After finding a peculiar bit of gem washed up upon the shore, Braze sought out where he could find more and where it came from. Following rumor and half-remembered myth drew him here…

The island lay low against the horizon, a bloom of rose and sea-glass green rising from clear waters. White sand shimmered, speckled with colorful crushed flecks of coral; each step pressed a pale crescent into the shore before the tide smoothed it clean. Inland, trees arched in curves, their trunks sleek and mineral-sheened, bark striated in faint opaline bands.

This had to be the place… he could feel the Force was distant here… muffled and silenced in an odd way, a slow pull and push akin to the crashing waves of the surf… rising, receding, lingering at the edges of his senses. It was harder to make out just why the Force felt so… silent here.

Braze reached, extending his awareness through the Force and found resistance. It felt like an odd sort of pressure.... almost like a muted distortion.... The Force felt distant… hushed… like a tide heard from beneath deep water. It rose and receded in slow, dragging waves, never fully answering his call. Something beneath the island was drinking the current of the Force and diffusing it... bending it inward. The sensation coiled at the edge of his perception.

There was only one way to put his curiosity to rest. He stepped further inland, moving beyond the shoreline and into the quiet jungle ahead.

The salt-thick breeze softened, giving way to something warmer and fragrant, and faintly sweet. It carried a sense of mineral sharpness beneath it.

The trees grew denser the farther he walked. Their trunks curved in deliberate arcs, some bending low over narrow paths. Their bark shimmered faintly with magnificent opalescent striations catching the light in soft pastels: rose, jade, and pale ambers. When the breeze stirred, the leaves chimed faintly against one another. The sound was delicate and soft in tone. Clusters of low-growing moss blanketed the earth in velvety swaths of mint and seafoam green, glowing faintly in the filtered dappled light. Smooth stones lined the path ahead, arranged in patterns too intentional to be natural. Spirals, winding the path ahead.

"Strange... "

The deeper he walked the quieter the Force became and the more alone he felt.

"Strange... "

"You say that like you don't know what's out here."

Seven dropped down from her perch in the trees. Veridia was a strange thing. Sensations she had never felt before drew her in all directions whenever she was on the planet. Yet what drew her here? An eerie lack of those sensations. Negative space. The Force felt dead here. Dead dead, like someone had slit it's throat. She wasn't surprised to see him here of all places.

He certainly wound up where he shouldn't stick his nose. Seven wasn't exactly able to judge him for that. She was starting to snoop more these days.

The young woman let out a sigh, trotting up beside him and past to go in deeper.

"You make a habit of wandering off without your flock?" she asked, though the question hardly had weight behind it. "Better we go as a group in any case..."

She really didn't know why she suggested that. Maybe she was starting to feel ready to apologize...

Maybe not.

Braze perked up hearing a familiar voice and glanced aside spying the odd girl from before. " Yes actually... Ever since I was small I've been running off all on my own. " Braze assured her. "I imagine you've found peace out this way?" Braze asked lightly as he continued down the path. The further they went the stronger the void felt. Up ahead a forest thinned to a volcanic like set of cliffs with odd trees and patches of crystals here and there amidst the rocks... The force felt so odd here... distant in some areas... Gone in others...

"I imagine you've found peace out this way?"

"It's calming," she admitted. "The noise of the Force hasn't been the warm blanket your kind enjoy for me. Maybe that gives me clarity in its absence where others find despair."

Her dark eyes glanced over the strange formations within the trees. They shimmered oddly, with colors that looked like gemstones. As they cleared out to a cliff her eyes shifted back to the distance. Scatterings of stones and far thinner trees. It was a strangely sterile feeling place.

Shockingly cozy. Then again, maybe she just liked the peace and quiet.

"Variation of void stone?" the Evereni suggested as she assessed the various stones.

Braze blinked at how poetic her words sounded and regarded her with an odd sort of look that mad it hard to tell what he was thinking. "I don't think so… Void stone isn't really native to our plane. You've heard of void stone?" Braze asked as he approached a few patches. He crouched, studying the material in silence. "Huh… they're almost like… vibrating." He spoke under his breath. "I suppose it has a similar effect."

Braze reached down and pressed his fingertips firmly against a crystal spike; it snapped free into his hand… "Weird… I can still feel… the Force in some areas here."

"I don't think so… Void stone isn't really native to our plane. You've heard of void stone?"

"Is it?" Seven murmured to herself. "I've not seen enough of the stuff to know."

Someone was playing around with something they didn't understand... or someone got lucky finding the aftermath of someone who did. Seven didn't particularly care though. She regarded Braze's unreadable expression with the same, a face that portrayed nothing. She was... curious, though.

Curious enough that she could recognize it as a weakness.

"I suppose the Force is hard to snuff out entirely," the former assassin decided. "Maybe some other material holds onto it tighter than other things can." She paused for a moment before speaking again. "Seems plausible enough anyways... most things have opposite forces to counteract them..."

He looked over the clearing, eyes tracing the strange trees. "Hmnn…" He studied the peculiar way they grew, around, within, and near the crystals, especially where their sap had seeped over the jagged surfaces and hardened in glassy folds near the roots. "I think this is some kind of… interdependent growth. Not quite symbiotic… more like a mutual adaptation."

"Mutual adaptation..."

Seven stepped forward and reached out, letting the sap run over her finger. She let out an exhale as the Force energy surged through her for a moment. After a period of silence she spoke again.

