Designation: Sentient
Homeworld: Komodan - destroyed
Language: Hissy basic. Numerous common trade tongues of the galaxy. Their native cultural tongue is something of a dying language. Komodi often speak fluent but broken Basic and it is not unusual for them to refer to themselves in third person.
Average height of adults: Around 2 m.
Skin color:

  • Most Common: Grey, brown, green, black

  • Uncommon: red and blue

  • Rare: yellow/gold and white

Scaling of each individual will match the skin tone in varying darker or lighter shades. Markings such as stripes, spots, and blotches are common and typically inherited through bloodlines. Tattoos and scarification are common and may embellish markings that denote the family/caravan to which an individual belongs. Thorny scales commonly sprout from joint areas such as shoulders, elbows, knees, and sometimes even knuckles. Thorned scales are simply scales that grow pointed hooks. Thorned scales shed just like normal scales.

Hair color: Hair color will match skin tone, either darker or lighter and can vary from shades of the skin color to pure white or pure black. Dyed hair is not uncommon.

Breathes: Type 1
Strengths:

  • x2 Strength of humans

  • x2 Senses of humans (sensitivity of sight, smell, taste and hearing)

  • xAwesome; Fire and heat resistance. Bewm.

  • Bacteria-infested mouths make bites difficult to treat and highly susceptible to infection. Also sharp teeth. Lots of them.

  • Fire Breath. All Komodi are capable of producing one fire breath within a span of approximately 18 hours. To do this they expell a spray of flammable venom from twin glands within their throats, the flap of which is hardened cartilage that releases enough energy in the expulsion to create a spark and set them aflame. This fire breath is extremely volatile and the venom particularly sticking and viscous, making it difficult to wipe off. The range of this attack is approximately 10 meters. It takes approximately 18 hours for the venom glands to refill, more or less depending on size of the individual. Komodi are born with the venom sacks as a part of an inherent defense mechanism but they do not develop the cartiledge overlays until adulthood. Young Komodi are only capable of a Venom spray. Komodi are immune to their own kind's venom but not immune to a full-blown Fire Breath attack.

  • Clawed hands and feet. 4 digits each.

  • Stomachs of steel. (Not literally.) Their digestive tract is capable of handling your step-mother’s cooking with no ragrats.

  • Armor-like scaling and tough skin provides protection from basic bladed weapons as well as the stray blaster bolt. Repeated strikes to the same areas will eventually break through the scales.

  • Tails will grow back if broken or severed. Tails are prehensile and act like a third hand.

  • Komodi have a strong immunity against many common galactic sicknesses and (human) base diseases, however they are known carriers of said germs and viruses. Despite this immunity, their race is ravaged by their own native-borne diseases and illnesses.

Weaknesses:

  • Force Sensitivity - though historically Force Sensitive Komodi have been extremely rare and were touted as mystics, there have been NO RECORDED FORCE SENSITIVE KOMODI since the exodus of Komodan. It is believed their ability to manipulate the Force was tied to their spiritual connection to their home planet.

  • Cold blooded. They require outside sources of heat to stay warm. Growing too cold will make them lethargic, slow down their blood system, and send them into hibernation. Extreme cold will kill them. (No visits to Hoth. Sry.)

  • Incompatible with other races. Inbreeding for the win. This has lead to...

  • They’re diseased. Yeah, it says they can live to be like 300 years old but most of them will shrivel up and die from disease before they experience a mid-life crisis. Degenerative bone diseases; blood diseases that cause heart and organ failure; skin diseases that cause them to look like lepers; cancer is also common. Want to create one? Roll the dice. Did you get a number? Congrats, it’s diseased! Pick one from the following or make up one of your own:

Ingrown Horns - horns that grow inwards on the skull and very slowly kill the Komodo over time. Curable only by cutting horn.

  • Atypical Horns - Komodi affected by this disease will grow in multiple sets of horns that are non-symmetrical and uneven. New horn stems will appear every year for the duration of their life. Horn growth may even spread downwards into the eyes and ears, affecting sight and hearing, down along the neck, shoulders and arms affecting mobility. Komodi with atypical horns are twice as likely to suffer from ingrown horns. Incurable.

    1e32c13067ddec7165c802911eb83ad6.jpg

  • Scale Slag - Scales fail to harden and provide no protection to the Komodo leaving their skin highly sensitive to touch and sun exposure. Keeping warm is very difficult. Incurable.

