The Long Sleep

Alpha-16 "Aay'han"
Location: Beneath Jabiim
Objective: Wake up

He could still hear the rain.

Aay'han's mind was occupied by memories of his former life, of the one he was convinced he would get another chance at. It was only flashes, but he saw them all. His squad - his brothers. The people he cared about, most in the whole galaxy. The people that he'd been separated from, who had been spread out amongst the Republic centuries ago. He could see not just Jabiim, but home. He saw Kamino, the battles that they'd fought from there to the Inner rim. Almost all of Aay'han's good memories were of war. All his memories really were.

As much as he fought to end a war, he would always need one - that was his purpose, and he was fighting one in his own head, fighting to stay alive. His stasis was slowly failing, and he had no way to manually release it from inside the box he'd been locked in almost a milennia ago. This woud be an unfitting death for one like him, even if he didn't know it was coming. To simply waste away in a box, buried on a world of rain and mud. Aay'han had thought that, long before this frozen prison.

His emergency transponder and message, installed into a terminal nearby, began calling out, sending coordinates. It first sought for those who had Galactic Republic transponder codes and frequencies, those who may have fought in the Clone Wars. Beyond that, it would start bein a bit more public. Along with the coordinates, the message could only send a single word alongside it. 'CLAWBIRD'.

Objective: Find Something
The rain stopped pounding long ago.

The memories didn't, though. They kept pounding on his mind, a throbbing headache that never seemed to end. At times they hid away in the darker recesses of his mind, and at other times they took the helm. Soon, if he didn't sort this out, they'd be running rampant across his mind, driving him insane. So, it was closure then. Where else to start with the fearless leader of Clawbird himself.

Aay'han wasn't a man Doubles Koda often saw eye to eye with, and in fact he despised him at one point or another. For childish reasons, mind you. Then again, they practically were children though weren't they? They had no life experience, they didn't know anything beyond the storms of Kamino and those pristine white halls. They ended up spilling their blood on the sand of a far away place for a cause they were designed to fight for. Maybe that's where Fett disagreed, and maybe they all did but much like himself never voiced it. Even for an outspoken Clone, he was reserved.

Now? He traced some blip that read Clawbird. Anxiety rushed through his veins, and for the first time in a very long time had he spoke that word out loud. Oh how he hated it. Maybe he could figure out what happened to Aay'han, and with that close this god-forsaken chapter of his life. It went on for too long, and if it won't leave him he'll tear it away.

His booted feet collided with the metallic flooring of the underground structure, and with each passing moment he grew more and more weary. In time, he approached that terminal. Maybe it gave him some answers. The sooner he left his brain-staining mud-hole the better. Suppose he hated Jabiim more than Aay'han.

Objective: Wake up
As Koda approached the terminal, it registered him as much as he did it. The scanner confirmed positive for an organic presense, and so it started up a holoprojector. A full-size recording of the man himself, wearing the armour that had carried him through to the end of the clone wars stood there, his hands held properly behind his back. "This is a pre-recorded message, for...anyone who finds me. I've encoded this so it responds to old Republic signatures, not Imperial ones. With luck, one of my brothers will find me. If they're still alive. If Clawbird could still hear this, any of them, pass this message on."

The hologram adjusted his stance, as though having to think about what to say here. He cleared his throat, standing up a bit more straight. "To all of you, I'm...I'm sorry. That I wasn't a better leader, or a better brother to you. I loved you. I still do. You're my family, and I know you felt our losses as much as I did. Of Doubles, of Udesiir. If this message didn't reach you in time, then that's another failure on my part. To whoever has found this, I'm hopefully still sleeping in that coffin over there. Held in stasis until the Emperor 'could make use of me'. For the Republic."

With that, the hologram gave a salute, the kind typically seen during the Clone Wars as it then began to fade away, the terminal ending the message that it had been waiting eight centuries to send. The coffin remained in place, humming with power and glowing a faint, icy blue. It didn't give away what resided within, but all the information one could need had already been given. It was just the choice of what to do with it.

