The Silent Stick Together {Katar}

Adding her blanket to the pile, Rin sat down next to Kat. Next she quietly pulled out a hair band and proceeded to pull those long pink locks into a bun. It was easier to rest when you didn't have a bunch of fluff covering your eyes. Briefly she wondered if her companion thought the same thing. Probably not. Most people weren't as picky as she was about how things have to be when one is working. Though rest is the opposite of work, isn't it? Eh, she's a peculiar kid. For example, when she noticed that her knee was touching Kat's, a rather large blush spread onto her face. Had this happened with anyone else she probably wouldn't have reacted. Yet for some reason the warmth made her cheeks turn red.
It was a humorous sight.

Katar's curiosity deepened when Rin blushed. Was she embarrassed? If so, of what? Then she noticed that the tips of their knees were just barely touching. Partially understanding, Katar adjusted her legs so that she was sitting on her knees and not touching Rin in any manner. she remembered that Rin had bin hurt earlier that day. Concerned, she leaned toward Rin and began sniffing her a bit. She met the girl's eyes to see if she was feeling any pain and merely masking it.

For a moment she felt bad about 'making' Kat move. But then she was a little busy getting sniffed. Which, unsurprisingly, made her blush deepen. I hadn't even thought that was possible at this point. Soon she remembered her wound (after trying to figure out why her companion was paying such close attention to her) and looked down at the bandage. It had been applied rather quickly. Part of it was coming off already, along with a bit of blood having soaked through it. Luckily it didn't hurt much. Mostly a dull throbbing. Nothing Svarin couldn't handle. She'd had far worse during her time as a slave.

Katar smelled the blood. Her eyes grew wide. She hurried over to the cabinets that lined the wall. She dug through them until she found a medical kit. Bringing it over to Rin, she sat in front of her. She took a tube of healing salve and spread it across a bigger bandage. Carefully, Katar removed the old one, and put on the new one. She had to press it down slightly to get it to stick. As she did this, she flinched a little, as she feared that Rin would feel pain.

All the sudden movements were a bit surprising. Poor Rin sat there blushing 'n blinking while her friend-turned-nurse rushed about. Nearly talked again as well. But she had already spoken that evening, and doing so again would be rather odd for her. Just the thought of doing so gave her a headache. A rather short one, but one all the same. When Kat flinched she tensed, wondering if something was wrong. After a moment she realized that the pressure stung, and that was probably what the other girl had feared. Reaching out a hand she gave the lass a little pat on the head. Flashing a smile she nodded. "I'm okay," she signed, hoping the message got across somehow.

Katar smiled when Rin patted her head. Her feline instincts flared, and she purred a little bit. She put the medical kit back in the cabinet and sat back down. She just sat there for a while. Occasionally, she'd shift a bit to keep her limbs from aching, or to itch her head or her eyebrow. Her enhanced sense of hearing picked up the sound of tiny breaths coming from where the children slept. she could also hear Rin's heartbeat. It was slightly accelerated.

Did she just... purr? Guess Kat really is... well, a cat. It was amusing enough to make Rin chuckle again. After that silence took over again. Two near-mutes sitting together usually doesn't make much sound. Besides their breathing, of course. Soon the Echani girl found herself getting sleepy. So much had happened in the past few days. She needed her sleep. Slowly her eyelids started to feel heavy, and she felt herself falling asleep. What she didn't notice was the fact that in her slumber she had started leaning gently on Katar.
This was about to get interesting.

Katar's eyes widened a bit as she felt Rin's weight leaning against her. She looked over to see that the girl had fallen asleep. It was Kat's turn to blush. Hm. What should she do? She could carry Rin to bed. But that would wake her up. She could leave Rin in the nest and find another place to sleep. But that would be rude. Finally, Katar slightly adjusted the girl so that she was propped against the wall. She curled up into a comfortable ball and rested her head on Rin's legs. Within a few moments, she was asleep, too.

Now that was adorable. Had anyone been there to witness the scene, they probably would have cooed at the sight. Maybe even add another pairing to their list of ships. Of course, pretty much everyone else was off sleeping. Which meant that not much else really happened over the next few hours. Rin was used to sleeping in small spaces, so she managed to barely move at all during her rest. When she awoke she was nearly in the same position she had fallen asleep in. Again she blushed. Though, to her relief, it wasn't as much as she had before. Since she didn't know how much time had passed she tried to stay still. Katar needed her own sleep after all. While she sat, Svarin took a moment to look her friend over. Girl really was like a cat in more ways than one. Made her cute. Then again, our Echani pal here has a habit of finding many, many girls cute. Though she doesn't usually do anything about it.