  • Scale Rot - Scales slough off, leaving large patches of raw flesh. Treatable with bacta or kolto. Very painful. Very contagious. Curable, but similar to Chicken Pox in humans, the virus never truly leaves the system and can be reactivated by exposure to the live virus on another, over-stressing the body and immune system, and has also been seen to be reactivated by some common galactic medicines and vaccines. Advanced, untreated cases have even seen the horns affected by this disease in that they will fall off and leave festering, infected stubs behind.

  • Cirling’s Disease - An advanced form of arthritis that does not develop until a Komodo has reached full maturity. 1 in 50 Komodi will have this disease. Starting with the extremities the joints will begin to calcify and seize up. Fingers and toes will curl inwards and dexterity goes first, quickly. Mobility goes eventually. In the late stages a Komodo is rendered incapable of caring for itself and must rely on the care of its community. Final stages the Komodo is incapable of eating as even the jaw will seize. Mercy-killing those in final stages is frowned upon - most Komodi are too stubborn and would rather starve to death. Incurable.

  • Hollow Bone Disease - Caused by deficiency of minerals in their diet at a young age, Komodi suffering from this disease are far more fragile with weaker bone structure, making breaks and fractures far more likely to happen and harder to heal properly. Untreated broken bones will calcify and heal abnormally.

  • Bone Thorns - Common in those suffering from Hollow Bone Disease but can occur in any Komodi that suffers a broken bone. Bone Thorns are growths that result from poorly-treated broken bones and form during the healing process. They are quite painful to endure but treatable with surgery.

  • Clou Disease - Describes the loss of pigmentation in flesh, hair, horn and scales. Uncommon disease. Starts as a small splotch that spreads over time and can eventually cover the entire body. May cause blindness upon reaching the eyes. Incurable.

  • Frond's Syndrome - Some Komodi never fully develop their Venom Glands due to a breakdown in their DNA. This is a disease passed on through bloodlines and the occurrence and severity of it depends upon genetic factors. Some Komodi may simply be carriers of the faulty genome while others may be fully effected by it. There are 3 stages of severity. Stage 1: the Komodi never develops the cartilege covering of the Venom gland and therefore will never be able to attack with a fire breath. Venom spray works normally. Stage 2: Venom glands are underdeveloped and may only produce enough venom to fill the mouth to provide for a venomous bite instead of a projectile attack. Usually Komodi suffering Stage 2 Frond's Syndrome have little control of these glands and are known for constantly salivating due to the presence of venom in their mouths. Stage 3: Venom Glands fail to develop, or are so stunted as to be incapable of producing venom. Though all Komodi that suffer from Frond's Syndrome are referred to by other Komodi as Fronds, those with Stage 3 find particular ire to the name.

  • Many many more. Did you come up with a cool disease? PM us and we’ll add it in!

[*]
Horns are filled with nerves and are sensitive to touch. Overwhelmingly painful to cut/break. Will debilitate a Komodi if broken or fractured and bleed profusely if the break isn’t cauterized. Horns do not regrow if broken.

Though the intricacies vary wildly from tribe to tribe, the Komodi as a people are a fiercely spiritual folk. Despite the many advances made in technology and science, they maintain their -sometimes naive - worldview, and simplistic as it is, it brings happiness to a way of life that seemingly supports none.

Nomads, wanderers, and gypsies, the Komodi have no place to call home; they carve it out instead wherever they go. Coruscant one day, Mandalore the next, Felucia later still. They adapt to whatever life throws at them, which is most often the very worst of what it had to offer. in the face of adversity, the Komodi adhere to their time-honored traditions and persevere against all odds, exploring further the wide and unfathomable reaches of the Galaxy.

The most rigidly religious among them honor the spirits every day, whereas there are tribes that only perform the rituals a few times a month. Whichever the case, every Kimodo - unless a particularly acute illness gets them first - will experience a few landmarks in their journey to adulthood. These are known simply as the Rites of Passage, and they are curiously similar across all the tribes of Komodi, of which there are many. From surviving a night out in the cold to sacrificing scales to the spirits, the Rites mark the end of one’s childhood. It is not uncommon that some Komodi perish during the Rites, but the majority survive and emerge all the stronger for it, ready to accept the brand of their tribe in place of the sacrificed scales.