Objective: Make a Hard Decision
Beneath the battered, bruised, scratched, and scorched Mandalorian Helmet of Koda Fett, he couldn't up but scowl. It seemed to be his typical expression, and maybe it came from an ego too high, or a humbling hatred. This time? It was of indecision. He didn't know how to feel. He knew damn well that Aay'han didn't care for them, he only cared for Udesiir. And when that Trooper bit the dust? Say it was all down hill from there. A noticeable decline, a detachment from the rest- figured it may just be an Alpha thing, but here and now? Fett was the Alpha, and Aay'han may very well be the Omega. Irrational as always.

His T-Shaped Visor rapidly pivoted to face the 'coffin' as it was mentioned by the man, and his footsteps began to echo in the chamber as he walked towards it and away from the terminal, allowing it to continue playing as he kept on listening. Just as he reached the end, his right hand was raised upwards, palm down on the glass in an attempt to wipe away anything that might obscure his vision- but it may just be on the inside.

The same hand that wiped across the glass now hovered over a red, glowing button. Fett's hand began to shake, to tremble. In fear? No, it couldn't be. Nothing scared Koda Fett, not anymore. Once again, in indecision. Do you let a sleeping man lie, or do you wake him up. Would it ease his mind, or tear him apart.

He pressed the button. Time to wake up.

Objective: Wake up
Release.

Aay'han, albeit subconsciously could feel his body beginning to warm, beginning to wake. He couldn't really understand what was happening, only that the dreams were fading. Getting farther, and farther away. Sinking away into the recesses of his mind, and into the past. He couldn't really get what was going on or where he was, just that he was. That he was alive, that he had always been alive. It was difficult for him to understand that he'd been asleep or even awake before it, his mind still not fully thawed out as he began to really wake.

Eventually, the clone's eyes opened, groaning in confusion and in slight pain from the jarring stiffness of his joints, still having to defrost somewhat. He was tilted backwards, his body facing mainly towards the ceiling, as at first that was the only thing he saw. His eyes closed and opened again as they rolled around where he was, unsure of his general surroundings. His instincts hadn't kicked in, and he wasn't dead, so...wasn't brought back by an enemy of some kind.

He slowly began to prop himself up, finally looking at the one who freed him. A Mandalorian. That..wasn't who he had been hoping for, or realistically expecting. Aay'han's armour was thankfully light as he pried himself free of the coffin, pulling himself out of it, even if he was wobbly on his feet. He looked to the mysterious, armoured figure, giving a curt nod. "Thank you, I- what year is it? Who are you?" He was disappointed. He had hoped it would be one of the others. Perhaps they'd lost too much already to take this risk.

Objective: Remain Dead
Regret. Instant regret. He couldn't just let him lay there, could he? Maybe it'd shut down eventually and he'd rise on his own, become accustomed to a Galaxy he knew nothing of just as Fett did not too long ago. It was hardly fair, but what was in this reality? Or, maybe it would just kill him when it shut down. Could he live with that? So many lives had been taken by the Mandalorian but the thought of one more, one that meant something to him, he couldn't fathom it. It hurt more than noting the gradual decline of his marriage, it hurt more than watching Udesiir's blood stain the sand and the deathly screams that followed, not even those would rock his core as much as leaving Aay'han for dead would. So, in a way, he knew what he had to do.

Fett stepped away from the chamber as the Clone began to rise from his position within it, leaving him with enough room to stand comfortably. The first question he asked was easy, and was met with an easier reply, "Eight-Hundred years since you went under." The second one? Not so much. Does he say who he really is, or does he keep up this lie- or is this 'lie' who he really is? Fett struggled with that question, but he answered with what he could muster, "Koda Fett." That's who he was now, and maybe that's who he has always been.

Objective: Figure things out
Aay'han stared at the Mandalorian, utter bewilderment hidden behind his helmet. He couldn't fathom the first answer. The second one simply sailed over his head as he tried to process what he'd been told. He paused for a moment, trying to determine if that was some kind of joke. "What-" He went to the terminal in a rush, checking on the stasis recordings, how long he'd been under for. Exact figures popped up on the screen, and Aay'han felt like his world was closing in around him, like he'd just been shot in the abdomen.

