He nodded slowly. "Yeah. Parents who pretended I didn't exist unless I was wearing a collar and smiling at their political parties. You want to know what that was like? Sitting at a table full of off-world ambassadors while your own mother couldn't look you in the eye because you reminded her too much of the man she married for status."

He leaned forward, vibro-coin vanishing into his coat pocket.
"Alright. Fine. You want truth? I'll give you truth."
He pointed toward her drink, toward the shimmering city outside the glass.
"You climbed out of a gutter, Sommer. I jumped into one. You survived the streets. I ran away from expectations and crawled into spice dens and strip clubs because I wanted to forget I came from anything respectable."
His voice dropped, no bravado left. Just honesty.
"You blame me for being wild? Karking hell, so were you. I've read the reports. You were running spice out of a cargo freighter by sixteen. You were half-blind drunk when you nearly burned down that warehouse in the lower district, remember that?"
