest of his life as a farmer as explained on the process. A feeling of deep sadness built up in him for a second over the fact he was missing out on glory and excitement and all the other things that keep an eight year old up at night, however it soon faded. Avin quickly remembered he could still be living in the hives of Kuat or Coruscant and eating out of Trash compactors if not living a life of crime already.

He had all but given up when the final voice came.

“Avin Starfire. Assigned apprentice of Jedi Master Hawken Crick. Come forward.”

End of Chapter one.

Chapter Two. Routine.

10 Years of Age

Avin bolted upright and stared over to the small computer screen adjacent to his small bunk.

05:57

He cursed under his breath as the young boy slid out of the sheets and made his way across the room and disabling the alarm set for 06:00. Avin wasn't fussed about early starts. In fact he quite like the early morning, he like walking around the temple with everyone else still locked in their slumber apart from the few night watchman and others that worked odd hours. The second reason was that back on Kuat his mother had made him get up at a similar time everyday to make the morning journey for clean water and food allowances. He would walk for about two hours just to collect the items before having to lug them home. As hard as it had been he would give up everything he had now just to have her back even for one day.

Padawan Starfire made his bed and washed his face and buzz cut hair in the small basin that made up part of the communal washrooms for padawans within the temple on Coruscant. He slept in a room with eight other younglings like himself. They had come to be quite close but Avin was as per usual the oldest of the lot. Most his age were already further through their training however he had been discovered late. His own training had been hard up to this point, far harder than the others as to catch him up.

He washed and dried himself before moving back into the dorm room. Kasabian Ranaut, a small Twi’lek boy had woken up and sat across on his bunk when Avin came back into the room. The other boy looked surprised to see Avin already starting to fix his exercise garbs on. Yet for Avin it was a daily routine, he would go to see Master Crick in the morning for an hour and a half of physical training before he would change again and then eat breakfast.
The rest of the boys had woken up and grumbled of early starts as Avin made his way out of the door. He waved back to Kasab whom he had spoken to briefly while getting changed. In truth the reason Avin awoke earlier than most was to have access to the facilities in somewhat privacy. It gave him far more time to think when on his own. He would have time to process over the lessons and activities that he had gone through and applied. Most lessons were still done on mass with a dedicated training master whilst his own master attended to work within the temple.

The hallways had filled up some more now, mostly older padawans and knights that were starting to attend their business for the day. Avin made two lefts, a right and another left until he found the gymnasium. The doors opened to reveal a familiar sight of large white walls and lights illuminating equipment of different shapes and sizes. He made his way past weights and a sparring pit to find his master waiting.

“As I make it, you are two minutes early young padawan. You know my rules on timing don't you. If I said be here at 6:30 I mean it, if I meant 6:28 I would have said so. However with all rules, I have consequences for them being broken. On top of your regular 3 laps of the running strip you will add those two minutes of inconsistency and run 5 instead.”

The Jedi master turned from what he was looking at in the distance to face Avin.

“I do this not to be harsh on you boy but out of kindness. If you were to arrive at an ambush point two minutes early you may throw a whole operation down the drain and get yourself killed. In my line of work that is unacceptable and so as I am to treat you with maturity and respect I shall hold you to the same standard. Now you have a minute to warm up and then I will start the clock running. I expect your best effort.”

Avin simply nodded as he started to stretch out. Avin almost wanted to kick himself, he knew the rules that Crick made him go through when they would train. Avin hadn't checked to see if he was early and now he would have to run another two whole laps! This was going to hurt.

Avin made his way out onto the track and started into a light jog. He always found the start the hardest part of all runs. He was young enough and fit enough that the distances didn't trouble him yet finding his rhythm of breathing and speed fast enough to set a good time was always hard to nail. Alas he did so fairly quickly and made his way off on the circuit.

The circuit ran the perimeter of the entire hall within which the PT quarters were based. The track was exactly 400m round. This wouldn't have been bad for most people however the opening run Avin was always pushed to do at a near sprint like pace. His heart rate soon crept up on him and his breathing also. He nailed the first two laps with relative ease and the third at a strong pace. As he crossed the line into his fourth lap Avin could feel the unrelenting pace start to take its toll on his lower calf. It burned for a moment before sinking into a heavier feeling. Never to disappoint Avin felt Crick’s eyes follow him around and picked up his pace again eventually finishing the next two laps. His legs hurt and his lungs were trying to take in lung faster that he could breathe it in.