"They're all dead." It was all he could muster, the realization that he'd lost everyone. Every single one of those men, his brothers, his family - his responsibility. He was their leader, he was supposed to make sure that they were fine, they were safe. Instead, he'd been sleeping on the job for over eight hundred years. The ARC tried to say something, but all he could do was yell out in rage as he threw his fist into the terminal screen, smashing a hole into it. He rarely lost composure - only when he'd lost two of his brothers in death had it happened before, but this was even worse.

Aay'han tore off his helmet, tossing it in fury into the nearby wall. The helmet was undamaged, but rolled across the floor and over towards Koda's feet as the clone just tried to get over this information, but he couldn't. His brain wasn't properly accepting it all yet. "I failed them." He paused, waiting as he realized what else he had to consider. His rescuer, if he could be called that - his accent and voice were familiar. A clone. There was a familiarity to it, though - one he could not place as he turned around, staring at the Mandalorian.

"Why did you release me?"

His eyes trailed the helmet as it rolled in his direction, allowing it to softly roll up his boot and then back down it again. His gaze was glued upon it as the visor stared into his own. That was Aay'han's face. Not what was beneath it, it was those tiny details of a set of armour that differentiated each Clone. As he did that, he remembered his own. Oh so very blue. That worm that devoured Udesiir marked from the forehead to the base of it. Everyone had their own way of remembering someone, and maybe with that design he could carry Udesiir with him no matter where he went. Just wasn't the case. Udesiir was buried on Tatooine, at least half of him was. Fett couldn't even remember if his legs were pulled out of that things gizzard. That moment happened all too fast to make any sense of it.

Didn't think that far ahead now did he?

Fett reached down to grab at the lip of the helmet on the floor, picking it up and inspecting it further. "Closure." So vague. It was bound to leave someone with more questions than answers, but he couldn't bring this old life back. He wasn't some Clone anymore, he was the Bounty Hunter. Gone were the days of empty servitude, and here lay the times of purpose. "You've got somewhere to be." He outstretched his hand, offering the helmet. When taken, if taken, he began to leave. There was always something to show.

Closure. That was something he'd like to have. As it was, he was just standing here now with nothing. No brothers, no purpose, nowhere to go. Had he done his duty? Of course he had, but the family he'd made had always been the higher priority for him. Had the Empire ordered them to harm a hair on their heads, he would have rather assassinated the Emperor himself. Now, he stood here, protecting nothing. In a way, he felt that he was nothing without them. Eight hundred years. What was the galaxy even like? Was there even still an Empire?

Did it even matter anymore? Maybe there was a Republic still running around, or a Confederacy, or some kind of union of states, any of that. What was the point? He had no reason to serve them, to follow them. Mandalorians were apparently still kicking, or there was at least one left. That was something vaguely familiar, at the least. They had some semblance of honour, at least personal honour, and were more than capable warriors, so it was a similar environment. Perhaps they-

Aay'han realized that Fett was holding out his helmet to him, and he took it quickly from his hands. Lifting the visage, he popped it back over his head and sealed it to make sure it stayed there, following after the armoured stranger and raising an eyebrow from beneath his visor. "Where is that, exactly?" Not that he minded to be given something to go on - a reason to go anywhere would be good. His independence and freedom were great boons to him, but for so long he had served a purpose. Now, without one...it was just difficult to get used to the idea.

"Hmph." Fett instinctively grunted, unsure of what his next answer was going to be. He wasn't a bad liar, but thrown on the spot made him a little anxious when dealing with such a delicate situation, especially when it was for himself. "My ship." That much was true, and he had something for him there. Something to get better acquainted with the times. You see, as man out of time himself, he had compiled a fact sheet of sorts that noted the significant changes in the Galaxy. Specifically the changes that occurred in his absence form it. Unfortunately, the Mandalorian didn't think too long, or too hard about how a perceptive individual may take in that information.

He sounds like a Clone? He's out of time himself? He was the one to release Aay'han from his constraints? Couldn't be by chance.

