Darth Malak constructed his Sith lightsaber some time after meeting the Sith Emperor. During the Jedi Civil War, he would use it against the Jedi he once fought alongside. Eventually, he would duel both his former Master Revan and Bastila Shan aboard the Leviathan. He would once again use the weapon for the final time on the Star Forge during the Battle of Rakata Prime where he was slain by Revan.
A couple of thousand years later, Ar'ekk Daesharacor came to own the legendary vessel The Ebon Hawk that once belonged to Revan and the Exile. Knowing that he was in possession of a piece of history, trying to preserve relics belonging to the Old Republic became the first task at hand and that's why he decided to retrieve Darth Malak's lightsaber lost during the Battle of Rakata Prime when the Sith Lord was slained aboard the Leviathan.
Having found the map to the Star Forge hidden away in the cargo hold of the Ebon Hawk and tracing Revan's steps throughout the Galaxy after he left to venture into the Outer Rim Territories, Ar'ekk retraced the path he took to begin a frantic search of the ancient relic belonging to Malak.
Following his instinct, the Knight felt that the belongings of Darth Malak were recovered after he was slained aboard the Leviathan during the battle and were not lost in the massive explosion as it's commonly regarded. Making his way to The Foundry, Ar'ekk investigated and scavenged for the lost lightsaber aboard the abandoned space station to no avail. The only thing he found was complete nothingness.
But Tython... home to the ancient Jedi Order and where Revan went to explain his plans against the Emperor to the Jedi Council could be the key place to find this relic. He knew the first lightsaber of Malak was delivered to the Council in Dantooine and kept locked away but after the enclave's destruction, they should've taken it here or Revan brought it back to them in Tython.
By venturing inside the Jedi Temple of Tython, Ar'ekk came across a vault inside the Council Chambers that would lead him directly to a case holding the so precious weapon. Thousands of years had to pass before the Knight could retrieve, take care of and lock away aboard the Ebon Hawk (as it should be) the lightsaber that once belonged to the fallen Jedi and Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Malak.
