The Slicer Gambit

As Ar’ekk pulled his pistol, a harsh whisper came from Cassius, “Ar’ekk, don’t-!” before he could so much as lift a finger to prevent the slicer from shooting the chef in the head, the weapon had already been fired. He looked at his old friend from under heavy brows for a moment before Ar’ekk explained that it hadn’t killed him. Cassius’s shoulders relaxed, but only so much. He knew he was telling the truth – life had not exited the chef’s body. For now.

“I’ll make sure no one knows of your involvement here,” Cassius reassured him as he started to make his way back towards their exit. He had heard some scattered news of Ar’ekk’s tragedy, but didn’t know the full story. The Jedi also was not about to ask the slicer about it, since he seemed to be alright for the time being. He could feel it, though – that darkness, the pain of loss, still lingering. For some people, it never went away.

Cassius kept his guard up, his hands raised in a slightly apprehensive position, looking almost like a magician about to perform a trick. Since their path from the roof was pretty straightforward, so too was their line of egress. He stole a quick glance out of one of the floor-to-ceiling windows, marveling at the lights and sounds below. Nice to look at, but definitely not nice to be caught up in.

As his foot hit the last step up the stairs to the door, an overwhelming sense of apprehension and fear overtook him. Something was wrong. Behind him, he could hear the sounds of shuffling footsteps, back towards the hallway with the trophy room. In anticipation, Cassius flung the door to the outside open, quickly running out onto the roof. Just as the door closed behind them, alarms sounded.

He looked to Ar’ekk. Hopefully the Hawk was nearby.

"You're a smart man, Cassius. I won't make that mistake again."

The Hawk was hovering over the roof with its metallic ramp already open to let them inside, screams heard behind their backs alerted them that the security team was aware of what had transpired. Luckily, the duo was fast enough to walk out of there before getting caught in the act and the lockdown still hadn't commenced. Being trapped inside a drug lord's penthouse with some really vital information that belongs to him would be a truly awful experience.

"Come on, let's get out of here!"

Using the Force to jump on the roof, Ar'ekk held himself to the metallic bar above the door and leaned down to offer his old Jedi friend a helping hand and making sure he would make it on board and not down who knows how many flights downwards. Hopefully he'd be smart enough to not look down and avoid getting dizzy simply thinking of how fearful falling down would be.

Their mission was a success at least. Right?

Cassius leapt for his friend, outstretching his arm to reach. He pulled himself up and flipped over to right himself in one swift motion, his feet securely finding the ramp of the Ebon Hawk. His hand instinctively went to the bag he was carrying to make sure nothing had fallen out or was damaged by the pouring rain. Luckily, everything seemed to be there.

Looking down one last time as the ramp closed back up, he could see the door to the roof burst open. Those guys weren’t messing around.

Soon enough, however, they were well on their way, the rain pattering against the metal hull as they soared through the air. Sitting down in one of the refurbished leather seats, Cassius sighed. Unhooking his bag, he rummaged through it to see just how much he’d gotten away with. Everything he needed, essentially.

“What did you grab?” Cassius asked his friend, wondering if their escapade had been as fruitful for his slicer friend as it had been for him.