He emerged to the rain, it pittered and pattered off of his metallic armour as he stared out the war-torn landscape. Even still, not much had changed. Jabiim never truly recovered, not in the twenty years after the difficult battle when the Empire arrived, and not in the eight hundred years after their demise. However, the droid corpses and human carcasses had become lost to the environment, and where their bodies failed to withstand the test of time their plastoid had. Despite this, a gunship protruded ever so slightly, as did a Juggernaut- but showed a little more 'flesh' if you get the meaning.

If there was nothing left, they'd soon arrive on his ship. It wasn't very far away, and in fact in eye sight.

Alpha-16 "Aay'han"

Objective: Figure things out
Aay'han knew what dodging questions sounded like.

He didn't know this man's reasons, anything about him. He had figured out he was a Fett clone, but - eight hundred years in the future? Were they still being grown? That didn't seem likely, the Republic was bleeding credits just feeding them during the war, nevermind continuing on into peacetime. No doubt the Empire would have other things to focus on, and may have even left them behind to save money on the military. A waste of time. If you want the best, you need to get the best, especially when you already had them.

As they stepped out into the mud, Aay'han looked around, observing the mess of a world that centuries ago, had echoed with the sounds of battle, been decorated with the blood, sweat and tears of those he considered brothers. They were just voices on the wind now. Nothing. It was almost all gone, a deteriorating mess on a mudball in space. The captain stopped, looking around at the mess. Ruined vehicles with carcasses laid bare, all sitting there in their graves, so long after their usage had expired.

He could relate to that. He stood there, the kama blowing in the slight breeze as droplets of rain ran down his visor, pattering on the top of his helmet and his shoulder pauldron. What a waste. Of good genes, of lives. Whether Clone, Jedi, any of that. Force users were some of the few beings beyond clones he could truly respect; they showed tenacity and fierceness just like them, and whether they were chosen by a high power or not, they almost always proved worthy of its call. They said a whole group of Padawans had banded together, fought as a team, and destroyed the Seperatist leader on this world. Clawbird had tried to force them from the muck.

Finally, the clone noticed the ship that they were heading to. It looked like Jango's. Certainly not a coincidence. A clone of the old bounty hunter himself, running around in Mandalorian armour didn't just happen to pick the same model of ship, updated or not, by happenstance. Perhaps it was an identity for him, something that called to him. Perhaps he didn't understand it, himself.

As the Mandalorian moved throughout the mud, finding his footing caught in it one too many times, curiosity is the only thing that ran rampant. It was natural, of course, he couldn't help it. He had to ask, and maybe the question he had bottled up was going to alleviate some extra stress. "You mentioned 'them'. What was the last you heard of them?" It wasn't exactly all that subtle, but what did Aay'han expect in this moment? Surely nobody from Clawbird was alive eight-hundred years onwards. Consider it the curiosity of a stranger.

His head rolled over his shoulder, catching a glance of the Clone behind him. His own kama, worn down to the point of it being frail, flapped in the wind on his shoulder. Seeming as if it were a dirtied rag, but resembling a side-cloak more or less.

The Force Users? That's where the two differed extremely. Whilst Aay'han may have valued their tenacity, Koda saw them in a different light. The Kaminoans were Slavers, the Republic were Buyers, and the Jedi were Fools. Responsible for too much death with their limited experience and training, their code preventing them from achieving an undeniable victory. For ruining his life. You could argue it was the Sith that did that, but perhaps it was easier to feed off of your current hatred than add something new to the boiling waters.

It mattered not.

Fett arrived at the Spear II, moving up the ramp of the ship and inside. Sheltered from the rain and sights of a battle long since over. His hand lazily washed over a surface, snatching at a data pad that he had somewhat prepared already. Suppose he had more unrealistic expectations of someone still being alive, but he was here, no? Fett's figure turned to face Aay'han, and once more he offered something; a data pad that would bring him up to speed. It was a long read, but it'd been a long time.

"Read."

