Name: Ghi’eyq (Peripleen subspecies)

Designation: Sentient

Origins: Oshetti IV, Oshetti System, Aparo Sector, Outer Rim Territories

Average Lifespan: 400-500 Galactic Standard Years.

Estimated Population: Scattered

Description: Believed to be a subspecies that branched away from their mountain-dwelling kindred, the Ghi’eyq Peripleen evolved in the vast swamps of their homeworld, and their physiology proves it. Possessing smooth skin occasionally accentuated by hornlets atop the head, their moist skin is acclimated perfectly to their watery homes. The females possess mammeries and nurse their young despite laying round eggs in gel-like beds placed in specially made pools in their swamp or ocean-based huts. The males possess two hornlets on either side of their nostrils and are often vastly muscular compared to the females. Both sexes appear as stocky apes possessing the aforementioned smooth skin, as well as trunk-like legs that end in bizarrely-formed webbed feet. The species either lives in traditional mobile, water-based mobile huts and subsists on fish or mollusks. Non-traditionalists either adopt foreign technology and droids to live similar lifestyles as their traditional peers, albeit with less work, or else they flee from their water-based homes and travel the wider Galaxy. Many non-traditional offworlders work at spaceports or else become pilots for a chance to be anywhere but at the water’s edge, and for the opportunity to see everything else that is in the wider Galaxy.

PHYSICAL INFORMATION

Breathes: Type I

Average Height of Adults: 1.8-2.2 meters

Average Length of Adults: N/A

Skin color: Dark gray or medium-to-dark green. Rarely, an individual may be some shade of blue. The males’ skin may change to practically any hue during intense emotional displays.

Hair color: The rare few born with hair possess either red or blond hair. White hair is the rarest variant of all and is almost nonexistent.

Distinctions: The males of the species are usually stocky or rotund, while the females are either stocky or sport proportions that match standard female body types that are common throughout the known Galaxy. The females’ eyes are noticeably larger and change color to indicate mood, rather than their skin. The older members of the species have skin that is more susceptible to injury than their younger counterparts.

Races: The Ghi’eyq live traditionally alongside their more well-known cousins, the reptilian-derived Peripleen race, content to keep to themselves alongside the swamps, marshes, lakes and oceans of whatever planet they may find themselves living on. Hybridization between the two subspecies is rare, and children from such unions are considered cursed in traditional communities and are abandoned to die in the swamps unless raised by caring parents, only to be shunned in adulthood; even non-traditionalists frown upon such “bastard spawn” and avoid them.

Force Sensitivity: Standard

Strengths:

Natural Armor:
When attacked, the species’ outermost layer of skin cells can absorb an underlying layer of subdermal water (if one is adequately hydrated) to thicken the overlaying skin considerably so long as he or she is in a state of anxiety, terror or being fuelled by adrenaline. This involuntary reflex grants the species armor that can absorb or block many melee attacks, though the reflex only has a slight effect against a blaster shot or two.

Secondary Respiration: These Peripleen offshoots possess either twin slits on the sides of the neck or, in rarer cases, a single horizontal slit on the middle of the back of the neck; in either case, the slit(s) in question are secondary gills. While not necessary for breathing air (the species possesses lungs) this evolutionary trait has enabled the species to breathe underwater.

Weaknesses:

Hydration Apparatus:
The gills can become inflamed and infected with prolonged exposure to heat on arid worlds. For the sake of comfort and to prevent pain, eventual exhaustion and infection, Ghi’eyq travellers to arid planets such as Tatooine opt to wear special cylindrical filters of water over their gills to keep them moist and comfortable. Seawater is preferred (for its pleasant taste), though freshwater works, too.

Heat Damage: In addition to negative impacts upon their gills, exposure without an application of oil derived from certain forms of animal fat to shield the skin from heat and sunlight will eventually inflame a Ghi’eyq’s skin. Prolonged exposure will cause the most burned areas to split painfully.

Fire Vulnerability: Fire only dries away water that much more quickly. Fire has been an effective method of killing any Ghi’eyq, and the species has learned to fear and shun such a disgusting, dangerous “unnatural light” as they have come to call it!

CULTURE

Diet: Carnivore - fish, shellfish, crustaceans and insects are usually preferred, but they are known to enjoy red meat often, as well. The species has a strange tendency to become addicted to spicy foods, though scientists are not quite sure why this is the case. The spiced foods give them no ill effects, fortunately.

Communication: Halu is the written and spoken language of the Ghi’eyq; it is a rare language only known by those who directly deal with large clans of these almost-reclusive aquatic simians. Members of the species beyond Oshetti IV usually speak Basic with a distinct regional accent that doesn’t match the species homeworld. A rare few more dedicated individuals learn more than one language.

Technology level: Their technology level ranges from traditional copper-made tools and utensils to Galactic Standard levels, for those Ghi’eyq who either scavenge from other cultures or those who grow to despise their own culture of keeping to the waters, fishing and foraging; who end up leaving whatever water planet they grew up on behind, never to return.