Technology level: Galactic standard.

General behavior: Their ability to flourish in just about any social setting is uncanny considering their appearance and overall philosophy on life. These guys don’t crave infamy or popularity - they’re just here to survive by whatever means necessary. They aren’t known for book-smarts and it’s likely that a very, very small percentage have even attended any sort of legitimate school simply for knowledge’s sake. Their intellect is in trade skills and spirituality. Their strength is in adaptability and survival. The moral compass they employ is entirely questionable.

History:

  • Komodi start out as various tribes on Komodan. Every region generates varying skin colors, markings, and physical traits. Each tribe has their own religion/totemic beliefs. Think animism and spirits of nature, etc.

  • Progress, development of basic technology, occasional wars.

  • Outsiders arrive on Komodan, attempting to make peaceful contact only to be rebuffed by aggressive attacks. Human settlers create encampments to study Komodi while searching for resources. Komodan is found to be ripe with raw materials required to make durasteel.

  • Scientists engage Komodi with trade of technology for peace. Some clans pacified - Elders make peaceful contact. A tenuous alliance is formed after a Commune between clan Elders. Many years go by with continued trade, peace and the education of the Komodi. Clan Leaders are taught to speak basic and offered education in exchange for physical labor and access to cavern systems where the humans mine for raw ore.

  • Major war breaks out after an Elder dies from an explosion of a malfunctioning ship. Human settlements overrun as Clans come together en masse. Full war breaks out, Komodi are not able to match the humans and their allies for firepower. Many Komodi enslaved, most Clans are pushed to the outskirts of their own homelands, specifically away from areas where ore can be mined. Humans devastate Komodan. Battles are common, Komodi grow a seething hatred for humankind.

  • Enslaved Komodi are bred and raised under the care of humans in mining colony ships orbiting Komodan. These Komodi, called "Uma'dan" by the natives, are trained and educated then sent planet-side to broker a new peace treaty. With Komodan slowly turning into uninhabitable wastes, many clans are forced into submission.
An Uma'dan Komodo named Fiorek Raue was infamous for his rare, high intelligence and speaking skills. He alone was responsible for the collection of more than 30 clans into the colonies. [Art by TheMinttu on tumbler.com]

  • A century of strip mining has left the planet in turmoil. Many clans suffer from low birth rates and high mortality as it becomes more and more difficult to live. After the mines have been depleted the majority of the human settlers leave. Colonists extend an invitation to the remaining clans and some leave willingly. Those left behind eventually scavenge enough tech to start venturing out into the Galaxy on their own.

  • "The Great Fire" - meteorite strikes Komodan, scorching the lands of all viable resources for the native people. Thousands die in the following months due to starvation and exposure. This event is viewed as punishment by the spirits for their failure to protect their lands.

  • Mass exodus of Komodan, they scatter to the winds in search of redemption, forming large colonies within the stars.

  • Their population decimated during Gulag due to innate deseasinness. Colonies devastated and broken apart by loss. Komodi form small vagrant caravans searching for others of their kind in order to prevent extinction. This creates their "gypsy-like" lifestyle out of necessity, becoming traders and scavengers in order to survive while they seek each other out. Many elders fall to the Gulag - the story of their people and culture begins to fade.

  • During Netherworld, the scattered Komodi aren’t much affected, seeing as they aren’t concentrated in any one place. They believe the Rapture to be a sign that the spirits are still unhappy. The majority of Komodi are only vaguely aware of the history of their people - most have completely forgotten the name of their original deity but feel compelled to carry on what traditions have been passed down to them. Rituals are performed despite not knowing the real meaning behind them.

  • Due to the degradation of their culture a gathering is called in the inner rim, a communion of what Komodi could be contacted. Approximately 12 thousand attend. A call goes out to scour the stars for the remaining scattered caravans and any Elders before their history is all but lost to time.

  • The last known living Elder, Ravegar Utek, dies at the age of 312. He manages to transcribe what stories of his people he can remember but his Scribe and the tome go missing shortly after his death.

Does this still apply if there are no known force sensitives of this species, since departing from their homeworld? Along with that, does the telepathy cross to other species or is it limited to komodi?

Otherwise, very good submission, except for one issue. The font changes a few times, here and there. No edits needed on that one, just thought you should know (in case you wanted to fix it).