The less he spoke the better. Each Clone had differences in their voices, albeit it very small ones. Maybe only a Clone could decipher them. Just as Koda knew Aay'han's, it was likely to work the other way around.

Alpha-16 "Aay'han"

Objective: Figure things out
There was a thunderstorm moving in. Aay'han looked up, the smatterings of rain on his visor washing off to the sides as he watched dark clouds begin to roll in, unfurling themselves in the skies overhead. The white and red plastoid stood out in sharp contrast to the brown, black and grey of the unforgiving and unfitting graveyard. He looked down at the sludge that had gathered on this planet's surface. How many lives were piled down under it? How many clones, that nobody would remember? Soldiers were meant to get funerals for their families, carry on the memories of them for generations to remember.

Nobody remembered these clones. There were no whispered names on the horizon. Not even numbers in a register, anymore. All they were, all they used to be - it had been swallowed up by the war that wasn't their's, that they didn't understand. That they had fought in without a second thought. "My team. Clawbird, we were called. We'd been split off, sent to different divisions of the military. Everyone was fine for a while. We had lost one of our number, Udesiir, earlier in the war. That had time to heal, but...not long before I was put in stasis, we-" Aay'han glanced down, his lower legs and boots being now slightly stained with mud, across the stark white plastoid, the wind picking up as the storm approached. His kama billowed with higher intensity, like the rising feeling in his guts.

"We lost another. I think it was some kind of explosion, on Coruscant. They wouldn't tell me much. His name was Doubles, and I didn't believe them. He couldn't have been dead. Something like that wouldn't have killed him, he was better than that. I think I was just...I was afraid that it might be true. Doesn't matter now." Usually, these things were kept inward. Locked away. Why bother now? There was no enemy to hide intelligence from. No subordinates or superiors to upset with your emotions. There was only memories, and a coming storm.

Eventually, the clone began to follow Koda, moving into his ship with him, the noise of the rain's battering slightly muffled, even if it was still able to heard strongly through the open ramp. The metallic noise of his boots against the floor reminded him of the old days. Of the Venators, of ship bridges. He could even smell the crispness you used to be able to detect off a fleet officer's uniform. It was familiarity, and it felt warm, even if there was cold outside.

He was anxious to read. He wanted to see. Aay'han pored over the datapad that Koda had handed him, taking a seat where he could to try and focus more on it. In a way, it was all too much, but he had to keep going. His body refused to put it away, to deny the truth of what was happening. So, it was true. Things never really changed. The war hadn't done anything - it was all the same. Aay'han knew that it wasn't normal for this clone trooper, who happened to find him, to have a list of new events like that. He knew he was in a similar situation, but he didn't ask. He had a new name now, clearly a new home. It wouldn't be right to drudge up the dead. He handed back the datapad.

"There's nothing here for me."

You and me both.

The Mandalorian paused, almost as if he was stuck in animation. Both his arms had reached up to the railings, his palms grasping them firmly as one leg placed itself upon the step, his head rolled over his shoulder. A blank stare, both on the outside and in. He didn't know what to think. Hearing the recount of your own supposed death was strange, especially when told with such emotion. Yet, there was the dilemma. A moral question he had to truly think of, unlike any other. Do I stay dead? Do I keep Aay'han from the pain and suffering, allow him to grieve and start life anew? Or, was it better to let the villainous truth be known. It was a grey area, one that Fett failed to understand in the current setting.

"Shame."

That was all he could muster, snapping back into his own reality. Ascending the stairs with a loud step that filled the starship. He reached what appeared to be the cockpit, and he allowed that door behind him to close, even seal shut. He needed time to think, but in the meantime? They had places to go. The ramp began to rise, and the engines began to roar. The thrusters thrummed and Spear II left Jabiim, and it was never coming back.

He already knew that, whoever Koda was, or had been, he was a different man now. It was obvious in the way he carried himself, the way he spoke. He was a Bounty Hunter, most likely. If he was following this much in Jango's footsteps, that seemed the obvious choice. Still, there was nothing saying he had to be just like their template - he could be, and no doubt was, his own man. Maybe he made some homages or took inspiration here and there, but it was all the same.

