The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Life Day.

It is known to most as a special day to gather around the hearth with family. It is a time for exchanging thoughtful gifts and warm sentiments. Homes were decked out in festive greenery, colorful lights, and cheerful garlands. There were smiles all around and happy people enjoying the glad tidings of the season. And this year, there was even a delightful blanket of snow on the ground. Indeed, it was supposed to be a very happy occasion.

But for Sunny Lee, it was just another day.

The Lee house had not been decorated with any lights or shiny garlands, but looked fairly unadorned, as it always did. Their home was clean-cut, minimal and modern in design aesthetic, and even a bit… cold. Instead of a gaudy Life Day Tree, Sunny had allowed for a small, branchy shrub to sit upon their coffee table. It didn’t exactly speak to the occasion, but she supposed that it was better than nothing at all.

The dark haired woman stood in the kitchen, wrapped in a warm robe. There were slippers on her feet, and a hot cup of green tea held between both of her hands. She brought the mug to her lips for a small sip and wandered into the living room, savoring her last minutes of morning solitude. It wouldn’t be long before her husband and teenage daughter would wake and come to join her. Blankly, her eyes gazed out the tall windows, and her face fell into an equally blank expression.

It wasn’t that she did not love her family – she did, very much so. Everything she did was for them; they were the reason she worked so hard. However, she often found her relationship with her husband to be strained and lacking the normal affection of a healthy marriage. And she could hardly relate to her daughter – there were days when the two of them hardly spoke at all. Sunny attempted to rationalize her feelings of guilt, and often told herself that her daughter was merely spreading her wings and becoming independent. It was a good thing.

With a gentle sigh, Sunny let her shoulders drop slightly. Another year come and gone, and another on the way in.

It was time to set out her meticulously wrapped gifts, throw on a smile, and try her best to enjoy the day.