"I suppose running into you at random for a third time is the universe telling me to apologize," she finally admitted, though her tone remained neutral. "For... using the face of your friend. Clearly that was a... sore point.."

Maybe she was taking too much of the blame there. It wasn't exactly like she had been given many choices. Kalrath had sent her on a mission he probably knew she couldn't handle. It was probably better to make peace and move on from it though. Just so she'd stop thinking about that day. She didn't want to admit that it was taking up much of her productivity.

"I do not wish to be perceived poorly by others for those actions..."

"Hmnn… Apology accepted." Braze said, offering her the crystal.

He moved to gather a few more chunks from the crystalline growths, careful in his selection, unwilling to strip the place bare. He turned each piece in his hand before setting it aside, taking only what felt freely given.

"I think you've come a long way from where you were… and far be it from me to blame you for someone else pulling the strings. I've had enough of people preaching virtue while hiding their own compromises."

Braze spoke as he began collecting fruit from the trees, testing each one with a gentle press of his thumb before adding it to his satchel. From his belt he produced a knife, drawing it along the bark to gather a measure of sap, easing free a few pieces of hardened resin where they clung to the roots.

"Do you like chocolate? My student is quite fond of it… I was thinking of making lava cakes today. You're welcome to join us."

"I... do not eat sweets," Seven answered.

Her words were not dismissive though. They were just... flat. She had never had chocolate before. Her mind stopped for a moment to ponder the words that Braze had spoken. Had she come a long way? All that changed was that she had been cut loose from her handler. It's not like she had changed as a person. If given the chance she would have left long ago.

But maybe she had more power over herself than she though. Maybe it was just the fear that kept her bound...

"This isn't an offering of pity, is it?" she asked, mostly in earnest.

Seven was at least quite sure she didn't want to be taken pity upon like some fragile child.

"That's okay; I won't put sugar in yours if you don't want." Braze chirped in reply, pleased as he gathered his more delicate finds, packing each away in its own small container inside his bag. When that was done, he sought out a young sapling and knelt, working his fingers into the soil to loosen it carefully.

"No… I don't feel sorrow or sadness for you, nor am I looking at you in some condescending way… I'm offering the invitation as a gesture of friendship and kinship. People don't need a reason to be kind to one another."

He brushed the dirt from his hands and glanced back at her, bright and earnest.

"But you should still try a sweet lava cake… even if I only add a little sugar. Maybe top it with sea salt, or caramel… or a side of vanilla ice cream. That would be nice."

"No… not always," Braze said quietly.

"I cut off Ko Vuto Ko Vuto 's arm because I was afraid he was going to kill Zark San Tekka Zark San Tekka . Jedi aren't supposed to have attachments… because attachments lead to fear. And we aren't meant to act from fear."

His gaze drifted, unfocused for a moment, as though the memory stood just out of sight...

"If I'd been better trained… maybe I would have seen another way. Maybe I could have caught his saber instead. Disarmed him without taking anything from him. Perhaps... I should have known better. Perhaps the fault is mine alone."

He drew in a slow breath before letting out a heavy sigh and smiling at her.

"Not everyone makes the right choice when it matters most… Even when the intent is good, harm can still follow. That's the part people don't like to admit."

"Better than not acting at all," Seven noted, her posture slightly sinking for a moment. "Fear can be a cage... Weak people stand in it. Never moving an inch."

She was weak. That wasn't something she could ever say out loud. Not now, anyways. Still, she did feel something she didn't expect: Sympathy. Or maybe it was kinship of sorts. They weren't so different in some regards... at the whims of things left out of their control.

"Thank you for not killing me," she offered, sounding ever-so-slightly less flat.

Maybe death would have been mercy... but Seven didn't really want to die. Maybe there was something in her that hadn't been broken.

"I'm glad I didn't." he said hefting up a little root ball along with the sapling. " If I did who else would I wax poetic with about the woes of the world?" He asked with a smile.
"I practically live in fear... like all the time. It practically dictates all my actions. Guess that makes me a pretty bad jedi huh? "

"Who cares about being a Jedi," Seven huffed, crossing her arms. "We're all wrapped up in a game of who's-who. Jedi, Sith, calm, hate... Maybe we'd all be better off focusing on being people."

Seven had never gotten the chance to be a person. Like truly be a person. She didn't want to just survive. She wanted to live.

"You're... probably better than most in being a good person..." she muttered. "At least you care about something. Not just the push and pull of power..."

Her emotions were finally bleeding through now. It was expectation that drew it out. Seven hated expectations. They weighed on her heart with a pressure that wouldn't let go. Enough of the mask had slipped now that she could let something out. And what was she?

Jealous. Seven was jealous that Braze had something to care about. It was something hard to come by.

Braze burst out laughing and wiped at his eyes, patting his chest as he caught his breath. "Damn right. That's how I feel about all the fuss most of the time. I just want good people around me in general… It's why I'm cultivating the Aerie, a nice place to live in peace with those I like, far away from the roles and regulations of the galaxy."

"That's kind of you to say… I really just care about the people I come across and how well they're doing, if I like them. Kinda selfish in a funny manner."
He mused aloud as he started back along the path, the sapling cradled carefully in hand.

"I have plans for this material… Perhaps you'd be interested in an eye." Braze said, slipping his gloved hand into a pocket and producing a prototype Obscura Oculi, offering it to her.

"I think everyone deserves some freedom, and if that old worm-for-brains isn't giving you space, you can just turn him off… like hanging up a holocall." Braze chirped lightly.