The rest of the session soon carried on and Master Crick continuously reminded the young Starfire that in order to fight the Sith one must have a healthy body and healthy mind. The force and a lightsaber alone are no match for someone well drilled in the martial ways. Avin and Crick soon made their way to the sparring area. Master Crick had been one of the few in his last generation to master a special form of Saber fighting. Vaapad. He had been trying to teach Avin this way of fighting ever since he had been taken on. He constantly spoke of the two currents that flowed through individuals. Those of light and dark. Crick went on to how Avin how using this link to the darkside can be played for one's own gain within a dual. The master also focused on how a dual was to be far removed from that of fighting. Avin found it almost hard to grasp as the order had always prided itself on honour and integrity yet a true fight according to his master was a vicious affair of brutal factors.

They continued to spar, Avin would make a strike and stab only to be parried or kicked off of his feet the master never relenting to show any sign of weakness towards his young apprentice the rising of intense anger building inside Avin to strike out with more and more passion until stopping him with a firm back hand to the face that knocked the boy down to the floor.

“Do you feel that inside of you padawan, that pulsing of adrenaline fire and lack of remorse. That is the very thing that drives the good to becoming the evil. Anger is the easiest to fall into when facing your enemies and when you eventually do battle with a sith they will try to bring this out of you.”

Avin frowned as he had pushed himself back into a sitting position before interrupting.

“Master, I feel it yet how am I meant to make it go away. Sometimes I can push it down deep but its still there I believe all must struggle with this battle of emotion if that is a Jedi’s duty.”

Cricks faced turned to watch a group of older apprentices start a duel in the next arena down from their own his cold eyes reflected the clashes of blue for a moment before his attention flicked back to Avin.

“Avin many Jedi do repress these feelings and some do so until the day they move on through the force, yet you will know by now that I spent many of my years learning a new form of lightsaber combat that had been lost for some time to the vaults and fallen out of practice in our great order. The form of Vaapad was created not only as a fighting style but also a way of mind. Instead of repressing emotion you are to channel it and expend it in everything you do therefore it never has the chance to affect you as becomes nothing more than a mere resource.”

Avin nodded however at his age still struggled to grasp the concept.

“If I pass nothing else onto you then let it be this way of thinking. It is the truest way for the guardians of democracy such as ourselves to defeat those fallen to temptation.”

Avin had barely recovered from his earlier training whilst sitting to enjoy the first of his meals for the day when he saw a bustle gather attention at the entrance to the dining hall within the Jedi temple of coruscant. He quickly finished the rest of his meal and almost downed the drink in one before running over to the crowd to inquire. He saw his dorm friend Kasab a few paces to his front.

“Hey Kas what is going on out there?”

“I dunno, I heard someone talking of an arrest being made by the temple guards. Something to do with a dark jedi. I'm gonna try and get closer and see.”

Seconds later the boys pushed themselves through the gaps in the bodies of older Jedi that had also gathered to gawk. The boys continued their way to the front until they saw it for themselves. A man in a much darker brown robe and black under vest was being dragged by two temple guards, his left hand seemed to be missing with only a scorch mark in its place.

As the guards came past most of the other apprentices, even the older padawans fell back into the dining hall to avoid being caught by one of the Knights that escorted the man yet Avin stood now alone with his eyes trained on the man and then the Master that followed directly behind him. Hawken Crick, strode past only turning his solemn face to spot Avin at the last second nodding to him to follow the others. Avin nodded in reply but only after noticing that his master’s lightsaber had been drawn to his hand and that his right leg was cut open leaving a burn mark in his robe.

“Av, what is Master Crick doing with a darksider?” Kasab asked as Avin has turned back into the large decorated hall.

“I don't know, but he had used his lightsaber recently by the looks of it and his robe was all torn and burned.”

“Oh, well I hope he is ok. At least your master is really strong to beat a darksider eh. Just unlucky that they ran into each other. Besides I had never seen that other guy before he must have been much older.”

“I guess.” Avin’s mind seemed to wander on the topic before they were rounded up for group training once more.

Chapter 3 l Purpose

His hands still shook every now and then when thinking back to that time. For Master Crick he remembered not the shouts of joy and parades of victories but instead the screams of pain and columns of corpses that had been left. That is why he carried on fighting, that is why he had to destroy the sith, their ways and their followers to its completion. He did not hate them nor did he want to see them suffer, he was simply a realist in the sense of victory. He had lived through a long period of peace that had been brought to ruin by the sith just as they had done time and time again throughout the history of the universe. In his eyes the only way to win this war is not with military alone, but a war of ideological re-order. It all seemed to complex to comprehend.

The older master ran his hands across his face before standing to make his way out of the room. His robes seemed to follow him across the room as he made his way through the door and into another one of the large hallways that adorned the main temple. His time here was coming to an end. Since the incident of which he had found himself at the centre Crick’s prominence within the councils of the Jedi had grown. He was less ostracized as war became more and more of an issue for the republic. Every victory for the Sith allowed for his views to become more accepted. His methods of training were no longer deemed radical but instead looked over by the council and others. Though none of it was without a price.