Religion/Beliefs: Generally shamanistic or else Force-aligned for the Force Sensitives among them who encounter the greater Galaxy’s Force Users around them. There are also growing numbers of atheists among the most recent generation of youths, as well as sects of non-Force-Sensitives who worship the Light or Dark Sides of the Force directly in place of their traditional shamanistic water spirits, the Fissure Born. The traditional religion involves offering gifts of food, homemade trinkets, small portions of currency or imported foreign spices to the deepest body of water that one might encounter. Doing so appeases the Fissure Born - formless white spirits in the deepest bodies of water, who rise up from the depths to protect a chosen family from monsters that might be hunting in the water, as well as to provide the families under their individual care with successful undertakings, regardless of what those undertakings may be, so long as they are not violent towards another sentient.

General behavior: The Ghi’eyq are an entirely family-based culture, as what few groups of families that may form for the trading of resources or marriage-arranged spouses ALWAYS separate after a few months of congregating, at most. Each individual family travels the waterways or oceans of Oshetti IV in a robust home composed of thatched timber, water-resistent grasses, kiln-baked clay or, equally as often, (since the introduction of foreign technologies) modern building materials, as well as repurposed and scavenged parts. Since time immemorial, when their first ancestors evolved away from their Peripleen forebears, the Ghi’eyq have revered the waters that sustain life in nearly all of their doings, as these waters are the home to - in myth - the Fissure Born, spirits of formless light that provide protection in exchange for loyalty to their handed-down morals and ways of living, which include ethical treatment of all others and peaceful simple living on the waters of the world, and the primary focus upon one’s own immediate kin, and, later on, an arranged mate and children.

Indeed, this all-encompassing devotion to their religion, which is focused outwards on ethical actions only, family life, travel, reverence and offerings to the Fissure Born and seeking sustenance, all taught since birth to many of the race, is a reason for both their seclusion and the mainstream’s complete lack of interest in the affairs of the rest of the Galaxy. Because everyone is traveling and seeking sustenance, the majority of the species hasn’t had the time or localized presences necessary to build anything beyond a mere hunter-gather culture. Even the Ghi’eyq outside of Oshetti IV, even if they possess variants of the original myths, are often reluctant to deviate from a simple hunter-gatherer lifestyle augmented by occasional outside technological sources.

However, as has been the case with every species across the Galaxy, rebellious youths are sometimes the greatest way to diverge from any lifestyle that may have came beforehand. In the case of the Ghi’eyq, the results are EXTREME, and for reasons that are completely unknown to most xenobiologists or xenopsychologists. Approximately one-in-ten of the race run at the first sign of opportunity, sometimes with no provocation, and never look back, and this isn’t even counting those youths who are adopted or born into slavery, etc. These runaways or those who aren’t born into the ancestral culture are completely at ease in the wider Galactic culture, as taken to cosmopolitanism, learning and diverse experiences as any Coruscanti native would be! For whatever strange psychological reason, there are very, very few examples of behavior between these two extreme antitheses.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The history of the Ghi’eyq and their Preipleen cousins has usually been one of extreme resistance to outside influences, coupled by generational pendulum-swings that led to occasional bursts of rebelliousness that allowed the species to spread out over the greater Galaxy away from Oshetti IV as the Ghi’eyq and Peripleen youths rebelled, seeking the aid of either explorers, travelers or in some cases(what turned out to be) slavers in their desperate attempts to escape the mountains, valleys, swamps and coasts of their primitive world.

Some of the transported Ghi’eyq on other worlds would revive their old traditions once the outside Galaxy left them either unsatisfied or nostalgic, and from these new pockets of Ghi’eyq runaways sprouted new and occasionally divergent communities that revolved around their formerly-abandoned traditions: communitarianism, ancient customs that revolved around the appeasing of the Fissure Born - white, formless mythical spirits that would guard a family unit in exchange for sacrifices of handmade trinkets bearing the spirit’s name, food, spices or other small offerings - and constant traveling of their waterbound homes to spread the morals, teachings and truths of the Fissure Born to all they may encounter, land and water dweller alike.

Back on Oshetti IV, the discovery of both cavernous and deep-sea variants of several subspecies of bioluminescent bacteria resulted in the local Ghi’eyq population leaning to cultivate, grow, harvest and process a hemp derived from the bacteria themselves, which would produce an incredible, gorgeous array of any color one might want or imagine. This product eventually became known across the greater Galaxy as Iluminescence. Initial trading with non-native explorers were met with acclaim and excitement over these particular articles, and, with permission, the Ghi’eyq and their Peripleen cousins allowed and helped to oversee the building of an immense local spaceport over the following years. Naturally, this spaceport exports local fish, shellfish, crustaceans and the local hemp-derived fabrics invented by the Ghi’eyq; this has enriched the two local races and has afforded the less traditional families access to the greater Galactic Market, and now offworld technology is more present on Oshetti IV then it ever would have been otherwise. The spaceport, Oej-woin Station (“Prosperity Keeper” in Halu) has seen moderate growth over the centuries, and has recently expanded to include a small town of offworlders. While this expansion has mostly been tolerated, there are unconfirmed rumors of a planned attack on the township and spaceport by a combination of Peripleen and Ghi’eyq forces…