Aay'han decided to leave him to his piloting; at the next planet, he could make some credits, get himself a shuttle into the core worlds. If they were in....well, in a bad situation, a man with his skills could make more there. From that point, he could get himself a ship, continue his work on a larger scale and then find other places to go. Maybe finally decide on a planet to settle down on. Maybe in the rain. Just no mud, if he could help it.

Standing up, the Clone Captain took time to explore the Spear II. It was a serviceable enough ship, seemed like it was definitely used as a pursuit vessel and for hunting down other craft. Part of him wanted to learn more about Koda; but there was no point sticking his nose where it didn't belong. If he was around, other clones were as well. Perhaps he could...blend in, in some way. Good luck with that. He hadn't managed to do it when he was in a military full of them.

What hope was there now?

Koda Fett
Location: Spear II
Objective: Live
For a man so successful in his trade, he sure was a failure.

It started at birth, or creation. The terms were interchangeable, but it always depends on who you ask- but who really asked? All Clones, as it was claimed, were to grow up loyal to the Republic or they didn't grow up at all. That wasn't the case with ARC-4422, however. He grew up resenting the Republic, it's institution, and it's treatment of Clones. The Commando viewed himself as nothing more than a slave soldier, bound to a cause he didn't believe in. It was his loyalty to his brothers that kept him there. Leaving them was to be a coward, and that Clone was too full of pride to make a fool of himself in that regard.

DEFECTIVE

The Jedi took control of these armies. Wielding the rank of General as well as their Lightsabers. The Clones? Their Commanders, Captains, Lieutenants, and Sergeants all had to heed their inexperienced and untrained words, marching blindly into death 'for the Republic!' or so it was exclaimed by those that were more akin to mindless drones. 4422 was convinced the Jedi were responsible for more deaths than the Droids, and so his hatred for them was justified (or so he thought). He disobeyed orders, and they best consider themselves lucky that the ARC wasn't there for Order 66. He'd of enjoyed gunning them down in the street, or on a battlefield. No matter where.

DEFECTIVE

Protocol: The official procedure or system of rules governing affairs of state or diplomatic occasions. It's definition was different in the military context, but the core values remained the same, however. It was an issue for the Clone. ARC-4422 broke it without as much as a second thought on a regular basis. Perhaps he had a mind of his own, and that led him to disagreeing with such a thing. His biggest offence? Love. He loved Evonne Harper, and she loved him. Clones didn't feel love, that was what protocol dictated. Perhaps his biggest defect was being human. It wasn't as if that mattered much anymore though, did it? Reality drummed out that feeling. Seemed that was a curse with the Fett gene, or at the very least with those that made it out on their own. Jango? Family slaughtered, second family slaughtered, companion murdered. Boba? Father killed before him, forced to leave his wife and daughter. Koda? Born a slave, family ripped from him, a failed marriage, torn apart from everything he ever knew.

DEFECTIVE

Clones were Clones. An army of one man, but the right man for the job. They found solace in their job, in their duty and themselves. ARC-4422 desired a life of his own, and whether that was the twisting of his lover's ambitions, or the need to be an individual was anyone's guess. The fatal Order was thrust upon the Galaxy, and the Jedi were slaughtered in droves. 4422? Order 88, destroy the SBI and it's members. What did he do? He warned his lover, allowing her to escape. Then he carried out his mission before turning on his own, detonating the nuclear reactor, killing all those within the area as he escaped within a shuttle. Perhaps the only man to truly double-cross the Emperor. For that he may be labelled one thing:

DEFECTIVE

That was Fett. He wasn't a Clone, he was a Man. His own man. In a moment of recollection that realisation became apparent. ARC-4422? Doubles? That's not who he is, but who he was. It was time to stop running from ARC-4422, otherwise known as Doubles. It was time to kill Doubles instead. Koda Fett is who lives.

The Mandalorian pressed a singular button, and that button opened up a compartment within the area Aay'han was present in. If he dared to look towards it, he would notice the armour of an Advanced Recon Commando- one the the can recognise as Doubles', if he did remember, after all.