Avin dropped his stance lower as the training saber came down towards him. The downward repeating strikes of Djem So clashing with the bright blue of his own weapon to send out a sound of hissing and buzzing. His opponent, Nakat Sha, had been a long time peer of Avin’s. They had met about three years ago and ever since a rivalry had spurred the two into competition on the platform of saber dueling.

Avin spun outwards as Sha brought her own weapon up for another attack, his feet gripping once more against the metallic floor of the training room and allowed for a counter strike to break the flow of the battle. He charged forward his weapon pointed forward in a stabbing motion. Nakat had to throw her own balance off for a moment to avoid being caught in the chest by the sudden shift in fighting. Avin’s attacks suddenly became ferocious in their intent, a flurry of seemingly random blows from what could have been 6 different arms crashed like a wave against his opponent. Her switch to a defensive stance saved Sha from the first few, even managing a deflection but the next attack came almost immediately. From her stance the blue light of Avin’s weapon cut through the air leaving a trail of light.

The first blow connected with her leg, the next to her saber arm and then came a blunt force of her rival’s arm that threw her to the ground. As she thumped against the cold surface the weapon on her own hand seemed to roll across the arena floor and the buzzing of her opponents now sat at her chin. Behind its blade the young man that had bested her. His clean shaven face and slightly messy hair all illuminated by the brilliant blue light of his weapon.

“Yield!”

His words were harsh and almost aggressive, his face had yet to break from a look of focus. It made him look much older than his current 15 years of age. She let a gasp of air out and led back onto the mat that separated them from the hard metal floor of the dueling rooms. “Fine I yield!” She said a smile breaking across her face and leaning up again supported by her arms.

Avin let the blade retract into his weapon hilt and spent a few moments staring down at his friend laying on the mat. His mind took a few moments to come to a more calmed state. He seemed to stand for about three seconds before returning to his normal self and a smile coming across his own lips. “Your getting slow my friend!.” he let out as he leaned over to offer her a hand.

She grasped his hand yet before he could start to pull her up she had already yanked his arm and kicked out at the right leg. Avin toppled over onto the mat.

“And you have let your guard down” She said as she pushed herself up to a sitting position next to him. Her brown hair fell against her cheek as the bun keeping it in place had come loose. Her features were still youthful and her eyes a sapphire blue. She elbowed Avin as he lay sprawled out across the crash mat. “I thought the apprentice of Hawken Crick would be able to see that coming!”

Avin rolled onto his side giving her a look and shaking his head. “You really are something else Nakat.” He pushed himself back up to a sitting position and then onto his feet. “Your lucky, your own master didn't catch you pulling that. We all know how Padawan Sha is meant to be the great role model for our academy!” He teased her while picking up his commlink from the bundle of bags in the corner of their dueling chamber. He muttered a curse under his breath.

“I'm real sorry Kat but i've got to go, Hawken just got back into the temple from one of his errands. I’ll catch you around.”

She scoffed and waved as Avin suddenly gathered up his stuff and bolted for the door.

The door to Avin’s dorm room was already ajar whence he rounded the final corner and a small sinking feeling started in his stomach. Crick was going to give him another lecture on focus and personal development. It was always the same thing, Avin would just try and work with the rest of the order or at least his peers and that would not be good enough for Crick. Yet Avin knew the older man was right in the end. He always was, that's why he was a master after all.

“Padawan Starfire, perhaps you would like to explain to me exactly why you think it is ok to be approximately four minutes and thirty three seconds late to an arranged session. If this were to be an opportunity to capture your enemy you would have been too late to even see them let alone try and give chase and what's more is they would be back out into the galaxy to cause more havoc. Now come on get your things together, we have an assignment. At the front...”

Avin’s face showed a state of temporal shock. Had he just heard the man correctly? An assignment at the front? Surely not, he was still a padawan learner he had yet to pass his trials or even face a sith face to face.

“M-Master are we really going to the war front? Am I ready?”

Avin started to gather a bundle of his clothes and items before packing them into a bag.

“Avin, while you seem to lack the state of timing that is desire by a Jedi of the investigators you have shown yourself more than ready within the rest of your abilities and that's without saying the fact that you have been picked up on by members of the high council for your ability with a lightsaber. Now come along we have a long flight if we are to make it to Adega before we are due to report at the front. After all we are still to construct your own lightsaber.”

Avin zipped up the bag and nodded “Of course master I am ready when you are!”

“Then let us be off.”