Katar slept soundly for most of the night. Toward the morning hours, however, she slipped into a dream. She was in a cage again. Ugly faces pressed into the bars, sneering at her and spitting on her. Her father's face was amongst them. In real time, a small growl could be heard escaping Kat's lips, and she tensed slightly. In her dream, she launched herself at her father in blind furry, trying to claw out his eyes. but she couldn't reach him. he didn't even flinch. He continued sneering at her. In her head, she could hear his words. "It should've been you, not her. You are nothing but a pathetic waste of life." Katar's hands clenched, as did her jaw.

Something was wrong. Every muscle in Rin's body tensed as she started to mentally panic. What was happening? Was Katar having a nightmare, or did she sense someone coming? Either was just as worrisome as the other. Quietly she reached a hand out, gently stroking her new friend's cheek. Would that be enough?... Frowning she continued the action. Then she slowly ran her other hand through the girl's hair in what would hopefully be a soothing motion. Should this continue... she'd have to wake the girl.

Suddenly, the nightmare vanished. Katar felt calm. She didn't quite realize why until she felt Rin's had gently petting her. She began purring then, snuggling closer to the girl. It wasn't really Kat's doing; her instincts really came out when someone petted her. Rin was so nice! Pretty pink hair, didn't talk very much, and knew how to make Katar feel safe. Three things that made her Kat's new best friend. These thought's brought a small grin to her face.

Things were okay. They were going to be okay. With a little smile Rin kept petting the other girl (having adjusted to the idea of doing so). Their breathing patterns were almost matching now. Everything about it felt good. Natural. But she still had to make sure Katar was okay. "...Everything alright?" Speaking more than once in 24 hours? Well then. That hasn't happened in quite a few years. Not since the lass was still a slave.

Katar opened her eyes and nodded slowly, turning her head so that she could see Rin's face. Everything was okay now. She reached up and brushed part of Rin's bangs from her face. Her hair was soft. It made Kat smile a bit.

She was okay. They were safe, things were good again. A dorky grin spread across Rin's face as she looked at her new (and nice) friend. Blushed a bit as the bangs were brushed away. But they had been 'blocking' her 'view'. So she appreciated the assistance. Or at least that was her excuse. Not that it really matted why she was happy. She just was. And she hoped that Katar was as well. It would make the moment even sweeter.

Katar heard some of the kids beginning to stir in the other room. Sighing, Katar sat up and motioned Rin to follow her. She went to the cabinets once more and began digging for food. She managed to find packages of dried fruits. They'd have to do. She handed some of the packages to Rin and pointed toward the room where the children were.

It wasn't long before their little moment was over. Some of the kids were waking up, and they'd certainly be hungry. Apparently Kat realized that. Well, it was time to get up. Standing Rin moved over to accept the dried nuts before heading to the other room. There she started handing some out. When she got to the woosh woosh kid there was a bit of an issue. Said kid did not want to eat dried fruit. "Don't you have cookies?..." She asked, frowning. In response Rin opened a pack and ate a piece, smiling while she did. Even put a thumb up in approval. That was enough to get the child to try one. Turned out she liked it. However... she did say something as she skipped away. "You're still to quiet though!"

Many of the kids were a bit reluctant to accept any food from Katar. They shrank back from her, fear apparent in their eyes. What they'd seen of her yesterday still had them shaken up. Sighing, she placed the little baggies at their feet. They were cautious to pick it up in her presence, but thankfully, they ate it. Finally, all of the kids had food. Kat made her way back to Rin with a single baggie to spare. She held it out to the girl with a friendly smile.

Some of the kids were nervous around Rin as well. While most of the fighting she had done had been invisible to them (force + pebbles), her silence could be... unnerving to some. But they seemed to appreciate the food anyway. By the time all the kids had a pack of fruit, she had none left. Going without eating was fine with her-... Katar brought a single bag over with a smile. At first the Echani was hesitant. In the end she knew she'd share anyway. So returning the smile she happily accepted it, opened the container, and held out a piece for Kat. No way she was going to let her new friend go without eating.

Katar's smile widened, showing her sharpened teeth. She graciously took the piece of fruit fro Rin's hand and began to nibble on it. Truth be told, hunger was never really an issue with her. She could survive in the wild on nothing but roots and greens. But her new friend was offering to share with her, and that was something she couldn't refuse.
